  1. Interesting too, because this seems to be the first time in a while they stacked the three biggest matches in a row to close the show out. It seems we always look back in retrospect and say XXX match should have closed the show, no matter where the hottest match lies on the card (assuming it was main event quality).
  2. Speaking strictly for myself, it was the Taker match that killed me. I like Triple H, I like Brock, I was looking forward to the match, but when it started, I had nothing left. I'm fairly certain the same was true for the people I was with. Granted, if the match had started out hotter, it might have been different. Hard to say. Eventually, I need to watch the show and see how everything looked on tv. FWIW, I got the same idea as Matt on the GTS - Rope bounce - Tombstone spot. I thought the idea was Taker landed before Punk got the knee up, and shoved off to get the rope bounce. I am sure fatigue was part of it, but I just have a hard time accepting that if the story was hotter and they worked a quick paced match, fans wouldn't have found the energy for a big time Mania main event.
  3. The retirement stip messed everything up. Also, from some quick polling of more casual fans, not many care for Brock either.
  4. I still don't fully believe the Taker match killed Hunter/Brock. It just wasn't a good style of match for a big stadium show. Also, fans just aren't into Triple H in that sense...he is just not someone people care enough about to build retribution sympathy. Stick HBK in that slot in that same exact booking and story, and I think the crowd stays alive.
  5. Agreed. I think they could have stretched Henry out to Extreme Rules, but I get they wanted to make a big splash with Rock leaving.
  6. Good question. But, my argument (and maybe Loss's too) is that even if he turns "heel" officially, will that change? Or is it the nature of today's business? Within the scope of the WWE model, I don't think him turning can garner anymore heat overall than he gets now. Curious who the last true heel in WWE was...the guy people "pay to see lose".
  7. I was just saying this exact thing last night. No way can they book him as a bigger heel than he is now. He gets huge heel heat, everyone except kids hate him, he cashes in on the kids with merch sales, tons of fans claim they are going to quit watching but they keep tuning in to see him lose, getting pissed when he keeps on winning and dominating...and he goes right along trolling, mocking the haters and then delivering the biggest FU in that ESPN interview. Agreed 100%.

  16. Good debate and fair criticism. I agree that Teddy was a bit too high and I think you can tell on the show by my lack of defense or much justification. I was definitely trying to come up with good reasons while we were talking. Agreed with Chad on Bruno...he did much more than just the Harvey stuff. And even as Harvey he did a great job with some really terrible acts. Longevity also plays a role there. I actually agree on Ellering, but that is a Scott Special, so take that up with him. The Paul Jones comment was reference to his place in your commercial that we always play and a sarcastic comment to your hatred of him! Hump was a glaring oversight...should have been there. FWIW, my personal Top 5 would have been: 1) Bobby Heenan 2) Jim Cornette 3) Paul E. 4) Jimmy Hart 5) JJ Dillon And fuck Frenchy Martin.

  19. I think a lot of people grew up either watching in the early 90s or were fans during Attitude. During both time periods he was pretty prominent and well known and he stood out with his look, so I guess people have fond memories? I bet most remember him from the early 90s and he brought back childhood memories. Seemed like a really nice guy...haven't seen anything bad or negative about him at all. Sad that he couldn't get his weight under control, but I am sure losing his wife a few years ago really took a toll on the poor guy.
  20. Is that the MWF show? He is a big part of their promotion. Went to a show a couple years back when they made him President. We went to Kowloon's after and ran into him, very nice guy...very laid back. Sad to see him pass. Rest in Peace, Paul!
  21. Trying to remember Mania expectations vs. delivery of years past. Any thoughts on this? I remember WM26 was really hyped...the build was awesome and a lot of people were amped to see it and then it was just OK, a little flat. Have there been any that had low expectations heading in and then over delivered? I loved WM23, don't really remember the feeling heading in...
  22. In this new episode of the PTB Podcast Vintage Vault, Kevin Kelly returns to join Scott & Justin to talk about the WWF in the second half of 1998. 23. Sheamus seems to be linked to a few guys. FWIW, Meltzer noted on the LAW this week that he was told Sheamus and Mark Henry are set for Mania and that it is being advertised over in the UK.
  24. Oh yeah, they aren't absolved...but I think most fans realized that it was nonsense. Plus Billionaire Ted was three years earlier and came off as really lame, which is why so many people bought into WCW's attacks...they seemed smarter and cooler. By 1999, WWF was mostly focused on themselves...I just think the played out "they are taped, we are live" crap wasn't as effective because Raw was must watch at the time...nobody cared that it was taped.
  25. Thanks Parv! I love Scott, but I do think he goes a bit too party line on non-WWE stuff. That is why I am there to call his ass out. I really think WCW could have survived this night if they followed up properly. The Tony thing has grown in legend thanks to WWE, but I think it serves more as a symbol of their hubris and how out-of-touch they were by 1999. That shit worked when WWF was stale and played out and WCW was cool. By early 1999, people liked WWF and Mankind and everything going on, so trashing them like that didn't seem as witty or innovative anymore.
