  1. I thought this was a good interview. He is certainly unpolished but he has some glimpses like when Kevin asks him if the pressure is increased wrestling in MSG and he shoots that down right away.
  2. Good class of all of the stalwarts before Vince took over the company for the most part. Shane inducting his granddad was a nice touch.
  3. Wont ruin this either then but I feel I am a bit lower on it than most of the commentators so far even though it did have a nice progression. The 2 Cold entrance however is amazing. Him dancing around the ring slapping hands shows how much charisma that he really had. 2 Cold is a perplexing figure for me in some ways because I do like the guy but also think he is overrated a tad here so I have some mixed emotions. This was a good send off for him in ECW.
  4. When I close my eyes and am asked to think of an ECW match, this one pops into my head for better or worse. The atmosphere is good with the fans hitting that nice combination of drunk/stoned and not being overtly distracting. The spots here range from being hit well enough to being hit with shockingly great execution like the Kronus SFTD. I was actually ready to give the match **** around 15 minutes in but the last five minutes lost me a bit as well as the crowd as you can see them sitting down after being up for around 5-7 minutes. Then you have the cliched five more minutes, then double overtime, then you both are winners none finish that really annoyed me. A really fun match but also a flawed one. That is ECW in an encapsulation. ***1/2
  5. These four guys have created a pretty awesome unheralded feud. This was really strong in the front half and back 7-8 minutes. The middle portion lost me a bit but everything with Ace throwing forearms at Jun and Misawa and Doc stretching each other out was extremely entertaining to me. I liked Ace escaping the Tiger Suplex at the finish too as that put him over as a player in the promotion and at least right now, he feels like he belongs. ****
  6. Confirming the Chikara show discussed here was the Anniversary show. A little more background on the Punk vs Hamrick match. Punk had a head injury on the NWA -TNA PPV the Wednesday before. This brought back memories of his fractured skull the prior year. Therefore, the show starts with Punk coming out and saying he isn't going to be able to wrestle. This brings out Hamrick who was making his IWA-MS debut and he swears that they will have a good old school technical wrestling match where he won't go after the head. The reason this is my favorite of the Hamrick stunts where he pulls this spot is that he really got the crowd invested and bought in. They are politely clapping along as they do the first minute or two of chain wrestling and up to the injury. When the "injury" happens everyone in the crowd gasps and stuff is perfect like Ian mouthing FUCK as Punk motions for him to come into the ring. Of course, not only did Hamrick create a ruse but he also gets up and Yakuza kicks Punk right in the head which he promised not to. Prazak on commentary is great here and when Ian returns he is all sorts of pissed off. The match from there is a fight and a great bit of back and forth. I am inclined to agree with Bix that this is at least Punk's most underrated match as it is a wonderful piece of wrestling storytelling. In fact, this IWA-MS show overall (Spirit of 76) is probably my favorite IWA-MS show period that wasn't a KOTDM or TPI night. The Axl turn on Ian in the main is also well done and has Patti going after Axl in a great moment.
  7. Reunions in wrestling can be tricky. Especially when it is 10+ years like this one. I still remember how excited I was to see Vince McMahon and Bret Hart have their in ring confrontation on 1/4/10 and how that immediately evaporated when I saw just how much of a shell Hart was. This match reminded me of going to a Pearl Jam or other rock concert in current day. Eddie Vedder isn't going to be jumping off any scaffolding just like Devil and Chigusa aren't going to produce the ****3/4 classic they did in 1985. Eddie forgets some lyrics and we laugh along just like we do when some of the Crush Gals double teams aren't executed quite as cleanly as you would hope. That being said, this did a good job of bringing everything together. The interference on the outside from Ozaki was minimal and Hokuto and Masami do use their sword weapons at multiple times but that kind of creates a tougher heel for the Gals to climb. Masami in particular was probably my favorite competitor in the match with her facials still being on point. Both Chigusa and Lioness blade which adds peril to the proceedings and I actually thought the match built in a way where I was unsure who was going to actually win. The crowd is really hot and excited to see Lioness and Chigusa team up. Overall, this was a big success for me but I understand YMMV. I don't need to see the promotion built around these two going forward but for this night, they were queens of the ring. ****
  8. Decided to give this a look since it is a title change. I was surprised by how over Too Cool still was as the crowd popped huge for them coming out. The action here is nothing and only a couple of minutes long which is disappointing but the finish here is fun and plays off E&C being the ultimate opportunists over the past month or so. Joe C (Kid Rock stage sidekick) comes in the ring and interferes allowing Too Cool to win the belts to another big pop. It felt like they changed the titles just to have the moment with Joe C but this was a good thank you to Too Cool who really have gotten over a pretty dreadful gimmick along with Rikishi. 3/4*

On the guide, we created a NJPW system as a metric which does have promo ability as one of the four prongs. In addition the N has intangibles and big moments.
  10. This match kind of encapsulated the problems I have with Hayabusa overall as a worker and while I can never truly consider him great. The opening matwork is good when that is the focal point, the selling of the leg is good when that is the focal point. Also, the highspots and bombs are spectacular in the back half of the match. Unfortunately, none of those three things go together at all into one cohesive match and therefore it is unsuccessful. **1/2
  11. Love the song for Funk and the clips they showed fit nicely. Classy stuff from ECW.
  12. I had a lot of fun with this. KDX was stooging off and they even had their poses down. The face term was well represented and Delphin outshined Sasuke pretty heavily here IMO. I actually think Delphin is probably a better worker historically than Sasuke and at the very least more consistent. I don't think this was really trying to be a classic, just another chapter in the feud overall and they accomplished that initiative. ***3/4
  13. Holy shit, I can't even believe what I just saw. WCW has very few missteps between now and Starrcade 97 but this makes Pipers crazy Alcatraz promo look like a stroke of genius in building a match.
  14. That Sting shirt was awful and $22 plus S&H? Yikes. THe highlight here for me was Tony cracking up at the NWO hijinks Fall Brawl 1993 style. This was a really long term angle but one I enjoyed most of the way through and Larry was presented well.
  15. Im unsure if this Outsiders as benefactor is just Matt's crackpot fantasy booking but its pretty brilliant. I liked this a lot and it was a natural way to elevate DDP while also getting him over organically to the crowd.
  16. Some more good clips. Again, I do like this feud but agree it feels like the world vs Brian Christopher at the moment and while Too Sexy is fine to me, he is not ace babyface material for a prolonged period of time.
  17. Been a hater on Pulp Fiction but this was one of the better ones in recent memory. I especially really liked the Raven promo in around all of the chairs as he cut a promo with focus for once that didn't make him come across as incredibly whiny and petty.
  18. I thought Sid might pull a Paul E against Missy by staring into Marlenas two big beautiful eyes but it was not to be as he wins and celebrates quickly.
  19. My wife watched this with me last night and commented that I could never insult the acting on Days of Our Lives again. This is the kind of trainwreck tv that I succumb to from time to time watching blocks of Cops but I can't say I found it incredibly compelling as a wrestling angle and I too took notice of Lawler's announcing tone throughout being short and calling people an idiot over and over. One of the more memorable WWF segments of all time but that doesn't necessarily make it one of the best.
  20. Agree that as a standalone segment this was really fun and a great beatdown but in the greater confines of USWA in 1996, it feels cheap that Wolfie turned so quickly and that him and Bill are all of a sudden buddies after their legit near death feud on each other.
  21. This was an awesome match in the classic title style. That is one of my favorite disciplines of wrestling and this was a great iteration of it. I think my favorite part was the way Dandy's arm was worked over.. Everything looked really hurtful with the attack BW provided and Dandy sold it really well and in more of an US style IMO of a straight isolated appendage. The final fall had a lot of great drama as to who would win and I don't want to spoil the ending but it took me by surprise while watching but felt well deserved. I always find it a treat when I don't know who won a match going into these things that are 20+ years old. ****1/2

    PTBN GWWE

Over at PTBN, we are starting the process of discussing and ranking the Greatest Wrestler Ever for WWE. The span of time we are going for is from 1953 - current day and we are asking for lists in the top 100. Below is a link to the facebook discussion forum as well as the rules. For me personally, this will be an interesting list because of how much weight I'll give to the workrate quotient considering the recent tendency for WWE to have really good workrate output. You think about someone like Steve Austin and the amount of ****+ matches he had in WWF and it really may not be as many as someone like say Roman Reigns by this point. How much do I weight that? Will gladly be happy for any PWOers to jump into the discussion which kicked off last night and surprised me with the interaction and quality. https://www.facebook.com/groups/498288050516643/ https://docs.google.com/document/d/11_CDj7NYjZiiK2lobC-FZKPE8rFiEf0NB-6DO4vOpE0/edit
  23. Kim goes flying over Brian Lee head first into the announce table. This was a good chaotic scene to end the show on.
  24. Hot angle and I agree with everyone else that Tracy really helped it on commentary not coming to DWB's aid. The return of Dirty White Girl was fun and could set up some great stuff between her and Tammy.
  25. Really nice to see this long a tv match in Memphis studio and they reward us by having a fun match with a lot of southern tropes being utilized. I liked how we saw a ton of action but I wouldn't have felt cheated if I was going to the house show circuit either if this is what the viewer got on TV. The match had to be just good enough for the live customers to continue to come out. ***
