  1. That graphic looked really modern. I thought this did a great job hyping the PPV. We hear Taker has been added but I am sad they didn't show a clip of him opening the coat as that was a big moment for my childhood fandem. Hart cuts a really good promo against Lawler and his Knights. We also get a good promo by Corny for the tag match. The card actually looks pretty good and I am a mark for running Survivor Series on Thanksgiving Eve.
  2. This felt like a nice sized MSG show they were building to and Lawler adds a lot of intrigue as to just who was behind the Doink persona and the matchmaking in general.
  3. I am loving the joshi right now in 1993. I thought this was really layered. Sure, Toyota probably could have sold the back damage more but I really loved the way this was worked in that Aja is the strongest single force but Hokuto and Toyota might just be the better team. Hasegawa had to prove herself a lot throughout the match and was a good fly in the ointment for her opponents. I thought Aja looked great and certainly stood out as the biggest bully in the yard. Her getting pinned in the finale was amplified based on her performance up to that point. ****
  4. Meat and Potatoes wrestling. This match helps build the case for Tenryu as GOAT because this was a decent house show but nothing extraordinary and it wasn't being filmed for tv. That said, Tenryu still brought a ton of stiffness and effort to the match and the handheld angle was great making it feel like we are getting a birds eye view of it all. This was like a local steak from a restaurant in that the meat is a little fatty but the taste is still great. ***1/2
  5. If I didn't know the stabbing had occurred, I would say after this they were setting up Austin vs Flair and Sid vs Vader as the two main Starrcade attractions again. I didn't really like the finish bait and switch here but the action was good and Vader and Flair seem to have good chemistry with each other. It was also nice to hear Jesse on commentary play this one pretty straight and even admit that Flair got kind of screwed.
  6. Really good sprint. Pillman is the king of that type of match and this hearkened back to his series vs Windham from 1991. The finish was a little clumsy but this did a better job of getting the hatred over than the promos or the actual turn. This is kind of the reverse HBK/Janetty in that the actual turn and build was disappointing but the match delivered. ***1/2
  7. Awesome, awesome match. I loved Hozumi insulting the other team right away by fanning them in annoying fashion. Once the match starts proper, it is just a sprint of pure brutality. The Kandori and Bull segments are amazing and full of hatred. I have been relistening to my GWE pod and was surprised I had Bull at 22 thinking it might be a tad high. A match like this confirms that maybe I had her too low because she is just a monster that is directing traffic, unleashing hell and building up believably for her opponent. Kandori does her part too and every arm submission felt like life or death. I loved this match. ****1/4
  8. Loving this feud and can't for the life of me see why they weren't heavily involved in one of the Survivor Series matches. Vince getting shoved was a shock to see and Savage is really playing up the pissed off guy looking for revenge persona.
  9. This was a fun brawl throughout the gym that used the building and the weapons to keep the action moving. I thought it was nice that even with the crowd brawling, it seemed pretty easy to follow the action for both the live audience and the people watching the handheld. Sabu takes some nasty bumps in this and is more crazy than Funk. These two match up a good bit throughout the 90's and this is a welcome addition to that feud. ***1/4
  10. This was more excusable because it was kids but they really ran these a long time without any good results.
  11. I'm still not buying the reasons here and it really feels like they just broke them up to push Austin up the card all of a sudden but then we know they got cold feet on that as well. Parker and Austin should work as a duo but they didn't have much chemistry here.
  12. I liked this better than the prior week's Bodies promo even though Cornette did have an uphill battle explaining everything going on with the rules of the match. Pritchard and Del Ray are a delight watching them stooge around as Corny talks.
  13. I agree this was the weakest so far as Margie didn't do anything physical which has really sold the skits. This one does end abruptly as well.
  14. A long match but one that was pretty confident in itself and its course of action and for that I am appreciative. Barr and Eddy gelled well as a team here and really helped work a rudo tag style against the top tecnicos in the country. Each fall never felt rushed at all and this match carried a classic vibe to it but with updated 1990's moves being executed. The final fall dives by santo were spectacular as always. Just wonderful and great lucha that symbolized the style. ****
  15. Really awesome match and one that should get talked up more. I guess because it was the semi of a tag tournament. This had everything you want from these four guys. A molten sumo hall crowd and all sorts of chippness and pairings that work well with each other. Hash vs Hase was the key issue and they delivered as they should as the best two heavies of the decade but this was also a good verison of Chono vs Muto and when Chono and Muto mixed it up with the others, the match didn't falter in any way. I really enjoyed the cut off spots and the way each mistake was emphasized as being critical. The finish has the crowd going complete apeshit and I actually want to see the final to see if the momentum carried over for Muto/Hase. I can't think of a New Japan 90's heavy tag I enjoyed as much as this one. ****1/2
  16. We get the disclaimer from Styles before this starts but I found this offensive in another way. It was awful. The setting was odd as shit and Madusa made zero sense at all and Sherri really didn't have a way to respond. The end result is them yelling at each other with the viewer left perplexed why. 1993 ECW has a lot of bad on it.
  17. There is spectacle wrestling and then there is this. If you are going to do a wacky gimmick match like this, I do say go all in and they certainly did that here to the detriment of the third degree burns they received. The pitch dark arena besides the torches added a lot of atmosphere to this one. Kanemura is nuts taking that powerbomb onto the fire and the amount of water that was dumped on him in the aftermath was frightening to watch. ***
  18. I so want to like this because the structure is well done and Flair is bumping around and doing power spots and what not to help Sid get over but the crowd feels like they are at a wake and Sid didn't really give much in the way of a good to decent performance like he would in 1996-97 vs Bret and Shawn. A good match to watch but this should have made anyone fearful for Starrcade before the scissors incident. **3/4
  19. My god, this was just brutality at its finest. The Bat Bat match in early October felt restrained but that wasn't the case here as Ono was doing huge kicks a minute in. Ikeda and Ishikawa also really worked in a lot of striking and had some grotesque exchanges even for those two. Who does that leave but ultimate utility player Otsuka who executes some exciting throws and other elements to keep the match engaging. This was honestly one of the better BattlARTS matches of the 90's. ****1/4
  20. How legit was Angle with not knowing basic stuff like there is a 3 count in wrestling and rope breaks, etc. He really sounded like some kid seeing the magic trick for the first time. The match was short but served its purpose for the segment. Taz calls out Sabu.
  21. Angle gets a nice reception. Taz comes out and looks cool as shit with his tracksuit junkies. He gives Kurt some props but also teases some tension and lets him know who the pro really is.
  22. A good back and forth here that sets up their upcoming match. Austin is just an irritable prick and is so anti authority right now beating up production people. He still is doing it in a heel way which I appreciated. It is clear they have something with him now that can utilized.
  23. This looked rough and overbooked for the story that was coming in. I didn't exactly want to run out and watch the match in full. Overall, Savage and Hogan is a feud that more times than not missed the mark for me. The visual of Piper coming out was pretty neat. I am unsure if he meant to say NWA or meant NWO but he was pretty unhinged overall. This was clearly a play on nostalgia with the roles reversed but as of now, it is still working and entertaining.
  24. Parker and Sherri feel so dated out there and yeah, I despised the babyface stuff and clamoring to the crowd that the Outsiders were doing. It took them a good while to win the tag belts but up until 1999, the straps really didn't mean much of anything.
  25. Put me in the camp that loved this. The moves and flash of Rey was well executed besides the botch on the outside that was quickly covered up. Dean was an excellent ring general just grinding him throughout the match and working stuff in a very US heavy heel way but effectively. His chinlock means something and the ramp up to the final stretch was extremely natural. I also had forgotten who won this match so the nearfalls off the rana and first powerbomb fooled me. The finish they do utilize is brutal. ****
