WWE spoiling outcomes of Title Changes

What is everyones opinion on this?

I dont know why they do it, I remember they did it a few years ago I think it was either Angle or Khali winning a World Title on smackdown and they gave it away on WWE.com before the match had even been televised.

One that really got my head scratching was 1984. I was tuning in last night watching WWF Championship Wrestling edition January 14th 1984 and after the first match Gene Okerlund says Hogan beat Sheik for the belt and we have more news on this later. Considering this aired a good 9 days before the MSG its a bit strange why they would do a announcement for this.

What I found even more baffling was they were promoting a 20 man battle Royal which they say is tonight which that would mean it would be 28th january. At first I thought maybe I watched a show with the wrong date on but I went on a info site and all the matches were listed there as a show that aired on the 14th so no idea why this happened.

I mean yeah we all know what happened but if your a fan who hadent seen the show it would be a bit of a disapointment they screwed up like that. They even had Hogan/Backlund in a tag team match and they never mentioned reference or showed Hogan with the belt then so why would they give the results away?

They would do it in recent times to get people to watch Smackdown, not sure why they would have done it in 1984 unless it was just a screw up of some sort.

It must have been. I even checked the history of wwe website to see if it was a mistake on my part watching the wrong disk but no all the matches from the 14th listed I had just watched. Seems very odd to promote a local card at a arena saying tonight when its obvious it isnt tonight its in 2 weeks time. If I remember right the battle royal show took place on the 28th.

Even the site says they recorded the tapings on the 3rd of January so no excuse really why they spoiled something so major in advance. Im sure there were some fans who thought the Battle Royal show was that same day it was advertised and they wouldnt have been happy going to the show and being told its not for a fortnight.

I remember them making a pretty big deal out of Edge cashing in his second MITB contract on The Undertaker back in 2007. It's hard to keep track of all Edge's title wins, but I'm fairly sure that's the one where they even had a scrolling message at the bottom of the screen during RAW (or perhaps ECW) that week - informing viewers that Edge had captured the World Heavyweight Championship at a SmackDown taping that night.

They also promoted Foley's first title win off the taped Raw on their site. I remember that pretty clearly.

Not saying you're wrong, but if this was true I don't see why Tony Schiavone gets so much heat for his infamous "announcing it on Nitro and losing all their viewers" debacle. Why would that have been such a big deal if it just said it on WWE's website anyway

I figure the website announcements are two fold. A) gets people tuning in, and B ) they know their taped shows are spoiled all over the internet, so might as well be proactive and get some additional pageviews

I'm confused on the Hogan thing. You're saying a show taped 1/3/84, that aired 1/14/84, spoiled the title change. Hogan won the title on 1/23/84. That doesn't add up. Are you saying they announced it before it even happened?

Yep pretty much. History of WWE says the Champ Wrestling taping took place on 1/3 and I watched the 1/14 show and they announced it on the show before the MSG show even took place. I checked the history website and the matches listed from the 14th were what I was watching so it wasent as if I watched the wrong episode.

Can you guess what happened on the 1/21 show? Yep Sheik comes out as the WWF Champion and they are advertising the MSG show of him defending the title.

If you want to call something odd heres another example.

Last night I was watching Championship Wrestling 2/11/84 and they are discussing Tito winning the title from Muraco during the bit where Okerlund is interviewing both and Albano goes crazy about how can it happen when the tape is missing. Considering this is a taped show probably taped a week or 2 previously to be exact 1/24/84 and that match didnt even happen till the actual 2/11 date but Tito wrestles on this show but he isnt wearing the IC belt and why? Because Vince & Gene are talking about tonights upcoming match between the two so technically it hadent happened yet.

During all this they are talking about the Hogan/Masked Superstar title match that is taking place in a few days time yet the week before they clearly discussed Orndorff/Hogan for MSG. Wouldnt it make more sense to advertise the MSG match for the following week than to just discuss something else? One week they talk about Superstar/Andre and the following week its Hogan/Superstar discussion. These shows were recorded from the New York area so no idea why they keep bouncing around with deff matches that havent even taken place yet when MSG didnt happen till 2/20.

Its a tad bit confusing.

History of WWE is generally accurate on dates, you watched the show and I didn't, I don't have any reason to doubt either of you. If true that is bizarre though. I can't imagine it being a mistake on WWE's part, but I also can't fathom them announcing Hogan beating Iron Sheik for the belt a week before the match actually took place, and this is the first time I've ever heard of it. I'd think if true this would be a bigger/more commonly known thing. Something about this ain't right.

Weren't the localized promos back in the day usually sent on a separate tape from the main show? I seem to remember reading that it was the job of the station to insert the correct promos when it came to that part of the show. If that is correct, it would seem that the local station may have plugged the wrong set of promos in.

That actually makes the most sense. Watts used to spend a full day shooting local promos and it was hell on the boys to keep track of what TV show aired in which market, so they knew what angle or feud to be talking about in the promo. So, it actually makes sense that someone in Vince's camp or the TV station's camp dropped the ball and either played or sent the wrong set of promos.

Would they get this wrong twice though?
