ROH 07/16/05 Results

Recommended Posts

1. Nigel McGinness defeated Claudio Castignoli; said to be a fun match.

2. Austin Aries defeated El Generico after a Brainbuster/450 Splash. Said to be a good match with a lot of nearfalls.

3. Homicide won the four corner survival by pinning Dixie following a Cop Killa. After the match, the doctors and refs all came into the ring to help Dixie to the back. It appears he was legitimately injured.

**CM Punk came out and cut a promo, basically just putting himself over. James Gibson then came out to confront him, and Punk bloodied Gibson with a chain. Gibson was then helped to the back.

4. Ultimate Endurance results: The Embassy of Fast Eddie and Killer Kruel were eliminated first in the scramble match. Lacey's Angels then got eliminated in the Anything Goes match. Finally, the Carnage Crew got the pinfall on Dunn and Marcos after a spike piledriver off the ropes.

5. AJ Styles pinned Roderick Strong following a Styles Clash. Said to be an awesome match; I could hear an "ROH" chant in the background.

6. Samoa Joe pinned Jimmy Rave following a muscle buster to retain the ROH Pure Title. Joe used all three of his rope breaks fairly quickly. Rave was using a shoelace to choke Joe throughout the match, but it finally got taken away.

POSTMATCH: Jade Chung was about to turn on Prince Nana, when the lights went out and Matt Hardy appeared in the ring. He got a huge pop. The Embassy ran out of the ring.

7. Matt Hardy made Christopher Daniels tap out after 3 Twist of Fates and an interference from CM Punk

8. CM Punk defeated James Gibson to retain the ROH Title. Said to be a very good match.

After the match, Daniels attacked Punk and stole the title. He said that if Punk wants the title back, he will have to fight him for it. Daniels left, and the fans started throwing trash in the ring. Punk then jumped the rail and started chasing the fan who was doing this to end the show.

Looks like they have some really strong characters in Punk and Hardy, which makes it a shame that they aren't around for the long haul. Attendance was said to be in the 1000 range, and Hardy supposedly got scattered boos when they announced him earlier in the evening and got a really good reaction when he actually appeared in front of the crowd.

I guess people really are liking this Hardy angle. Good to know. Also shall be interesting to see if it'll just be Daniels vs. Punk, or triple threat Daniels vs. Punk vs. Hardy. Reason I throw in the triple threat, is so that Daniels wins by pinning Hardy or Hardy helps Daniels win, and then have Punk come along on RAW and "punk" out Hardy.

...yes, bad pun I know.

How did you come to this conclusion by reading those results? CM Punk has always been a great charcter in ROH but I wouldn't know that by looking at that results page. Are you going by prior knowledge?

I think Punk is going to be stuck in OVW for awhile so by the time he lands on RAW or SD!, this angle will be long forgotten.

The main event of the ROH show in Philly next week is going to be Daniels vs Punk for the title. I'm hoping Daniels wins, but I would think that Punk would be losing the title in Chicago. So he can leave ROH in his hometown.

Because 1000 is a huge crowd for ROH, because every title defense Punk has seems to be the one where everyone thinks he's finally going to lose and he doesn't, because the reaction to Matt Hardy was said to be positive.

I'm surprised the "smart" fans that ROH seems to attract haven't turned on the company for having such an obvious working relationship with WWE, the evil empire.

Hell, for that matter, I'm suprised that WWE has allowed what could possibly be a big angle develop outside of their sphere of influence.

CM Punk going to the WWE as an angle, but holding off and defending the ROH title as if every night is his last night in the company, could pay off huge for both companies.

- As was the case with the venue for the very successful 'Manhattan Mayhem' show, the Connecticut Sports Center was not fully equipped to handle the extremely large crowd present for Saturday's event. Aside from the lack of seating, which forced quite a few fans to spend the entire night standing, there were continuous complaints about the lack of air conditioning in the very hot and crowded venue.

- Steven Richards was in attendance and spoke with some fans during intermission.

- During the four-way, Dixie landed awkwardly on Homicide's Cop Killer and was helped to the back by a number of officials.

- There was some fear that Hardy might risk his overness with the crowd by going overboard in pushing his WWE storyline as a shoot. Hardy instead went the safe route by giving a rather low-key promo that pandered to the ROH crowd and helped sustain the unbelievable face reaction he got upon first appearing in the ring. It took a series of four superplexes and the assisted victory against Christopher Daniels, who was also extremely over, to cause some (not even close to a majority) of the crowd to turn.

- ROH announced a return to the venue for October; the tickets were not moving overwhelmingly fast, which confirms that the massive crowd had very much to do with Matt Hardy's debut.

This was from LOP.

Hardy played it totally right. He's obviously put a lot of thought into what he's doing. Kudos to him staying one step ahead of any problems thus far.

Yeah, but this is WWE we're talking about, since when to they care about if something's big for another company? That's the part that baffles me, since this is completely out of character for WWE to help another company out even if it helps them in the long run.

I think RoH needs to exile Punk and Hardy by the end of the month. This has a really good chance of completely blowing up in their faces. The people that watch RoH hate the WWF and you'll chase them away by working with the WWF too much.

Also the 1000 number is probably a work on RoH's part. Most of the live reports I read had it more in the 500-600 range.

There's only one report that said 500-600 and that was from a fan who clearly had an agenda. Everyone else has been saying 800+.

As for RoH fans hating WWE, that isn't really true at all.

ROH fans come off to me like less ignorant versions of ECW mutants, with the whole "every other company is subpar to ours" mentality. It's fine to be a fan of whatever you want but sometimes people who are marks for these small indy promotions lose perspective when it comes to who needs who for business.
