[1991-08-24-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Cactus Jack
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
Agree with the gang that Jack has grown in confidence in the year since he left even though this was a short snippet. Where did he hone his craft? He announces his return.- 6 replies

The DWB/Embry interplay wasn't bad but it did feel like a step down from the stuff we have seen and didn't set my world on fire even with Boogie Woogie coming out to clean house. Feels like the USWA is sort of bridging now into their next big feud. Christopher Honey Love could only be a wrestling manager. Love lays it out there and says he is the savior of the USWA due to the king making other promotions go out of business. Love mixes in Honey about 5-6 times throughout this promo. Love gives Lawler a two week notice before he is fired. Love reveals the Dragon Master from the box. Love proclaims him as a 7 foot 3 giant. He takes off the dragon mask to reveal another mask. Love calls him an international star. Humongous coming out and being eye to eye with Brown is hilarious. He talks to the crowd. Samantha comes out with the hair flowing. We get a Sherri proposition in the same vein as Rumble 91. They have a terrible struggle over the mask. Bull Pain attacks. The way they announce He Man Randy Lewis shows how much faith they put in this angle. Awful week for Memphis tv.

Story time from Jake. He gives a good parable between a rabbit and snake and how dangerous a snake can be. I can get behind calling the Warrior a rabbit. Sid gets a pretty legitimate pop coming out to talk to Gene. They really portray that the match really relies on Sid's bias. Okerlund calls him a true blue Hulkamaniac but Sid culls that thought and says again justice will be served. Bobby has a hold of the belt and calls out Hogan with it.

I thought for a second that Nagasaki was Kubuki with the lavish entrance. This was very fun to watch especially after the last traditional match. The meshing of styles here worked and again the match flowed into a nice progession. Octagon in particular looked more inspired than he usually does. Post match promo and brawl made for a chaotic scene. Great show overall.

[1991-08-23-CMLL] Chavo & Eddy & Mando Guerrero vs El Satanico & MS-1 & Masakre
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
I really appreciated the gradual build of this match. I initially expected either a brawl or the Guerreros flying around. Instead, we had a basic first fall with some really good trios leg work on each competitor. The rudos taking the second fall by upping the intensity to ensure they wont lose the match was a nice touch. The third fall brings about more traditional trios spots and that felt more rewarding with what preceded it. Really good stuff. -
The Titans referencing that on their latest show made me interested. Awesome that someone just puts the facelock online.

This is not a bad choice at all given the hype going in.

Fun seeing a Fujiwara squash essentially after all the other shoot style matches felt even. This wasn't dragged out for 35 minutes, but after hearing about Backlund vs. Race, don't show this match to Parv. I thought it was good fun myself.

I enjoyed it and it continued the All Japan theme of 1991 in certain matches like this and Taue/Kawada with more hate attached to it. Jumbo was being a huge dick in this match and really abused Kobashi. Kobashi acted so sympathetic and Misawa seemed concerned. Looking forward to the All Japan fall.

The Vordell Walker match links to the Radicalz 10 man tag

Zeus vs. Abby from Puerto Rico is still my clubhouse leader for two guys in a decent marquee spot that had at least some experience up to this point.

I believe this move is called the IPS Driver Error. Did a legit spit take at this.

Thank you for giving us a shot. We reference the 80's project a lot in doing our shows.

Glad you have the correct opinion on this match Pete.

I had Rhenigans vs. Martel # 120, I demand a public apology from Parv.

Man i was enamored with this. The pace they were cutting in the first five minutes made it feel like to me it was going to a sprint. Then they toned it down and I was thinking perhaps another 30 minute draw. I really loved the build to the climatic finish and Shamrocks celebration after the Dragon Suplex was spectacular. I watched this match at 1:00 AM last night and was completely attached to it. Wonderful stuff and Shamrock is the surprise of 1991 for me.

[1991-08-18-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Barber Shop: Sensational Sherri
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
I enjoyed seeing Sherri have something to say about the wedding. Her impersonation of Elizabeth saying oh yeah was pretty spot on. I also always get a kick of Bobby on commentary talking about how good looking she is. Beefcake is being an instigator and calls her a witch to end the segment. -
[1991-08-18-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Hulk Hogan vs Sgt. Slaughter
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
Good popcorn match setting up SummerSlam but it doesn't feel like a marquee match and you wish they could have put something else more interesting together. Hell, heel Jake vs. face Hogan would have been a lot of fun as a bridge feud and him using the wedding thing to get his heat back. These two guys have had fun matches throughout the year but this was the least of them and where the hell was the Warrior? -
This was techincally very good but I couldn't connect with it in any other way because I didn't really buy the story here and it ended up feeling like just a collection of spots. Finlay was playing the heel but Benoit just looked gullible for trusting him. The clipping also was a complete turnoff. I really felt watching this match that Roderick Strong and Mike Bennett could have the same match as the 2nd match on a ROH show and no one would remember it.

I would love for Parv to watch this match. I still don't know if it was good or not but it was engaging and thought-provoking. Funk comes out like a madman and I expected his usual crazy brawl with backlund mixing up and doing his jumping around shine spots. Instead we get the typical Funk antics but then a match that legitimately consisted for most of its duration with a test of strength. Funk really milks it though and made little touches to keep it interesting. Really fun match to watch and analyze.

In some ways initially, it feels like they are releasing footage like Meltzer is doing with the old Oberservers releasing only one a week. It doesn't seem to have affected him/Alvarez much but I will say that plays a part in why I no longer subscribe to the Observer as we are almost six years into his partnership with Bryan and are only almost up to 1997 in the archived Observers.

Daniel Bryan, WWE Network, VOW MOTY (Voices of Wrestling)
soup23 replied to FedEx227's topic in Publications and Podcasts
The MOTY roundup was very good cap on an excellent project overall. I did enjoy the DG tag mentioned as both of you guys surprise match but thought that my style limitations in regards to a. lack of selling b. fairly random and blatant interference and c. too long for a spotfest hindered me voting for it in my top 10. I'm still amazed at some of the #1 overall votes and thought that added to the depth of the year overall even if I didn't think all of the matches that got #1 votes were necessarily good. Daniel Bryan rant was extremely spirited but I couldn't disagree with anything Joe said and am glad that the Austin rise was mentioned. That is something that has been very interesting to track as I make my way through 1997. Even in Jan-March which is 6-8 months after KOTR 1996, Austin isn't getting huge pops when he comes out. -
2 biggest things I noticed from the slides: 1. 1500 hours at launch- so this seems to indicate all of the PPV's being available at launch. Not sure if this was confirmed before or not. 2. 5-10 hours of vault footage a week. This is disappointing to me and seems like we are going to be getting 1 archived Raw, 1 archived Challenge/Superstars/etc and then 1 random territory show a week. I was really hoping for the Netflix model where new "seasons" would be released in decent intervals.
