WWE - The Greatest Wrestling Stars of the '80s

It's out early at Wal-Mart and I wanna talk about it. Having bought it last night, I'm only three retrospectives into the set so far, but from what I've seen, this is a great buy. Fifteen stars are featured, with each one getting a fleshed-out retropsective dedicated to them. Because of the HoF ceremonies of the past two years, in addition to some of the bio pieces Confidential used to run, there's a lot of familiar ground covered in these. Still, they're packed with a great deal of vintage footage and bring back a string of memories for anyone who grew up watching this era.

The selling point of the set is, of course, the full-length bonus matches. By all accounts, the Savage/Steamboat WM III match is NOT on here, contrary to popular beliefs. As you know from the match reports, there's some great footage here. The Chi-Town Rumble match between Flair and Steamboat is here; a relief to those who feared owning yet another WWE DVD with their WrestleWar contest on it.

Of personal interest is that match, plus famous ones like Piper/Valentine (Starrcade '83) and Slaughter/Sheik (MSG 5/84), neither of which I've seen. The extras are going to be fun, since there's no short supply of TNT here, plus an episode of The Bobby Heenan Show!

The packaging is also beautiful. I love the cover art. Opening the set up, I actually felt as if I had something special in my possession. WWE's current product may be garbage, but I will continue to praise them for their consistent great work out of the home video department.

I think I'd actually like to see a second volume of this down the road and perhaps even a '90s edition of this. Great stuff, but as the usual with these types of releases, there's much more out there.

That's all of them. Seems a bit skimpy, but with everything else, this is still a nearly 10-hour DVD set, so for the price, I think it's a good buy.

Looks like I'm going to Wal*Mart after work tomorrow. Hopefully they'll have Lois and Clark season 1 (Yes, I am that big of a Superman mark)and Be Cool rather cheap as well.

Wal*Mart tends to have WWE DVDs for about $16 up here, this one may be closer to $20 because it's 3 discs.

I wish WWE would get their own dates right though. The Snuka-Backlund cage match was June 28, 1982. May 19, 1980 featured the Ken Patera-Bob Backlund "Texas Death" match. IIRC, Snuka was working Mid-Atlantic around that time.

I think the Slaughter-Sheik match is actually from April and not May, but at least that's in the right area.

At any rate, I preordered this at Amazon and can't wait for this one to arrive at my door.

It was $22 and change, GH.

SG, my Wal-Mart had Lois & Clark. You can forget about Be Cool being cheap. I saw it carrying a sticker price of $22. Fuck that noise. Even if the price were lower for the first week, I'd still pass. What a bloated, unnecessary sequel.

How much was Lois and Clark? The cheapest I've seen it is at Circuit City for $35.

I'm a mark for Rock movies, I may wait for Be Cool to hit the 2 for $20 list, though.

For those who haven't picked it up yet, the DVD is only $14.99 (before S&H) at FYE.com. Even after shipping, that's a hell of a deal.

They got the date wrong on the Bloodbath dvd as well.

Alright. I was just wondering because they seemed to leave a number of matches off the DVD that were originally advertised online as being on the DVD. For instance, this is the listing from Highspots:

Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage - WWF Intercontinental Title Match, WrestleMania III

Jerry Lawler vs. Kerry Von Erich - AWA World Title vs. WCCW Title, AWA SuperClash III

Sgt. Slaughter vs. Pat Patterson - Boot Camp Match

Greg Valentine vs. Roddy Piper - Dog Collar Match, Starrcade '83

Hulk Hogan & Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff - WrestleMania I

Jimmy Snuka vs. Don Muraco - Steel Cage Match, Madison Square Garden

Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes - NWA World Title Match, Great American Bash '85

Harley Race vs. Ric Flair - NWA World Title Cage Match, Starrcade '83

Sgt. Slaughter vs. Iron Sheik - Madison Square Garden

Greg Valentine vs. Tito Santana - IC Title Lumberjack Match, MSG

Ultimate Warrior vs. Bobby Heenan - Weasel Suit Match, MSG

Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes - NWA World Title, Million Dollar Challenge, Starrcade '84

Ole & Arn Anderson vs. Wahoo McDaniel & Billy Jack Haynes - National Tag Titles, Starrcade '85

Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat - NWA World Title, Chi-Town Rumble

Ric Flair vs. Jay Youngblood

Jimmy Snuka vs. Bob Backlund - WWF Title Cage Match, MSG

Bob Backlund vs. Iron Sheik - WWF Title, MSG

Paul Orndorff vs. Salvatore Ballamo - MSG

Iron Sheik vs. Bob Orton Jr. - WWF Title, MSG

Jimmy Snuka vs. Bob Orton Jr. - MSG

SG, I'm not really a fan of the series, so I didn't bother to check out how much it was going for.

Rob, most of the matches that weren't included are available on other WWE DVDs, so it's not really a big loss.
