This was um.... not good.

I really liked this as HHH using the same tactics Mick used to gain a match vs. Rock on 1/4/99. HHH does feel entitled and is the heel here but he also raises some valid points.

Don't like KISS but I guess this was produced ok. Still, wrestling and concerts can be a nice added thing to the show but certainly shouldn't be a main focus.

I guess Hogan and Sting took a backseat to KISS tonight per their contract. Match was another shockingly good match on this run of Hogan. I liked that they opened it up with a brawl and the finish was really heated with the missed leg drop and Stinger splash variations. The run ins of course happen and Hogan and Goldberg being pals never doesn't look odd but Hogan promises Sting he will give him another shot at the belt. **1/2

[1999-08-23-WCW-Nitro] Music Video: West Texas Rednecks
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
The video is fun and the verse is fine but the chorus is pretty bad on this song. Not as catch as Rap is Crap for sure.- 6 replies

Eric is driving the hummer!!! Sorry wrong angle. Eric as a heel sounds really fresh.

Sting, please stop talking. I couldnt make out the mangled talking going on in the background but it didn't give the show a very professional look. I have been enjoying WCW to a point these past few weeks but this was pretty brutal. Luger coming out is built as a surprise but so much happens over such a period of time on Nitro that you lose track of it all.

[1999-08-22-WWF-Summerslam] Steve Austin vs HHH vs Mankind
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
You can tell the crowd is shocked at the finish as it came off really anti-climatic. Foley pinning Austin is really perplexing. This whole thing is a giant mess and it seems they were booked into a corner at every turn. I almost think they should have just forgot about the Billy Gunn push and had Rock in the role of Foley here as at least Rock pinning Austin felt more genuine and we could have had the same storyline going forward.- 10 replies

[1999-08-22-WWF-Summerslam] Kane & X-Pac vs The Undertaker & Big Show
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
This did look good from clips and the storyline of Taker being unpleased with Show's contributions isn't an awful one. The belts are switching hands left and right in WWF land right now. -
I get what Loss was saying as coming out of this, the main takeaway was of Shane being so courageous. Still, for a gimmick match with a lot of bells and whistles, this was effective to me. The elbow through the table still looks great and dare i say seeing stephanie be an innocent babyface backstage feels endearing now watching it back. I don't think this is the classic match so people potray it as, but it was a ton of fun while it lasted. ***1/4

[1999-08-22-WWF-Summerslam] Road Dogg and Chris Jericho
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Dogg gets owned by Jericho on the mic here. This felt like another good feud they could have blown off on Raw before Jericho moved to bigger things. -
[1999-08-22-WWF-Summerslam] Jeff Jarrett vs D-Lo Brown
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
D-LO gets swerved by Mark Henry and Debra reunites with Jeff as he wins the European and IC belts. Debra's outfit was on point this night. -
Corino is still not looking strong at all. The finish here was fine with Francine coming in but overall I was disappointed in the way most of this was presented. Tajiri still has a cool vibe with the mist and that was the highlight with the crowd chanting for Taz. I wonder why they were so hasty with Tajiri vs. Taz at Heatwave as they seem to be setting it up as the big feud for the future.

Yep, the Dudley's are goners but they will not pass the torch to anyone. I guess this is ok in a sense that ECW has played off people leaving before but this is a heel side of things but when you are going to a new audience next week with the TNN stuff, this does seem like it could go over a lot of causal viewer's heads.

[1999-08-21-OVW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs Rip Rogers & Jason Lee
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Clever finish and while RNR still look effective with their timing, they do look dated here in this setting. Rips promo was grand as he really runs down the new age wrestling fan. -
[1999-08-21-OVW-TV] Flash Flanagan and Rico Constantino
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Pretty great turn for Flash as he beats up everyone with great effectiveness. cornette can still bump really well when he flies nearly out of the ring off of Flash's punch. -
Deuce and Domino rip offs is how I took this. Not bad for a lower card sleazy gimmick I suppose.

That FMW review made me sad. Sounded like a lot of old guys trying to recapture some nostalgia that has long since passed them by.

[1999-08-21-MPPW-TV] Interview: Doug Gilbert & Wolfie D
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Man both of these promos were awesome. Doug showing a magazine talking about the Gilbert family felt sincere and fired up. Power Pro continues to be the most pleasant surprise of 1999. -
[1999-08-21-MPPW-TV] Show recap / Jim Cornette celebration
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
A good opening angle with a somber Maclin and Brown. One of those little Memphis announcer things but Maclin telling the crowd to wait until Randy was loaded into the ambulance and Dave taking the ride to the hospital felt appropriate. -
[1999-08-20-FMW-Goodbye Hayabusa II] Masato Tanaka vs Mr Gannosuke
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
I can see Tim's points with the arm work and the no selliing of suplexes. However, I did think that Gannosuke isolated the arm enough that he was able to withstand more punishment from Tanaka than he usually would have. Fuyuki was a compelling referee and his involvement made the finishing stretch more dramatic. FMW was really firing at this time and had a bevy of roster members that are among my favorites worldwide. ****1/4 -
[1999-08-19-WCW-Thunder] Rey Misterio Jr vs Lenny Lane
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
This was nice to see Lenny win the belt but Rey feels lost without the mask and hot tag division now and Lenny and Lodi together has mainly been amusing skits up to this point. -
Occupational gimmicks worked so well in mid 90's WWF.
