Edge wasn't nearly a big enough name at that point to be taking out Lesnar and Goldberg. The fans would have shit on that just as much. Edge only really became anything resembling a star after the Matt Hardy/Lita stuff and the shocking first Money In The Bank cash in against Cena, followed up by 'live sex' and the other bullshit they put out for his Rated R gimmick. Speaking of Hardy, I remember being a pretty big deal when he got left off the XX card. He was still hot with the Mattitude stuff and rumor at the time had him facing Mark Henry at the show before Henry got hurt.

I did not like Dude Love initially because I really wanted him to be Cactus Jack, but the Dude quickly won me over. Once I got on board with it, I really grew to appreciate the talent he had to make all three work as well as they did and seem like completely different entities. His debut was a perfect payoff to the build, with Austin finally accepting him as his partner and Dude being "cool". Funk made a good point above about how 1997 was completely abnormal for Vince because he was so desperate and was chucking anything and everything at the wall, hoping something would stick and be successful. It was a surreal year to watch unfold live because every week was completely different outside of the big angles. Late 1997 was even more jarring as things just got ramped up and there was tons of anger, shoot comments and blurred heel/face lines after Summerslam. The Cornette stuff started in October, I think. I remember one of his first rants was about Age in the Cage.

I was there...it was the most surreal match I have ever seen live. Not sure I would change a thing though, I don't think the match would have been so good that its legacy could have outpaced the spectacle we got. If word hadn't spread, I am sure the match would have gone a bit differently, although I feel Austin still would have been cheered the most, followed by Brock. Goldberg was kind of dead in the water at that point anyway.
