Dutch can ramble with the best of them at times but this is something that entered my brain and then immediately left it.

Agree that HTM would be welcome here in this environment getting the younger talent over. Good stuff both with Marlin and now Jarrett. This was a significant step up to me from the Christopher vs. Jarrett clips we saw last week.

I feel lower than this than most as it was certainly a good match but a pretty blah one to me. Santo on the mat will almost always be good and his opening sequence here was just that, not next level to me. Ditto for Jerry bumping like a lunatic. This were actually relatively tame on the Jerry scale at times. Eddy still feels like he is learning his way a bit and there was some growing pains. Again, not critiquing the match but it felt like a basis level match which was fun to watch but nothing too memorable. (***)

[1993-01-16-WCW-Saturday Night] Ricky Steamboat vs Dustin Rhodes
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
This looked good from the clips we saw. Smart finish too with Barry actually helping Dustin win the US Title so he can go after it in the future. This creates a point of contention between Dustin and Steamboat too.- 11 replies

[1993-01-16-WCW-Saturday Night] Up Close w/ the Hollywood Blonds
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Up close continues to deliver the goods. This was great and really made the tag team titles feel hugely important. The White Castle of Fear skit is shitty but man their is a lot of interesting stuff going on in WCW right now and even something like Arn vs. Watts doesn't feel near as bad as it might should because it is about the 4-5 most important thing happening.- 9 replies

[1993-01-16-WCW-Saturday Night] Arn Anderson and Erik Watts
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Arn seems to be really trying and Erik hasn't offended me yet in what he has done. Him pulling out an STF in a parking lot is pretty awesome.- 13 replies

Not much to add except this is hilariously bad although I will admit to finding the synth music as catchy with Cheatum and the girls chanting Vader, Vader.

I have talked before that I really enjoy heel vs. heel feuds and this one has been done well in an unconventional manner. We get a decent pull apart here and I thought the violence matched the intensity at this point of time in the feud. I look forward to where this goes.

I liked Smothers coming out and immediately beating Killer Kyle and Cornette losing his shit. I had high hopes for Golden vs. Smothers but they really meandered around. They played up the story of Golden and DWB taking out Smothers. DWB lets Golden handle all the dirty work. Smothers takes care of Golden and now DWB has no one to hide behind with Ron Wright losing it at ringside. DWB is someone I go back and forth on as a worker and this was on the lesser side as he didn't add much intensity to me. SMothers wins to a big pop. Overall, I had high hopes for this given the time and what could have happened if all four competitors were on point but it was disappointing overall. (**1/4)

[1993-01-16-USWA-TV] Jeff Jarrett vs Brian Christopher
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Ugh, this felt like Memphis C-team stuff and Christopher is someone who still has rarely made it into the good level throughout the 1990's. Overbooked finish and he wins the Southern title. Not too inspiring. -
[1993-01-16-WWF-Superstars] Crush and Doink the Clown
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
We do have business suit Sgt. here. Really memorable angle which says a lot for a mid card feud that you can so vividly recollect 21 years later. For instance, I can tell you what Legacy was doing skit wise in 2009. Only part I didn't like about this was Vince trying to convince the crowd that Doink took his legit arm off which made no sense as you could see him using both to beat Crush up with the fake cast.- 11 replies

[1993-01-15-JWP] Mayumi Ozaki & Dynamite Kansai vs Takako Inoue & Yumiko Hotta
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Great , great stuff just behind Flair vs. Hart for me. Kansai is probably my favorite joshi worker at this point and she was super in this acting like the ace of the little brother promotion and going toe to toe with Hotta. Inoue being the clear #4 here was also a neat dynamic. I am not justifying a few of the blown spots she had and that prevents this from being a sure fire MOTYC for me, but it kind of makes sense from a META level as Inoue was over her head in this particular match. The kicks, and intertwining stories made this draining to watch and I can't wait to consume all of the 1993 joshi. (****1/2)- 27 replies

Agree that this match really took me by surprise as it is great and really should be talked up more with the great Clash matches. It felt like a slightly lesser version of the Enforcers vs. Steamboat/Dustin tag match. Douglas has shown a lot of great fire in this run and this was no exception. As the moments pass by, you can almost see Austin and Pillman gelling as a team. The finish was super as PIllman was being vicious just killing both guys with the belt shots with reckless abandon. Super stuff. (****)

[1993-01-11-WWF-Raw] RAW commercial & Bobby Heenan skits
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Decent Hennan bit but still pretty cartoony and kind of Prime Time wrestling - ish for something they wanted to push as Raw. However, as meekly as it started, this was the beginning of the longest run episodic television program in history so we have that. -
[1993-01-10-WCW-Main Event] Cactus Jack vs Paul Orndorff (Street Fight)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Damn good match that really felt like they made every show in the WCW universe important at the time as we have seen WorldWide in addition to WCW SN really develop angles so far in the year and have different things going on. I appreciated the stiffness Paul brought to this as he didn't mind dishing it out to Cactus. Cactus took some good bumps of course and the finish is really memorable and helps thrust him into the forefront for what should have been a main event run along the lines of DDP rising up in 1997 - 1998. [1996-01-21-NJPW-New Year Special] Shinjiro Otani vs El Samurai
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
This has been one of my favorite threads to read of all in the match discussion archives. Few matches in Japan that are considered classics nowadays are new discoveries to me. For some reason or another, I never got around to this one. That is a shame as I think it is comfortably the best New Japan match of the 1990's. The junior stuff we have seen in subsequent years plays off of this with certain narratives like Otani not keeping his emotions in check or resulting back to moves that work once too often but this really played them off in spades. I love focused body work and this had it in spades initially with Otani going after the leg of Samurai and Samurai responding by cranking out the arm of Otani. I thought the selling of both was tremendous as it persisted throughout the match and they both were favoring the respected hurt limbs. That is key considering the backbone of the match is around that arm and leg work. The finish was great as Samurai plays a stoic warrior in a manner that would make Misawa proud which greatly contrasts the emotions running through Otani's face. He knew this was his match and yet he let his emotions get the best of him and it slipped through his finger tips too. I think the best moment is actually after the match with one camera angle. Otani is walking to the back to extremely polite applause of the crowd. They knew they had seen a classic and responded accordingly. In the upper left hand corner, one person isn't clapping. Otani's dad has a look of disappointment that will melt. Its beautiful storytelling. Other ancillary factors like the surrounding UWFi vs. New Japan mat stuff only emphasize the depth of this match. A masterpiece on all accounts. (*****)- 23 replies

I have really enjoyed the USWA of the 90's but the big criticism is that the angles pretty much spudder out. This may be a case of not having arena footage available, but it can be frustrating at times.

Want to make sure you are talking about the 1/4/13 match POL and not the February 2012 one where Okada wont the IWGP.

[1996-01-20-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Ric Flair & Randy Savage

Good interview and Slick Ric drops the Liz mentions which of course sets Savage off. Fun to see this heel run from Ric based on the 97-99 stuff of him almost exclusively as a face.- 9 replies

[1996-01-20-USWA-TV] PG-13 vs Tracy Smothers & Jesse James Armstrong
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I agree with everyone else that this was a good tv match given a lot of time to develop. Jesse looks to have more indication of how to put a match together here than with the NAO when he was mostly clamoring to the fans. Good finishing brawl making up for the time limit draw too. Memphis has been pretty basic stuff so far in 1996 but highly effective. (**3/4) -
So this was a different Ultraman? Anyway, I was psyched going in and some stuff was completely nutty but most of the stuff here was blown and there wasn't any rhyme of reason to it. Tack on a LONG post match and this was pretty disappointing for me as I had Psicosis as the guy to watch in 1996. I know with his style you probably aren't going to get a great ratio but this was just a mess. (**)

Solid action but from a pairing I never enjoy very much. Sting did do a good job here timing his comebacks. The main thing was after the match where Hulk gets into Macho's face for being the #1 contender. I know it is jarring but it is simply amazing how much Hogan transformed for the better in just a short amount of time. (**1/4)

[1996-01-15-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Arn Anderson, Kevin Sullivan & Brian Pillman
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Big time business meeting between the Horseman and DOD. Pillman gets mouthy and put right in his place by Arn. This kind of set the ball rolling for Arn being the godfather type figure for the next few years. It is a role that works well for him.- 10 replies

If I chose to watch wrestling instead of seeking out other hobbies, why does that make me a loser? I think it is fair to say that most of us here have some sort of down time at some point during the day. If not, you are busier than me but here is my point of comparison. I am working right now between 45-60 hours a week, add a two hour commute each day and that is my time devoted to work. I also am married and have a newborn. Between all of that I feel I have a decent social life where I can get together with my friends if I so desire. I also am able to watch tv shows and board games with my wife. My wrestling watching breaks down into watching before 6:00 AM (when my wife leaves for work) and 6:30 AM (when I leave). In addition if she really wants to watch a tv show and I don't care and the baby is asleep, I will watch then. Have things been given up? Sure, I havent watched any NBA this year so far, but if I enjoy watching wrestling more than any other hobby, why does that automatically make me a loser? In regards to this idea, I will be tracking the stuff I watch mainly through the match discussions already created but plan on having a master file of everything watched in 2015.
