Loss
Talk about it here.
Loss
The finish of their Mid South Coliseum. We cut in just a few seconds before a ref bump and Lawler throws fire in Savage's face! Savage comes back with a chain in his tights to pin Lawler and take the Unified title. Jarrett comes in and shows the chain to the ref and the decision gets reversed, so Savage rightfully tries to take out his frustration on Jarrett. Jarrett and Lawler then doubleteam Savage. Yeah, Savage responds to FIRE with a chain, then gets doubleteamed, and he's the heel. Weird.
Kevin Ridge
I thought Savage avoided the fireball as he seemed to know it was coming and dives out of the way at the last second. Would also explain how he was able to recover so fast and get the pinfall on Lawler.
PeteF3
Macklin is in full Lance Russell Mode here, to the point where I literally thought old Lance had returned. I agree that it looks like Savage avoided the fire--he catches Lawler with a chain when Jerry tries it again, and gets an apparent three-count. But he makes the mistake of sticking the chain in his armpit, and Jeff Jarrett lifts his hand to reveal the chain dropping to the mat. Frank Morrell reverses the decision and Jarrett and Lawler take Savage out. Why yes, I could go for Savage vs. Jarrett right now.
garretta
Savage better have avoided the fire; otherwise, that was one of the worst no-sells I've ever seen in my life, and I wouldn't have let him back in Memphis if I was Lawler. (For the record, I couldn't tell if he avoided it or not, and of course Corey was no help whatsoever.) It seems like they may be preparing the Memphis fans for Double J's WWF debut, which if I read the match listings right comes later this month. What better way than to give him a program, however brief it may be, with an established WWF name like Savage? At least Lawler got to throw the fire, even if it didn't mean much to the match. When he promises it as explicitly as he did for this match, he almost has to deliver, even if the rest of the match renders the spot meaningless. soup23
Savage avoids the fire and is able to utilize the chain to secure the pin. I thought he did a good job of hiding it in his armpit for a few minutes. Jarrett raises his hand exposing the chain and the decision is reversed and given to Lawler. The clips here looked good but not great like you might think a match between these two could be.
