IIRC, Jarrett was messed up by Snuka, then Snuka motioned for Benoit to do his thing anyway and that made things worse.

On the MMA Hour, Dave brushed off talk of getting a Pulitzer, saying he writes too much quantity to do super-high-level quality. Clearly he's self-aware about his writing.
-
A million times this. He was a floundering midcarder in both companies, was never over, and then from late '99 on he's shoved down our throats. Ditto in TNA.

The Jim Ross Is A Grouchy Hateful Vile Human Being thread
Ditch replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
Except that Oklahoma mostly mocked his Bell's Palsy and the BBQ thing that most of the public didn't know about, rather than having him be a pretend-babyface manipulator. -
Because it was so bizarre in a car wreck way, this segment got the highest rating of the show by a full point. Russo used that to justify everything else going forward, ie. traditional/logical booking and wrestling matches don't get the same ratings as garbage so let's do garbage. Argh.
-
Doing that sort of thing *on a PPV*, with zero follow-through after, is precisely the sort of baffling choice only Russo could make.

Fujiwara was a kickboxer, or at least trained as one. Which makes his willingness to be a punching bag against Maeda, Takada et al. especially generous.

I would be shocked if he isn't one of that lucky handful of people that only need 4 hours of sleep a night.

And instead we got Flair/Savage and Hogan/Sid, both of which are 'big' but neither of which were set up before Rumble AND neither of which would have been considered a fraction the dream match that Hogan/Flair was. I realize that part of the reason why Hogan/Flair wasn't done at Mania was the disappointing house show gates, but IMO they didn't do nearly enough tease/build to it on TV before doing it at house shows. That WWF got so little out of Hogan/Flair is almost as bad as the Invasion botch.

[1991-12-08-NJPW] Hiroshi Hase vs Tiger Jeet Singh (Island Death)

Inoki and Masa Saito did one in '87 or so and I guess this was an attempt to "recapture the magic".- 12 replies

I think MVC turned a corner with this match and were much more reliable in the following year and a half. This is my favorite from their run.

Match worth adding to a '91 errata set: Hansen & Spivey vs Jumbo & Taue from 12/6. Fast pace, tremendous heat, and it's now available in full.
-
Singles matches inherently get more talk and higher ratings from most sources. I lean towards tags myself and that frustrates me. Also, looking at my AJ '90s ratings, I put this at #45 for the decade and #5 for 1991. So it's definitely up there.

All Japan from '90-'92, other than the really historic matches, didn't get nearly the attention that '93-and-on received for a long while. Also, a match like this doesn't quite stand out relative to other matches the promotion had in the decade. Good chance it's top 100, top 50 is maybe a reach, top 20 is pretty much out of the question... so there's not much reason for it to get random mentions when people talk about top matches for the promotion or one of the wrestlers. All that said it's REALLY GOOD.

Hansen just BROUGHT IT so often when teaming with Spivey from 90-91. Like how Doc started bringing it when he stopped teaming with Gordy.

No, WWE did not fund Linda's campaigns directly. Though there is a question of whether they would have taken out so much money without the plan to tilt at the electoral windmill.
-
What does dividends have to do with a network? Either a given plan for the network would be profitable or it wouldn't. Is lack of funding the hang-up?
-
Latest on the network is that it will come in... 2015. I almost typed '2105'; I have a feeling that would be more accurate.
-
edit: wrong thread, sorry
-
It's entirely possible to have great booking ideas but lack the promotional structure and talent to make it profitable/big.

Kharma is vastly easier to fit into the WWE product than Mistico or Sakuraba. I don't know how there's even a comparison. At the very least there was real upside to her. Besides which, can she even be considered a flop on the merits given how little she was on TV before having to leave?
-
A creative failure is not a talent development failure. How does creative failure and/or bad life events lead to saying Kharma was a bad signing? Big difference between her and Mistico, who wasn't adept at US style wrestling, didn't speak the language, and almost certainly has a much bigger contract.

[1991-10-24-AJPW-October Giant Series] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Toshiaki Kawada
Ditch replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
'Great in a different way' is an excellent phrase for this. It might lack some of the 'bigness' of the absolute top-tier of AJ bouts, but it's an excellent match in all other aspects. Not one of the MOTDC super-classics that the promition turned out, but just one tier beneath those.- 12 replies
