Cornette explains the rules of the "Gang Fight" cage match at Thanksgiving Thunder.

It is fascinating just to watch Prichard and Del Ray in full constant movement playing off each other in between taunting the crowd. They don't just stand there as Cornette talks.

Cornette accuses the Bruise Brothers of "not knowing their place" and being "uppity." Using racialist terminology in reference to two white bikers billed from South Dakota with SS tattoos is bizarre yet strangely interesting.

Cornette is sick and tired of the Bruise Brothers sticking their noses in their business just like they did earlier. He’s upset about this match they have against them at the Thanksgiving Thunder and that the promotion has already made the arrangements and it didn’t matter if they wanted to be in it or not. This match is a ‘Gang Fight match’, it’s no time limit, no DQ, anything goes, you come as you are, can wear what you want and can bring any weapon you want to bring, short of a knife or gun! That’s what has disturbed him as you never know what the Bruise Brothers may have up their sleeves. The most important rule of a ‘Gang Fight match’ though is that pinfalls don’t count and the match is only over when your opponent is flat on his face, out of it and can’t get back to his feet before the count of ten. The only purpose that the referee serves is to make that count and award the winners the match. The Bruise Brothers have backed them into a corner, they’re intimidating, big, strong and crazy, but their advantage is that the Bruise Brothers are just like these low down, white trash, hillbillies in Jellico. They identify with them, are just like them and are never going to be any better than them because there are always guys like Jim Cornette and the Heavenly Bodies to stop them.

 

There really is no-one better than Cornette when it comes to these type of interviews and just explaining rules to the various stipulation matches. He can go long at times but he gets eveything over so clearly and concisely.

Corny and Lawler may be the two best people at explaining match stipulations ever in the history of the business. The sad thing is, few other people even try to do it, and that's not a modern thing or an old-school thing. Even master talkers from days gone by like Dusty and Flair were more interested in their own personal spiels than in explaining the kinds of matches they were going to be wrestling in. (The flip side of that is that there werem't a whole lot of intricate stipulation matches in the seventies and eighties, particularly for Flair as NWA World champion.)

 

I don't think for a second that Corny was intending to sound racist, especially against two white bikers. It's just that racist language and the language of class warfare are almost identical. That doesn't make it any less insulting in either circumstance.

 

It might make for better viewing if Dr. Tom and Jigolo Jimmy did ​just stand there motionless and let Corny carry segments like this entirely on his own. Speaking for myself, I wasn't paying a bit of attention to what they were doing with each other; all of my attention was on what Corny was saying.

I liked this better than the prior week's Bodies promo even though Cornette did have an uphill battle explaining everything going on with the rules of the match. Pritchard and Del Ray are a delight watching them stooge around as Corny talks.
