Best Goldberg promo yet as he displayed his serious demeanor and didn't sound like a whiner that was impressive.

[1999-01-11-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash vignette
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1999
One of the funniest NWO spoofs period and funnier than anything DX has done in a year. The way they took Flair's promo about tradition and turned it on its head was great.- 5 replies

I thought this was super and Luger was great at being a bully at first. Tony was also great explaining itself how unfair this was given the size difference. Konnan being out of the group made sense to me and care about him which is rare and they were able to play up their past history. This was a good start to a feud that could have been really good at elevating Rey/Konnan as Luger has one more run.

Raven vs. Piper may be the battle of who in WCW has consistently annoyed me more in the past year. Wonder what house they used to film these and that could be a fun bit of trivia for me.

[1999-01-11-WCW-Nitro] Chavo Guerrero Jr and Norman Smiley
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1999
Man, Pepe is gone already? Feels like he was honestly around a lot longer. This is good mid card comedy stuff to me which is fine for a promotion to have one instance of and this got pretty over with the crowd.- 5 replies

This was weirdly produced but had enough enjoyable moments that I liked it. The highlight was Klondike Bill and Eric going at it with him setting up the ring. It also plays well into the end of the night.

[1999-01-11-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair, J.J. Dillon and the LWO
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1999
It says something that this may be the worst Flair promo of the past two months and it wasn't bad by any means. He reinstates JJ who still a. has terrible fashion for ties and b. does that weird things with his hands. Gene makes matters worse by spoiling the Goldberg main event announcement. Highlight for me was the Juvy/Flair interactions and all LWO members oblige Flair's requests except for Rey which really makes no sense at all with how reluctant he was to join. I want to set up a fantasy booking scenario where Eddy comes back and has big feuds with Flair.- 4 replies

[1999-01-10-ECW-Guilty As Charged] Shane Douglas vs Taz
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1999
I really think that now we saw this terrible conclusion that this feud is the definitive just because something is drawn out doesn't mean it is better argument. This had no heat whatsoever and so many moving parts that it was impossible to care about Taz's big moment of winning the ECW championship.- 5 replies

Well, I predictably hated this. No heat, sloppy spots that were disjointed, a year into Credible being elevated and no one still giving a shit, whatever the fuck Nicole Bass was wearing, Funk as a heel just because, Tommy looking like a dope again, should I continue?

Dudleys' give a promo while they are performing a beatdown. It seems odd at this point in time to build up PE as these legends the Dudley's have to beat to solidify themselves but I guess you got to do what you can to push the promotion overall.

I really don't like/care about this Funk heel run at all. He almost seems irrelevant. I will say that at this moment in time comparing Flair to Funk, I don't think it is close who is ahead on the promo work.

[1999-01-10-ECW-Guilty As Charged] Paul E. Dangerously promo

Paul E doesn't bullshit and he believes in this locker room more than anyone else. This was a great glimpse into the build up speeches Paul gave backstage countless times to talent.- 4 replies

Wow, this match impressed the hell out of me. Crazy Max looked good but raw in the 1998 match. Here, they were a polished machine maybe only a slight step behind the Kaientai glory days. They hit everything cleanly here and were mugging it up along the way. As a result, the crowd was incredibly behind the faces when they had glimmers of hope. I loved the two guys jumping in the crowd. THis was non stop action for 17 minutes and made me optimistic for the time being of the future of all of these guys. (****)

if the yes chant didnt go viral last year...
soup23 replied to chrislatimer's topic in Pro Wrestling
I did move this to pro wrestling because while it is specific to the YES Chant initially, it is more hypothetical on where he would have been booked for the future and it can lead to a multitude of other discussion on the crowd chant vs. booking of the product debate that doesn't deal with Bryan. -
09/04/91 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue My Rankings: ****1/2 (#17 overall for 1991, #6 for All Japan), this was the last match of 1991 overall I ranked at ****1/2 I think this maybe more than any other match watched in the series so far is missing context of added matches surrounding it. The submission stuff had been building and was a neat theme in the Summer of 1991 making All Japan different and not mundane since Misawa and Co. vs. Jumbo and Co. had been waged for over a year. This culminated that and it was great to see Jumbo submit to this front facelock. Not sure if this or the 12/90 tag match is my least favorite from the series of these four but that shows how great the run of other matches was. 10/15/91 - Mitsuharu Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi vs Jumbo Tsuruta, Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi My Ranking: ****1/4 (#21 overall for 1991, #7 for All Japan) This was my 2nd highest ranked 6 man of the year and a great way to insert Kikuchi into the mix. I am still unsure where Kikuchi will land on Parv's favorite list as he is a good spunky underdog that can sell but I think he does have some offense to impress Parv too. 10/24/91 - Jumbo Tsuruta vs Toshiaki Kawada My Ranking: ****1/2 (#10 overall for 1991, #4 for All Japan) I thought I was ever so slightly on this match since some throw it up as top 20 of the 90's for All Japan. Parv was way lower on that and I think he is misguided for two reasons. 1. He seems to criticize the basic build of this match. I loved the grounded nature of this match and thought that would be something that Parv would appreciate. The basic nature of this match resisted the standards changing overall in wrestling. Also, Jumbo just submitted to a front facelock so wearing him down with holds especially centered around the neck feels like a great strategy to me. 2. I think you have to understand that Kawada is still a decent amount below the hierarchy of Jumbo. Parv seemingly had them in 1 and 1A stature. Misawa got a great upset win for 6/8/90 that caught Jumbo off guard but he hasn't been able to achieve that again in singles competition and he also failed on his Triple Crown challenge on 4/18. I think Kawada getting this much of a chance against the ace in Jumbo for the Triple Crown at this point in his career was good and something that never would have happened in 1989. You can contrast this to the 5/24/91 Jumbo vs. Kobashi match to see a match where Kawada is clearly ahead of Kobashi but not in the league with Jumbo just yet. 11/29/91 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue My Ranking: ****1/2 (#5 overall in 1991, #2 in All Japan) You guys touched on most of the points for this but I loved how the draw snuck up on me and think this is a great match to show how all four contributed to making the match great. I still think you are being premature Parv in announcing that no one will overtake Jumbo. Again, that may be true and I dont begrudge you of that, but it feels like someone saying that Flair in 1982 would not be the greatest wrestler of all time, there is still the glory days for Kawada/Kobashi/Misawa ahead and I don't think you can find more psychology rich matches than what you have in store in the mid 1990's.

Thanks for the backstory Flik. I have watched two Busa matches today and liked him a good deal so kudos to him. I thought his dives and wrestling mixed in with this held it all together. The bumps were good and while this lacked some intensity and visceral violence of the best brawls, it was a fun watch. Hot post match too. (***1/4)

I got into this a good deal and really like the variety we are seeing on the first bit of 1996 footage and where short matches have stepped up and delivered. This had good brawling aspects and a dramatic finish and post match. They played up the hoss-battle aspects of the match well. (***1/2)

[1996-01-08-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage vs Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
This would have been huge in 1988. Now, the fans really don't give a shit about Hulk and give him a response to echo that. Arn once again shows why he is one of the best tag workers of all time being excellent here and doing little things to keep Macho cut off. Big schmozz happens at the finish but it puts Giant over huge and we get some heel on heel action with Horseman and DOD going at it. (**3/4)- 14 replies

[1996-01-08-WWF-Raw] Brother Love: Ted DiBiase & The Ringmaster
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Brother Love being back does not make me happy. Austin has a weird cadence to this interview and rambles on. It is amazing that it was only three years from this guy and the one I saw on the 1/4/99 Raw. -
The journalist in Fresno seem to consist of 12 year old kids and bored grandpas, explain your profession Childs. Shawn is not taking doctors advice and is entering the Royal Rumble. Thank goodness. Scheme announces he is backing Vader in the Rumble but call the hotline to get the full scoop. The hypocrisy of Ross talking about someone else having a hotline is funny.

[1996-01-06-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Well, good to see this format of USWA matches was happening in 1996. I hope for more PG-13 tags as I think they are great as a team together and would be much more well known if they would have been in higher profile places. Title change happens which seems kind of weird heading into the round robin challenge but the studio crowd popped big. (**1/4)- 10 replies

[1996-01-06-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13 feud recap
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Damn good recap here of four teams that may have past their prime talent for the most part but can be interesting. Something seems weird about seeing Lance and Dave in the booth this late. Rich and Gilbert give a good promo with some strong words for PG-13. Armstrong and Smothers interrupt that and say they are being disrespected. USWA seems to be able to clean up on the SMW scraps.- 10 replies

IWA is still doing their Deathmatch stuff but the fad is certainly on the decline without anyone new of note really being any good even from a deathmatch buzz standpoint.

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Public Enemy vs The Gangstas
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
The Gangsters made dinner out of this match with Jack eating the pie and Mustafa taking a bite out of the bread. For a garbage, ECW brawl, this was pretty damn good with some comedic spots and all around plunder going on. PE wins their send off and then gets a nice promo and video to bid them goodbye (**3/4)
