shoe
G1 Climax announcement. 20 men, Okada, AJ Styles, Hirooki Goto, Togi Makabe, Hiroyoshi Tenza, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Yuji Nagata, Satoshi Kojima, Tetsuya Naito, Katsuyori Shibata, Shinsuke Nakamura, Toru Yano, Tomohiro Ishii, Yujiro Takahashi, Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows, Bad Luck Fale, Michael Elgin, Kota Ibushi, Tomoaki Honma This is pretty much the same as last year. You add in Ibushi, and Elgin. Take out Archer, DBS, Shelton, Suzuki. I''m sure we'll still get a great G1 match wise. Still it's so samey and comes across stale. Of all the foreigners you get Elgin who didn't look good on the ROH/NJPW shows in June. Strong smoked him, and Cedric Alexander's match against Okada was better than all of Elgin's efforts. Or even putting Omega in it trying to help elevate him out of Jr contention. I'm not an Omega guy, but would prefer him to Elgin.
Zoo Enthusiast
Ugh, Elgin. I was enjoying his desperate quest and subsequent repeated failings to get booked in NJPW. Sad to see that come to an end. Everything else looks pretty standard. Is there something wrong with Suzuki that he isn't in?
tim
Smaller field with way more dates? How is this working? No Suzuki is a big disappointment, the last two years he was a big highlight.
Quentin Skinner
It makes sense that there is no Suzuki but him not being takes away from some possible matches I would love to see.

GOTNW
No one from Suzuki-gun is in the G1. It wasn't that hard to figure out.
Zoo Enthusiast
No one from Suzuki-gun is in the G1. It wasn't that hard to figure out. It is if you don't really follow NJPW much anymore aside from the G1 and the Dome show.
Mad Dog
Please, if there is a God don't have Elgin and Tenzan in the same block.
Tim Cooke
Elgin is such a terrible choice. He can't work short matches, he can't work 30 minute draws. It's a no-win situation for his opponents.
Mad Dog
It could have been worse and been Jax Dane.
tim
Eh, this is sort of the story of NJPW for the past year. This will probably end up producing plenty of very good matches and the shows will be fun to watch but there's nothing interesting or exciting about it at all. Nothing to really anticipate. Last year we basically got everything that was good about the previous year's G1 plus two big additional sources of interest in Styles and Honma. This year we get a major contributor SUBTRACTED from the field, a reliably solid guy removed in Davey Jr., and a guy who totally blows added (Elgin). Only thing of note in a positive way is Ibushi when he was out last year. Like all of NJPW for the past year with the exception of last year's G1 and WrestleKingdom it's very disappointing because NJPW has the resources to be a lot more interesting than it is. Really the Japanese WWE in a lot of ways.
