[1990-WWF] "So Close To The Real Thing, It's Like Being In The Ring!"
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
'WWF figures, so close to the real thing, it's like being in the ring!' Jesse Ventura advertises WWF toy figures and a WWF toy ring with a little help from Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Brutus Beefcake, Smash and Jake Roberts.- 25 replies

We join the Rumble just as participant number 25 is about to make their entrance, and it's Hulk Hogan to a pretty loud pop. He eliminates Jimmy Snuka almost immediately, although sadly not by posing and flexing his muscles, but by a weak looking clothesline. Haku is next to go as he propels himself backwards and over the top rope to the floor after a big boot to the face from the Hulkster. The Ultimate Warrior eliminates Tito Santana and we’re down to four. Shawn Michaels is entrant 26 but he doesn’t last long. Hogan gets rid of the Honky Tonk Man, Warrior dumps Michaels after a whopping 12 seconds and then immediately tosses out Rick Martel leaving just two men in the ring and the confrontation we’d been promised. The crowd are pumped for this! A couple of shoulder blocks and neither man budges. A criss cross, a double clothesline and both go down. It looks like that’s it as far as the confrontation goes as both sell the effects of the clothesline until the next man enters, who is the Barbarian. He goes to work on them both and Rick Rude makes a premature appearance as entrant 28. Rude and the Barbarian have Hogan teetering on elimination, but instead of helping them, the Warrior attacks Rude. It’s a different story when the two of them have Warrior on the verge of elimination, as Hogan hits a lame double clothesline on them both, but the momentum sends the Warrior over the top rope and to the floor. Warrior then gets back in the ring, clotheslines Rude, clotheslines the Barbarian and sprints to the back! Only the Warrior! Hercules is the penultimate entrant, followed by Mr Perfect two minutes later. Hercules eliminates the Barbarian and then Rude gets rid of Hercules not long after. We’re down to the final three and Rude and Perfect start double teaming the Hulkster. A miscommunication sees Hogan duck out the way and Rude nail Perfect who takes a fall backward through the middle rope and on to the apron. Hogan whips Rude into the ropes, but as Perfect grabs the tope rope to help him back to his feet and Rude goes careering over it to the floor. It’s down to two and with Perfect in the ascendancy he decides to hit the ‘perfect plex’ (in an even more bizarre moment than when he used it in a post-match attack on Brutus Beefcake earlier in the card). It has zero effect bar leading to Hogan ‘Hulking up’, and shortly after tossing Perfect over and out to become this year’s winner. I thought that this was a hot closing stretch to the Rumble. Whilst the action wasn’t much (or even that impressive) we got the Hogan/Warrior confrontation that we’d been nigh on promised, and Hogan helping to eliminate him will surely be the catalyst for the Wrestlemania VI main event. Rude, Perfect and Barbarian all worked hard, although it’s a shame that they didn’t switch the positioning of Michaels and Hercules around and have Herc dumped after 12 seconds (although with Hercules being in so late may explain why he got the promo time in that final Royal Rumble report on 1/20). Guessing no-one is seeing Michaels as anything but a tag wrestler at this point. Some great bumping from Rude and his elimination was very nicely done. I had forgotten as well that all the managers were allowed at ringside for the Rumble back then.

Bobby Heenan, Rick Rude, Haku and Andre the Giant are backstage for an interview with Sean Mooney. That no good Mooney is stirring up trouble in the family! Mooney says that it is every man for himself in the Royal Rumble, but Heenan corrects him and says that it's every 'family' for himself. When he says that it could come down to Rick Rude and Haku as the last two men, Rude says that if that's the case, he'll do whatever it takes to win. Heenan and Haku aren't happy on hearing this, the family starts arguing amongst themselves and as Andre tries to say something, Heenan waves them all away (presumably to try and placate things away from the camera). Funny little segment.

[1990-01-21-WWF-Royal Rumble] Brutus Beefcake vs The Genius
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
The Genius escapes Beefcake's first sleeper attempt with some elbows to the mid-section. He shoots The Genius into the ropes, but he crashes into Earl Hebner who takes an awkward looking fall backwards through the ropes to the floor. The two of them continue to wrestle and it's not long before the Barber again has him locked in the sleeper. This time The Genius goes out, but no referee. For some reason instead of trying to revive the referee or drag him back into the ring, Beefcake goes and gets his scissors. The Barber starts cutting off some of his hair at which point Mr Perfect runs out and attacks Beefcake (including using the Perfect Plex???). Hebner finally comes round and the bell rings. Perfect grabs a chair from ringside and nails Beefcake in the ribs with it. A bunch of referees (including a young Shane McMahon) come out and usher Perfect and The Genius to the back, whist The Fink announces the match is a double disqualification. This was just weird. I don't know if Perfect was late on he run in or what (Beefcake's positioning with his back to the aisle would give the idea that he might have been), but I have no idea why they would do the ref bump and have Beefcake put The Genius to sleep if someone wasn't at least going to try to stop him cutting his hair? A double disqualification finish? Surely Poffo didn't refuse to do the job? Having re-watched this to double check, Hebner never actually sees Beefcake doing anything worthy of getting disqualified, he comes round as Perfect and The Genius are double teaming him. It does build the eventual Beefcake vs Perfect match for Wrestlemania, but as others have said, this whole scenario could've worked without the ref bump and just have Perfect attacking Beefcake post match as he is administering the hair cut. Strange.- 18 replies

[1990-01-21-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Ultimate Warrior
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
If there was any sort of doubt after the Hulk Hogan interview on the Brother Love show, then it's clear after this that there is going to be some sort of confrontation between Hogan and the Warrior at the Royal Rumble. He didn't make much sense but talks about 28 mortal men, and the 29th man, Hulk Hogan, having a force built around him like no others that walk in the World Wrestling Federation.- 15 replies

[1990-01-20-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler / Interview: Junkyard Dog
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
We first get an interview from the JYD taped at the Dallas Sportatorium. He's got the opportunity to come to Memphis, TN, the home of Elvis P. Presley! Every dog needs a bone to chew on and he's coming to Memphis to find himself a bone, and that bone is the World Heavyweight title belt. Back to Jerry Lawler who is still outside somewhere. He knows that Dave Brown is upset because he's got this video tape but he better not think that he's going to control things, he doesn't run the show round here and can be replaced. The people are already starting to tape the programme to sell to insomniacs as a cure! Next week he'll be back in the studio to put a little more life into the show, but he has an important phone call he's waiting on and needs the reception to be nice and clear. While he's waiting he wants to talk about the Junkyard Dog. He's going to crush him in the middle of the ring, just like those monster trucks crush those regular cars, and then he'll then be able to live up to the name Junk Yard Dog. The dog part is right, because the last time he saw something that looked like him he threw it a bone! He's going to be throwing him more than a bone though. He's going to be throwing him some lefts, some rights, and he'll be feeding them to him all afternoon until he gets down on his hand and knees, like he made his brother King Cobra do, and admit that Jerry Lawler is the one and only true World Heavyweight champion! A couple of good promos from the both building their upcoming match, although more racism again from Lawler. First of all by referring to 'your kind' when talking about the Junkyard Dog, and then saying that he should be shining his shoes.- 14 replies

Lawler is outside somewhere on his oversized mobile phone again. Apparently Dave Brown is going to air a video tape that shows the Junkyard Dog pinning him. The King claims that the JYD has never pinned him and the tape he's talking about, which might show some sort of interaction between he and the Dog, is now in his hands, as he went to the Production Office before the show went on the air and found the tape. As it's now in his possession, there'll be no tape of him and the Junkyard Dog on TV today.

[1990-01-20-WWF-Superstars] Jake Roberts and Ted DiBiase
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
The end of a Jake squash and he's about to put the snake on the jobber when Ted Dibiase and Virgil come out to ringside. Dibiase wants Virgil to go and retrieve his Million Dollar Belt from inside the bag with Damian, but Virgil isn't too keen on the idea. Dibiase slaps him, waves some dollar bills in his face and Virgil cautiously gets in the ring. Jake teases him with the bag before emptying it. When Virgil sees the snake he takes a tumble backwards through the ropes to the floor and sprints to the back with Dibiase remonstrating for him to come back and get his belt, whilst Roberts holds both the belt and Damian aloft. Nice fall from Virgil here.- 16 replies

[1990-01-20-WWF-Superstars] Royal Rumble Report w/Gene Okerlund
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
As a kid I used to really enjoy these reports, the way that they would slowly release a handful of name each week in the lead up and you would maybe get the odd 'outsider' involved too. Mean Gene runs down the full 30 names of this years entrants and we get brief interviews from Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, Hercules, Mr Perfect, Honky Tonky Man, the Colossal Connection with Bobby Heenan and the Ultimate Warrior. Not sure what Herc has done in order to be granted some interview time here?- 16 replies

Brother Love hopes that the Hulkster draws number one at the Royal Rumble so that he has 29 other men breathing down his neck. The Hulkster also hopes that he gets number one because Hulkamania is stronger than it's ever been! Hmmn, not too sure he really does want to draw number one! He's the lone survivor, he survived the No Holds Barred cage match, and with the Royal Rumble coming up he'll prove that Hulkamania can beat any man, beast or 29 other contenders! Of all the men out there there's one guy that's possibly going to last a while, but when he gets him in the middle of the ring it will be the 'ultimate' victory for Hulk Hogan. Love interjects and thinks that Mr Perfect will be his biggest challenger, but Hogan says it will just be a 'perfect' victory for him. Hogan talks some gibberish and nonsense along the way (he thinks just by flexing his muscles will cause some of his opponents to eliminate themselves from the Rumble!), but they nigh on guarantee some sort of confrontation with the Warrior at the Rumble. The interview also pretty much guarantees that there are only three men in with a chance of winning the Rumble: Hogan, Warrior or Perfect.

There have been some dodgy fashion statements already in this set and now we have Cactus in his denim jacket with the sleeves cut off! He feels good because he is in the NWA and he's got his priorities in order. Funk wonder what those are and Cactus responds that a lot of people come into wrestling with their priorities cloudy, but he has no room in his life for fancy cars or women, he'd rather hurt a man than love a woman and that's why he's in the NWA. When Funk asks him about money he says that it isn't really that important to him, leading Funk to think that he might be just the person to be foreman at the Double Cross Ranch! He says how Cactus has been having trouble with his partners and hasn't yet found one that is compatible with him. Cactus says that when he came to the NWA he came with a reputation, but was given a selection of partners that couldn't shine his shoes. He's a trusting guy, so when they told him they were good he believed them, but that wasn't the case. If you don't tell Cactus Jack the truth, you end up with the consequences! Cactus came across pretty nervous here and appeared to be looking at the wrong camera half the time. I enjoyed the interaction between Funk and Cactus, although you could sense that the Funker was walking him through the interview. The second time that a Funk's Grill segment has just ended abruptly mind.

There had been some doubt as to whether the Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania would be carried by Viewers Choice, however the fans of the WWF called their local cable systems, demanded they carried it and they listened! Thus proving that in this great country of ours, your voice does make a difference! Gene is such a carny.

[1990-01-13-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Woman Wants Flair
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
It's an episode of the 'Louisville Slugger' and Cornette, being the investigative journalist that he is, has said that he wants to get to the bottom of something, but to do that they said he has to have the World Heavyweight champion, Ric Flair, as his guest. Cornette wonders if Flair pulled some strings and called in a few favours so that his friend, Sting, could get the first title shot on 2/25, as opposed to someone like Lex Luger who would go for his eyes and go for his throat! Flair says that the Board of Directors put Sting in that position, not him, and it was because Sting won the Iron Man tournament at Starcade and beat him along the way. He's one of the most awesome athletes in the sport and he deserves a shot at the World title, just like Lex Luger and a whole host of other great athletes in the NWA. They are then joined by Woman and Nitron and the Naitch seems a little smitten with her. She says that she can help him in his match with Sting and can help him do a lot of other things...professionally. He tells her that the Horseman always separate business from pleasure, and if they let her in the door they would all have a hard time concentrating. He declines her offer but does compliment her on his way out leading you to believe that this isn't quite over just yet. Woman tells Cornette that in 1990 she plans on ruling the wrestling world, and to rule the wrestling world you have to own the Horseman. Cornette then tries to sell her some stock in Cornette Enterprises, but the look on her face says it all! Nice little segment and it does come across that they had some pretty big plans for Woman in 1990, shame those plans never came to fruition. -
[1990-01-13-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler, Dirty White Boy and Soul Taker
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Lawler is on an oversized mobile phone allegedly talking to Donald Trump! He's won back his USWA World Heavyweight title but isn't impressed that they're 15 minutes into the show and it's only now being mentioned; it should have been the headline story! The phone rings again and it's Art Modell on the other end, and when it rings for a third time you can see Dave getting more and more frustrated as the show continues to be interrupted. Dave answers it for the King this third time and it's Christie Brinkley on the other end. It sounds like she's hitting on him, but he can't meet her as he's already promised to go to the Browns game with Art Modell! They're finally able to continue with the show and Lawler says how people have been saying he should give King Cobra a rematch. He's not going to give him one as he had to practically get on his hands and knees to beg for one himself and Cobra hasn't done that yet. Lawler then calls out the Soultaker and the Dirty White Boy (along with the DIrty White Girl) as he will be partnering them in a six man tag team match against Dutch Mantel (he wanted to give him a great present that he needed for Christmas but couldn't wrap up a bath tub!), Chris Champion and 'that steroid freak' Steve Austin ('who weighed 47lbs before he got on steroids'!). He warns Austin that he's hanging around with a bunch of turkeys and there is no future in that, while the White Boy tells Champion that he belongs to him after putting his lips on the Dirty White Girl. So we've had Lawler with racist jokes and now he's moving on to steroids! This version of Jerry Lawler should be lots of fun! Dirty White Boy with his back to the camera was pretty infuriating but Lawler was gold here. Special props to Dave Brown for being so understated, but at the same time adding so much to the segment.- 19 replies

[1990-01-13-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler Loves Wrestling Fans
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Lawler walks around ringside and starts insulting a young fan who is heckling him. 'This kid had such a pretty chin he decided he'd add three more of them!', followed by 'this kid, last year he was the poster child for birth control!'. Funny stuff and this all feels so fresh as opposed to the tired, repetitive King who would later go on to commentate in the WWE.- 19 replies

There's an awful lot of hair out there with Dutch, Champion and Austin! Lawler (who is co-host at the moment) and Mantel have a great little back and forth after the King says 'scentless' instead of 'senseless'. It's not long before King Cobra is out to join them and he's again got Eddie Marlin with him (presumably to walk him through the segment like last time!). Cobra offers Austin $1,000 to step aside from this match and to let him take his place, although Lawler says that Cobra has never seen $1,000 and doubts he has it! Austin says that he could do with the money and Cobra takes his place in the six man tag match. Lawler isn't happy that Eddie Marlin is allowing this to happen and thinks It's a stitch up. Whilst still not the best, Cobra does a much better job on the mic here with his promo than the previous interview where The King was trying to get him to accept the 'no DQ' match.

[1990-01-13-USWA-Memphis TV] Bill Dundee and Billy Joe Travis
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
A clip of a Bill Dundee vs Billy Joe Travis match from the Mid-South Coliseum, and a shoulder block between the two sees Dundee take a tumble backwards and into Jerry Calhoun who gets knocked down. Travis gets his guitar and clobbers it over Dundee's head, with Calhoun then coming round to count the fall. Unfortunately, due to the camera angle the guitar shot is completely missed and we just see the back of Travis instead. In the studio and Dundee is out for an interview and he has the broken guitar with him. He says that what happened was his own fault as he knew that Travis had the guitar out there with him, and he should have gone and got it himself and beaten Travis over the head with it first. He didn't want to do that as he wanted to wrestle him instead and defeat him like that. He's not going to cry about it as this week they've got a 'guitar on a pole' match. He's never lost a pole match in his life, whether there's a belt, kendo stick, coal miners glove or anything, it doesn't matter as he ends up getting it and he ends up winning. Come Monday night when he climbs that pole and gets that guitar he's going to bash it over BIlly Joe Travis' head, and when he's done that, he's going to do it again! We go to a video interview from Travis who appears to be wearing a cheap imitation Ric Flair robe. He has another guitar with him and also claims to have burned the jump suit that he stole from Dundee! He says that the outcome to this 'guitar on a pole' match wont be any different to what happened last time, and Bill Dundee is going to get the guitar clocked over his head! Back in the studio and Dundee says that Travis looks exactly like what he is, a big woman in all those feathers! He then reiterates that he's going to get bashed over the head on Monday night. Finally we get a Billy Joe Travis music video set to 'Jailhouse Rock'. This is fantastic with Travis in his yellow jump suit doing knock off Elvis Presley moves and clocking people over the head with his guitar. He even treats us to a bit of Love Me Tender at one point too! Excellent segments to hype the 'Guitar on a Pole' match. The Dundee interview is great and the Travis music video needs to be seen.- 21 replies

[1990-01-12-NWA-Power Hour] Funk's Grill: Kevin Sullivan
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
So we can add 'rapper' to the many talents of Terry Funk after the opening of this segment! Norman is apparently a favourite of the Funker's. He doesn't approve to some of the things that have been happening to him of late, so has asked Kevin Sullivan to be his guest today. Sullivan turns up and is in a suit!!! He wonders whether Funk has taken Norman under his wing because he is a nitwit and it reminds him of his brother Dory? Sullivan says that he idolizes Funk as he was the most violent wrestler of their era and he's done a lot of things he would be proud to do himself. Funk says that he has, but he's never kicked a dog, beaten a child, taken advantage or destroyed property of a simple person like Sullivan has, before cutting a halt to things. Interesting to see the two of them have a calm exchange of words, but bar the digs at Dory I didn't care for this.- 16 replies

[1990-01-07-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
The Queen is looking resplendent in her lovely gold dress! There is no-one more suited to the Royal Rumble than royalty, Savage tells us, and the likes of the Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper and even Andre the Giant will fall to the Macho King! Sherri warns Sapphire not to stick her nose in her business when they are both on the Brother Love show at the Rumble. -
[1990-01-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and King Cobra
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Jerry Lawler wants to tell us all about the history of King Cobra. It took him a long time, took a lot of hunting and a lot of researching, but he finally came up with the true background of this mysterious Cobra. He apparently tried to steal the name 'King' from Lawler himself and when he asked him what his real name was he refused to tell him. Well he should have, because that would have saved him the embarrassment of Lawler going out and finding what his real name is. It took some serious research and he traced his family all the way back to the baboons! He then tells a long winded tale about finding Cobra's parents renting out the basement of a Mexican woman's outhouse. Apparently Cobra's father first got put in jail for refusing to fight in the Korean war, the reason being that he's had gonorrhoea, had diarrhoea and if Korea was anything like those wanted nothing to do with it! Dave Brown isn't buying it, but the King claims it's true. He then says that he spoke to Cobra's mother and asked her what his real name was. She said he's got three sisters: Emerald, Ruby and Pearl, then he came along and we named him Onyx, because he was Onyxpected! Lawler is in fits at his own jokes and again claims that what he is saying is gospel. He tells Cobra that he was only saved in their last match because Eddie Marlin sent another referee out and disqualified him. Dave Brown interjects and says it was because of that piledriver he used, but Lawler tells him if a man is prepared to step in the ring with him, he better be prepared to take anything he can dish out. This week he wants a no DQ match against Cobra with no time limit and no stopping the match. At this point Eddie Marlin comes out and says just because he wants it to be a no DQ match, doesn't mean that it's going to happen. The match is already signed, it's a straight wrestling match and there's no reason to change it. Lawler continues to argue for a no DQ match, but Marlin tells him that he doesn't have the pull here like he did in the CWA and as King Cobra is the World Heavyweight champion, it would be more reasonable to listen to what the champion wants, not the challenger. Cobra finally comes out and despite Lawler's best efforts to manipulate him into accepting a no DQ match, he doesn't have any luck and the original match stands. Lawler is all kinds of awesome here. The tale about finding Cobra's parents does drag, but the pay off is more than worth it. Cobra is a dreadful promo and I have a hunch he's not up to much in the ring either. It's hard to understand him and he's not helped by talking when Dave Brown doesn't even have the mic on him! Fortunately both Lawler and Marlin (who is great here) are on hand to walk him through the segment. I was expecting Lawler to talk his way into the no DQ match so was surprised that wasn't the pay off (although both Marlin and Cobra give plausible reasons why they shouldn't agree to his wishes). As tremendous as this was, if it doesn't lead to a no DQ match the week after, I can't get the feeling out of my head that this was actually a pointless segment.- 20 replies

[1990-01-06-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Interview: Four Horsemen
GSR replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Jim Ross is with Ole and Flair and says that the Horsemen have never been stronger since the inception of the group. Flair says how they've just picked up 6'3'', 260lb of the most charismatic, quality athlete in the world, when they are joined by Arn and Sting (who look like they've just had a match). Sting is excited to be a Horseman, considers it an honour and considers it an honour to hear Ric Flair giving him all those nice comments. Arn says how if all these people could have told them one year ago that he'd be stood next to Sting in a complimentary manner, their mouths would have fallen to the floor gaping open. Come Clash of the Champions when they get Buzz Sawyer, Great Muta and Dragon Master in a cage, life as they know it is over. Just like the interview where they invite Sting to join the Horseman, Arn is on another level and the standout promo again. -
Didn't see a thread for the latest episode (52) so will post this here. First time I've listened to the Top Ten in quite a while. It wasn't 'as' bad as it used to be, although I think this may be down to there being a new host and almost as soon as Brian had revealed where someone had placed, Travis and he started to chat about something else (usually Travis' fandom and growing up watching wrestling which I enjoyed). I actually found 'the Impressionist' really funny, although the stuttering Tommy Rich segment was god awful. The less said about Brian playing the synthesizer for the Black Scorpion and even saying he's going to put some 'songs' out there, the better. Hated the fantasy booking and that is even worse than what I remember. Looking forward to the Adrian Street interview as the one he did with Feinstein was really good (despite the fact that Feinstein had clearly done minimal research for it).

Baldy Apter presents the PWI Editor's Award to Gordon Solie, Most Improved Wrestler to Scott Steiner and Wrestler of the Decade to Ric Flair. Scott says he'll be cherishing his award for a lifetime, whilst Ric claims next to the World title, this is the most prestigious award in the sport. I swear I saw both of their noses growing.
-
Flair says that the Horsemen are inviting Sting to become the Fourth Horseman. Ole says how a lot of thought went into this, but there was no doubt in their mind of all the people in wrestling, Sting was the guy they wanted. Arn talks about how when the Four Horsemen were formed all those years ago, no-one had any idea of the magnitude it would have on the sport. It's not just four guys, it's family, it's always been family, and when you look to someone to include in your family, they've got to have the qualifications. Being a Horseman is not something you put on in the morning and take off at night, it's a state of mind, it's excelling to the best of your ability, it's four individuals thinking singularly and acting collectively. With Sting you've got an excitement level never before seen in this sport and they're glad to have him. Three of the all time best talkers and Arn is the best of the bunch here.

As others have said, Woman looks hot! Norman likes her and has been working on a picture for her. He hopes she likes it, because if she does, maybe she'll like him too? Norman reveals a painting that looks like it's been done by my six year old niece. Woman isn't impressed, throws the painting on the floor and slaps him. The slap riles Norman but before he can get at Woman, Nitron gets in between the two of them. Clearly he looks far more imposing than he is, as one shot from Norman is all it takes to drop him. Kevin Sullivan runs out to attack Norman and hits him over the head with the painting before rubbing his face in it. The three of them leave whilst Norman seemingly has paint on his face to represent blood. Ending with the 'blood/paint' was hokey as hell.
