[1993-12-04-WWF-Superstars] Reo's Roundup: Shawn Michaels
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in December 1993
Reo sucks. It is nice of Shawn to be dressed up for these segments and I dig the feud him and Razor are building. Razor popping the bubble with his toothpick was a nice touch. -
[1993-12-04-WWF-Superstars] Update: Continued tensions between Bret and Owen
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in December 1993
Owen is ready to blow and very upset over what happened at Survivor Series. Bret as the bigger brother says to let cooler heads prevail. -
[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Hulk Hogan vs Roddy Piper Contract Signing
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Pretty awesome hype job. Piper has been portrayed as more unhinged instead of crazy and delusional lately which is a better role for him. No Retreat, No Surrender!- 8 replies

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Rey Misterio Jr vs Ultimo Dragon
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
I see the argument that this is too one sided but I thought Rey sprinkled in enough flash and Ultimo was so strong on top that it mostly excused the way this was structured as an overall match. The juniors have had a great opportunity to announce all of the PPV's at this point and this was a great effort by even Dusty. Ultimo looked real strong coming out of here. ****- 18 replies

[1996-11-26-UWFi] Nobuhiko Takada & Naoki Sano vs Yoji Anjo & Gerard Gordeau
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Agree with Pete. I threw this on at 4;45 AM after a bottle feeding and was clinging to life to stay awake. Grodeau was awful and the match seemed to revolve around him inviting Sano and Takada into his personal grappling station. Sano and Anjo had a near ***** match but none of that fire was shown here and yeah the finish of the kick right to the gut, blah. **- 4 replies

Hate and betrayal. This is the story of what happens when one man can show you the darkness. Santo being in the cape and crotching down was great as he disrobed and started attack. I think El Dany sold everything the best as he was excellent in getting his revenge spots and going after Santo. ****

An iffy opening but I wouldn't call it bad. I agree with everyone that the back half was fantastic and especially the mixing of Akiyama and Patriot. I thought it was clever with the makeup of this match in that Kobashi is now the strongest of all being the TC holder but together AKiyama and Misawa are better as a team. ***3/4

A couple of key changes that have been included to the updated rules document. 1. We have made the determination to not include strictly on air characters that never wrestled. This resulted in the removal of Jim Cornette, Jimmy Hart, Grand Wizard and Miss Elizabeth from the nominations list. Our reasoning is since we are asking people to use the NJPW system and W stands for workrate, it was unfair to accurately these candidates by that same criteria since they never wrestled. By the same token, if you include the above then Gene Okerlund, Howard Finkel etc should be in consideration. 2. We have also decided that commentary is not a part of the process when judging such candidates like Gorilla Monsoon, Jesse Ventura, Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler. Please keep that in mind when arguing their cases.

Of all the blowaway AJ classics from the 90's that get talked up (this, 6/8/90, 6/9/95, 6/3/94, RWTL final, 1/20/97) this is the one I have watched the least in that I have probably only seen it 1-2 times before watching it this morning. That is strange because it is probably the most compact and succinct of all the matches mentioned. This goes at 24 minutes and feels like it ended at exactly the right time and the viewer is also left wanting more. I found it outstanding that over the course of 1993 in the wake of Jumbo being pushed out, we now have all four of these men as the cornerstones of the promotion that can be interjected into the main events against each other in Budokan and the results are still outstanding both from a quality and box office standpoint. Kobashi in particular is now maybe the #2 man on the totem poll beating Kawada here. That makes Kawada the tragic figure that becomes so attractive to many as he firmly is the other guy now in the rivalry and the fly in the ointment. His knee selling is sublime and played with ridiculous realism. My favorite two moments of the match is when Kobashi short punches in rapid succession the knee and the final wave of Misawa to Kobashi at the finish to end this thing. Man I love this match and it may just edge out Hokuto and Kandori because of the finish being just a smidge better. *****

Great match and I can't help but knowing the tour long injury/story of Kawada's leg helped peg this a few notches above the Misawa/Kobashi vs Doc/Bossman match. This had a great slugfest feel and already Taue was trying to help his partner out by just going after the opponents to keep them away from the bad wheel of his partner. Bossman as a mainstay in AJ is interesting to contemplate as I am watching this along with the 1996 RWTL and Ace is also turning in sublime performances. ****

What a blast as this was one that I had seen before but not for some time. The way Baba worked here felt more natural than him just sort of laughing along with himself for being in there with HDA. Here he showed some fire and the clothesline nearfall was great. Kobashi and Hansen go after each other one more time in the year and those short kicks Stan throws is great. I thought subtle Misawa here was excellent as he really shows how he thinks he is the guy now and that forearm against Baba supplants that. I thought this really set up nicely his big pin that comes in March of 1994. ****1/4

[1993-11-29-WWF-Raw] Bret Hart: Superstar of the Year
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
Luger having to come out there as the first loser to put over Bret was pretty sad. I do think this was the result of legit voting but the writing was on the wall in which side of the coin the fans preferred between Lex and Bret. -
I've checked out big time on these although it did look like the time stamp on Pritchards video said 1999 on it as the date.

[1993-11-27-WCW-Saturday Night] Starrcade announcement
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
Nice to see Gene here and he moves the angle along. The conflict between Flair and Vader has been superb and better than I remembered as I thought Starrcade was kind of rushed as a kid and more about Flair retiring or what not. The area they filmed this in really did look awful and they should be ashamed of themselves at how dingy it looked.- 9 replies

I had a lot of fun with this match. The exasperation of Tammy and Corny on the outside for the opening shine was entertaining. The heat sequence was good on Morton for when it lasted. Tammy really has grown as a manager. There is a quick camera shot of her petting Brian Lee's leg on the apron. That is a great bit of character work that shows she does at least care about who she is managing. Finish is excellent with the staredown between DWB and Smothers and them still not being able to shake hands quite yet. ***1/ 4

My goodness, there is trying to put a spin on something and then there is this. Between Lawler singing Santa Clause is Coming to Town to him literally hugging kids, this was a PR machine that has to be seen to be believed at how deep they were willing to go to "prove" Lawler's innocence. Truly one of the most repulsive things in the 1990's in wrestling.

Jarrett looked like a huge prick here and Christophers acting during the segment was really strong too as he was flabbergasted that Jarrett was just giving up the title. LOL at Eddie Marlin saying Christopher can't beat three guys "even though one is small." This was pretty sudden right turn in Jarrett turning heel after we just saw the Fabulous video a week or so before. The match was a hell of a lot of fun with Christopher having the crowd fully behind him but getting beat when JC ICe hits him with a weapon that he stuffs into his shorts. Interview afterward is fun with Dave wanting him to empty his pockets and we go right back into the new batch of challengers with Gaylord and Anthony. PG-13 says they will put the belts on the line if Anthony puts up his hair. **3/4 for the match a great USWA segment.

[1993-11-27-WWF-Superstars] Update: Owen Hart interview
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
The phone interview with Owen was really good. The angle from here to Mania is really one of my favorite angles that WWF has ever done and has the right tenor of brother vs brother under the service resentment. -
[1993-11-26-AAA] El Satanico vs Pirata Morgan (Hair vs Hair)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
What a gritty, beautiful brawl. Everything was grimy here and the hate jumped off the page. Satanico is a master at this in showing hate and patience all at the same time in a calculated and perverted manner. I liked how they kept the heel vs heel vibe throughout and it still was able to invest you as the viewer without even someone to really cheer for. Pretty easily my lucha MOTY. ****3/4- 8 replies

Great match. I may be slightly lower on it than Pete and Charles in that I may have preferred the 30 min Korakuen draw but this has been a strong tag league so far with Ace and Williams adding that gaijin depth that helps fill out a compelling tournament. Kawada selling his leg is always great and he does his A work here in performing it. Doc also looked really game flying from the top rope and them doing the decapitation to Kawada. I agree that Doc vs Kawada was more the focus here but it was always compelling and it played into the finish with Kawada giving his whole arsenal to Doc including some spot on kicks to put him away. At twenty minutes, this did breeze by. ****
