AWA show at the Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, March 15th , 1984

Can-Am Express & The Latin Lovers vs. Badd Company & the Cuban Commandos

Badd Company and the Commandos won when Gerry Morrow reversed a Tom Zenk cross body press into a power slam

Mothership Connection vs. Bob Sweetan & Rip Oliver

Mothership Connection won when Parsons hit the Rumper Stumper on Oliver

Samu vs. Manny Fernandez

Fernandez won when he got the Flying Burrito Forearm on Samu

AWA Southern Title match : Buddy Rose © vs. Mr. Olympia

Olympia won by DQ but did not win the title when he was attacked by the rest of the Playboy Club

AWA Tag Titles match : The Road Warriors © vs. One Man Gang & Jerry Blackwell

The Warriors were looking to get revenge for Kaissie’s Krew’s attack on their good friend Moose Cholak, who it was just announced had to retire due to his injuries at the hands of Crusher and Gang . A lengthy brawl ensued with all four men being busted open and the ref finally having to throw out the match with Hawk and Gang both slugged him for trying to separate the two teams.

Tito Santana & Greg Gagne vs. Ken Patera & Paul Orndorff

After a long back and forth match, an attempted double team by Patera went awry when Gagne ducked out of the way at the last moment and Patera hit Orndorff instead. Tito quickly hit the Mexican Hammer on Orndoff and got the crowd pleasing victory. Orndorff was clearly unhappy with Patera afterwards.

AWA World Title match : Hulk Hogan © vs. Masked Superstar

Hogan has been showing signs of the increasing damage done to him by the Sinister Six and has had a lot of difficulty getting a clean victory over the members of the villainous syndicate. It looked like he might finally get one when, after a particularly brutal bout, he just barely managed to duck the flying clothesline from Superstar and came back to hit the Axe Bomber on the masked man. No sooner had he knocked him down, though, than Ted Dibiase stormed the ring and started pummeling him with the loaded glove. Superstar then hit the Corkscrew Neckbreaker that clearly hurt Hogan’s already damaged neck. After the ref called for the DQ, the AWA officials were seen conferring about what to do about this situation.

Nice! Two cards in one day. I liked how this show built off of All Star Wrestling and how the feuds continued. Your heel stables are fun to follow but with Hogan in the Main Event, the fans usually get to leave with their favorite still being the champ.

As the other show, this one leads you right to the next one. Good work!

When writing my TV, I tend to start by seeing what the card will be for the weekend house show and then come up with TV matches that will set things up for that card, or otherwise further existing feuds. I actually moved up the Santana tag match ahead in the card because I didn't want to end with a string of heel beatdowns.

AWA All-Star Wrestling for March 22nd

The Assassins vs. The Latin Lovers

The Assassins were gearing up for their big cage match for the AWA World Tag titles in Milwaukee but the Latin Lovers were determined not to be overlooked, giving as good as they got in every exchange with the bigger team. They did their best to not be distracted by Col. Buck Robley attempting to interfere from ringside, but in the end it was a mistimed attempt at a back body drop with Vinnie Valentino ducking his head too soon led to Assassin # 1 catching Valentino with a nasty elbow smash to the back of the head that led to a win for the masked men.

AWA American Title match : Tito Santana © vs. Manny Fernandez

These two men are quite familiar with each other, having squared off numerous times with usually Santana coming out the victor. Fernandez , however, was incredibly aggressive and it was all the champion could do to keep control of the match. Tito was just barely able to duck out of the way of the Flying Burrito forearm at one point in the match, but later on missed his own attempt at the Mexican Hammer. The two fierce competitors were still slugging it out as the bell rang to signal a 15 minute time limit draw.

Samu vs. “Crusher” Jerry Blackwell

The big Crusher has just been rolling over the competition of late, including doing a lot of damage to Hulk Hogan in his recent title shot, and just seemed to overwhelm the always popular “Samoan Dynamite”. No matter what Samu tried to do on offence, he was unable to knock Blackwell down and his increasingly reckless attempts to get him off his feet led to Samu getting caught in mid-air and being crushed by a powerslam that got the pin for the Mountain From Stone Mountain.

AWA Southern Tag Titles match : The Cuban Commandos © vs. The Can-Am Express

The young team of the new Can-Am Express put in their best effort yet against the Commandos, keeping them off balance with their fast paced, high flying moves, and looking on a number of occasions like they would take the titles. It seemed like they just might pull it off as Tom Zenk went up top to hit a flying splash on Morrow but, while the ref was separating Lafon and Acevedo, a mysterious man appeared at ringside, knocked Zenk off the top to send him plummeting to the floor and then dashed back to the locker room. Zenk was unable to recover in time and the Commandos won by count out. It seems that the Cuban Commandos now have a sinister new ally watching their backs.

Greg Gagne vs. Ed Wiskowski

In this match between the surly enforcer of the Playboy Club and the long time AWA fan favorite, Wiskowski looked to be trying to take out his frustration for his earlier loss to Mr. Olympia on the second generation superstar. Gagne kept his head and gradually let the Polish Prince tire himself out until he was able to draw Wiskowski into trying to lariat him in the corner only to duck out of the way at the last moment. When Wiskowski staggered back, Gagne took him down with a dropkick and followed up with a second rope kneedrop before putting him in the Gagne Leglock. This was the cue for Wiskowski’s Playboy Club partners, Bob Sweetan and Rip Oliver, to come out but they found their way to the ring blocked by the Mothership Connection, Iceman Parsons and Master Gee. With no rescue forthcoming, Wiskowski had no choice but to give up the match.

Mr. Olympia vs. The Masked Superstar

Olympia has been fighting a war on two fronts of late, both helping out his good friend Hulk Hogan in his battles with the Sinister Six while dealing with his own issues with the Playboy Club at the same time, and it definitely seems to have taken a toll on the masked fan favorite. Masked Superstar came to the ring with his partner, Ted Dibiase, who proved to be a thorn in Olympia’s side throughout the match. Despite all of this, Olympia managed to stay competitive throughout the match and looked like he would get the win when he got the Sleeper hold on Superstar. It was at this point that Dibiase came in the ring and slugged Olympia with the loaded glove, leading to the DQ loss for Superstar. The two men proceeded to beat down Olympia until the AWA officials ran them off.

AWA show Night Of The Cage in the Mecca, Milwaukee, March 22nd

Elimination match : The Latin Lovers & The Can-Am Express vs. The Cuban Commandos & Badd Company

The Cuban Commandos were accompanied by the same man who interfered in their TV match. Both Cuban Commandos were the sole survivors when Phil Lafon (the last survivor of his team) came off the ropes but was tripped by the mystery man, leading to him staggering and getting hit with a DDT by Angel Acevedo.

Samu & “Wildman” Jack Armstrong vs. One Man Gang & “Crusher” Jerry Blackwell

Kaissie’s Krew won when Gang landed on Samu with the 747 Splash .

Greg Gagne & The Mothership Connection vs. Ed Wiskowski, Rip Oliver & Bob Sweetan

The Playboy Club won when “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan hit the Piledriver on Iceman Parsons

Tito Santana & The Garvin Brothers vs. Manny Fernandez, “The Tank” Mike Shaw & Super Destroyer

In a lengthy and chaotic brawl, Fernandez ducked the Hands Of Stone punch from Ron Garvin only to run right into the Mexican Hammer. Santana and the Garvins were triumphant but didn’t get long to savor their victory as they were immediately jumped by “Wild” Bill Irwin and Billy Jack Haynes. The Wild Bills are back and the entire Army beat down the fan favorites until the AWA officials cleared them from the ring.

AWA Southern Title Cage match : Buddy Rose © vs. Mr. Olympia

Olympia has been worn down by his dual wars with the Sinister Six and the Playboy Club, but really put it to the Southern Champ, battering and bouncing him around the cage. Buddy Rose showed why he is the Southern champ as he got out of a number of close calls, but it looked like it was all over for him when Olympia got the Sleeper hold on him. In desperation, Rose was able to make it to the corner and kick back, forcing Olympia down onto the match with all of Rose’s weight on his chest and letting go of the hold. Rose was able to drape an arm over the exhausted Olympia to get the pinfall.

Loser Leaves Town Cage Match : Da Crusher vs. “Mad Dog” Pierre Lefebvre

These two unloaded their full hatred on each other in a bloody brawl which saw Lefebvre’s axe handle be used by both men in the match. In the end, it came down two the two men exchanging lefts and rights in the middle of the cage. Crusher was able to uncork one massive running Bolo Punch that knocked Lefebvre off his feet and get the win to send the Mad Dog out of the AWA.

AWA World Tag Title Cage Match : The Road Warriors © vs. The Assassins

After a number of brutally intense matches, The Assassins were going all out in trying to wrest the belts from the Road Warriors. The Assassins came incredibly close on several occasions to winning the belts as they trapped Animal in their end of the cage and hit a massive double back suplex on him. Animal was able to gut it out and press slammed Assassin # 2 over his head before throwing him into the cage and tagging in Hawk. The two Road Warriors double teamed Assassin # 1, finding every way they could to ram him into the cage before hitting a big spike piledriver on him for the hard fought victory.

AWA World Title Cage Match : Hulk Hogan © vs. Ted Dibiase

Hogan had faced Dibiase on two prior occasions and , while Dibiase had not gotten the title, Hogan had failed to get a decisive victory over his wily rival. Both men seemed equally determined that tonight would be the night that the balance would tip in their favor. In a ferocious match that went back and forth, Dibiase took full advantage of the No DQ conditions of the cage match to pound him with the loaded glove, jackhammering Hogan’s bandaged ribs as well as busting open his forehead. When he got the figure four on Hogan and the champ made it to the ropes, Dibiase refused to let go of the hold and looked like he was going to full on break Hogan’s leg. Hogan was able to fight his way out of the hold but the damage had been done. Dibiase had Hogan on his knees in the corner and was just raining down punches on his battered face until, out of nowhere, Hogan caught his fist and looked up at him through his bloodied face with rage in his eyes. Hogan dragged himself up to his feet and fired back at Dibiase before he was able to wrest the glove from his hand and then paid back some dues with loaded punches of his own. He was then able to level him with an Axe Bomber before dropping the Big Leg on Dibiase to get the hard earned one-two-three. Hogan had held onto the belt, but at what cost?

AWA All-Star Wrestling for March 29th

Gama Singh vs. Samu

It is revealed that the mystery man who interfered in the Cuban Commanos’ matches last week is the Great Gama Singh. Singh was accompanied to the ring by the Commandos as he squared off against the always popular “Samoan Dynamite”, Samu. Singh proceeded to bully Samu all over the ring and, although Samu kept firing back with flurries of offense, Singh was always able to bring the match back under his control before locking him in the Cobra Clutch and getting the win in his AWA in-ring debut.

Badd Company vs. The Latin Lovers

While these teams have been very familiar with each other of late, for this match Badd Companied were joined at ringside by a blonde haired man wearing a suit. While he never made direct contact with the Lovers, he constantly provided a distraction to Perez and Valentino, hurling insults and seeming on the verge of taking a swing at the popular tag team . This proved too much for the normally amiable Valentino, who started shouting back at the blonde man. This was a big mistake, as when he turned his attention back to the match, he was met with a thrust kick to the jaw by Tanaka that got the quick pin. It looks like more than one tag team is bringing in a new ally to give them an edge. Perhaps the other teams need to catch up.

Paul Orndorff vs. “Wild Man” Jack Armstrong

This was Armstrong’s second go around with Mr. Wonderful and he was very determined to not have a repeat of his previous match, which was a quick loss for him. He was extremely aggressive from the get go, blasting Orndorff with huge shoulder blocks and slams. Orndorff, for his part, was equally determined to have an impressive showing before his world title shot in Winnipeg, and swiftly rallied to get in his own impressive moves on the Wild Man. The two went at it fist and fire in a match that went back and forth with both men going all out until Armstrong tried to take out Orndorff with the running clothesline. Orndorff ducked at the last second and caught Armstrong coming the other way with a powerslam. He then picked up Armstrong and dropped him on his head with a brutal piledriver. This, however, was not enough for Orndorff, who the lifted up Armstrong and hit a second piledriver before finally going for and getting the pin. Champion Hulk Hogan had best watch out, as Orndorff quite clearly means business.

Road Warrior Animal vs. “Crusher” Jerry Blackwell

After surviving the challenges of the Wild Samoans and the Assassins, the Road Warriors were staring down the barrel of possibly their toughest challenge yet in Kaissie’s Krew. In this match, Animal and Crusher Blackwell were facing off in a solo match up of power vs. bulk, and it looked like it could have gone either way. Blackwell proved resistant to any attempt to slam him and seemed to do a lot of damage with his own offense. Animal went to blasting Blackwell with clotheslines and, while he was not able to get Crusher off his feet, he did seem to be gradually wearing him down. He finally nailed a mighty shoulder block that sent Blackwell crashing out of the ring and Blackwell was unable to make it back in by the bell, resulting in a countout victory for Animal. That didn’t stop Blackwell from grabbing Animal after the bell and hitting a powerslam on the big Road Warrior. This prompted both Hawk and One Man Gang to rush to the ring and, while the two teams looked set to throw down, the AWA officials interceded and told them to keep it for the next tag match.

Ron Garvin vs. “Wild” Bill Irwin

This was another matchup of members of feuding tag teams, with Irwin and his partner in the Wild Bills Billy Jack Haynes returning from their extended tour of Europe to plunge headlong in Col. Robley’s Army’s war against the Garvins. Seemingly learning from the previous match on the card, both men had their partners out and in their corner from the get go. There was no finesse in this match with these two tough customers brawling inside and outside the ring until Irwin just said to hell with it and grabbed his bullrope, nailing Garvin in the head with the cowbell and drawing the DQ. This generated the predictable response from Gorgeous Jimmy and Billy Jack and the two teams proceeded to tear up the ringside area, requiring a whole squad of AWA refs to try and cool the situation down.

Mr. Olympia & Rick Martel vs. Buddy Rose & Bob Sweetan

In the latest match in Mr. Olympia’s ongoing issues with the Playboy Club, he brought in the always popular Canadian champ Rick Martel. The two fan favorites worked like a well oiled machine as they were able to keep the Playboy Club from ever getting their offense coordinated, befuddling them with an array of quick tags and double team moves. For a short while, Rose was able to rally against Olympia but the masked man came back with a precision dropkick assisted by a schoolboy trip by Martel. Sweetan came in to break it up but Martel blocked him while Olympia got the pinfall. He had managed to get a victory over the Southern champ, but would he be able to get it done when the title was on the line?

AWA show at the Winnipeg Arena, Winnipeg, March 29th

Mothership Connection vs. Badd Company

In a shocking upset, after the blonde man in the suit hit Master Gee with a set of brass knucks, Badd Company got the win following a somersault splash by Diamond

Cuban Commandos & Gama Singh vs. Can-Am Express & Samu

Commandos & Singh won when Great Gama made Samu submit to the Camel Clutch

Road Warriors & “Wild Man” Jack Armstrong vs. Ken Patera, One Man Gang & “Crusher” Jerry Blackwell

The Roadies’ partner was originally supposed to be Moose Cholak, but after his retirement at the hands of Kaissie’s Krew, Armstrong was brought in as a replacement. Kaissie’s Krew won when Blackwell hit a running splash on Armstrong.

AWA American Title Match : Tito Santana © vs. Super Destroyer

After a hard fought match that looked like it might go to a time limit draw, Santana won when he hit the Mexican Hammer out of nowhere for the pin.

The Garvin Brothers vs. The Wild Bills

In a crazy brawl, this match went to a double DQ when everything broke down and both teams were fighting in the ring at the same time.

AWA Southern Title match : Buddy Rose © vs. Mr. Olympia

Olympia looked like he would finally get the title when he got the Sleeper hold on Rose, but Rose was able to get a hold of the ropes and pull both men out of the ring. Olympia would not let go of the hold on the outside and , as a result, both men were counted out. After the match, Rose got on the ringside mic and declared that Olympia had just had his last shot at the title.

AWA Canadian Title match : Rick Martel © vs. Bob Sweetan

In possibly his toughest title defense yet, Martel was able to hold onto the title after a slingshot splash.

AWA World Title match : Hulk Hogan © vs. Paul Orndorff

Orndorff came out accompanied by Sheikh Kaissie and the rest of Kaissie’s Krew. Hogan came out wearing both a neck collar and bandages on his ribs, and both were clearly targeted by Orndorff throughout the match. Orndorff attacked him like a wild dog, pounding his ribs with punches and wrenching the champ’s neck every chance he could get. Hogan kept fighting back and kept escaping Orndorff’s attempts to get him in the piledriver, but it looked like time was running out for the Hulkster. He was able to rally with some big power moves, but made the mistake of ducking his head too soon for a back body drop attempt, and Orndorff hit him with a nasty elbow smash on the back of his head that clearly hurt Hogan’s already damaged neck. Although exhausted, Orndorff was finally able to get the Piledriver on Hogan that seemed to knock the champ out, before Orndorff staggered back, drained from the effort. At this point the match took a strange turn, as One Man Gang immediately rushed into the ring and hit the running splash right in front of the ref, leading to the immediate call for Orndorff to lose the match by DQ. Orndorff was furious with Gang, Patera and the rest of the Krew, but Kaissie’s Krew didn’t seem to care.

AWA All-Star Wrestling for April 6th

Chick Donovan vs. Vinnie Valentino

Much like the Cuban Commandos last week with the Great Gama Singh , Badd Company came out to accompany their new partner and mentor (who, like Gama, had interfered in their matches the week before) “Golden” Chick Donovan. For all that Valentino looked to get revenge on Donovan for the Latin Lovers defeat, he showed his weakness for getting distracted, first by getting drawn into a posedown with Donovan which opened him up for a cheap shot by his opponent, and then having his attention drawn by the members of Badd Company at ringside, which allowed Donovan to ambush him by brutally clipping his leg from behind with a shoulder block. Donovan then put Valentino in the Figure Four and forced him to submit.

The Can-Am Express vs. The Heavenly Bodies

As though the Can-Am Express hadn’t had enough trouble with Badd Company and the Cuban Commandos, they now had to deal with the return of the Heavenly Bodies and their pernicious manager, the flamboyant James E. Cornette. The Bodies had appeared in the AWA before (just barely losing a very close match with Tito Santana and Rick Martel) but they were now looking to have a more extended stay, bedeviling the Express in a particularly crazy match. Cornette especially seemed to take glee in annoying the Express, which proved costly to them as Zenk’s distraction allowed him to be taken down with a Prichard lariat, which set him up for the Alabama Jam by Bobby Eaton to get the victory for the Bodies. Who know what sort of trouble they will cause next.

Samu vs. Mike Shaw

The Tank of Col. Robley’s army has been unstoppable as of late, and he proceeded to just roll right over the always popular Samoan Dynamite. Nothing Samu did could halt Shaw’s momentum, who ultimately flattened him with a clothesline before squashing him with a running sit-splash. Whoever the Colonel decides to target with the tank, they had best be prepared.

Jimmy Garvin vs. Billy Jack Haynes

Once again, both men had their partners at ringside, and while the battle raged in the ring , a second battle looked like it could explode at ringside at any time. Tensions reached ahead when Haynes got Garvin in a mighty bearhug and looked like he would crush all resistance out of the Gorgeous One, but Garvin rallied and started raining punches down on the face of Billy Jack. It seemed like he might just force Haynes to let go of the hold, but Bill Irwin took that as his cue to jump up on the ring apron. Ron Garvin immediately rushed over and pulled him down to prevent him from interfering, but while the ref was distracted by this, the Super Destroyer (who had snuck down to ringside) got up on the ring apron and grabbed him by the hair, driving him down throat first onto the ring apron. When the ref turned around, he only saw Haynes covering Jimmy and counted the victory for the member of the Wild Bills. The Army celebrated but Ron pulled his brother from the ring and was just heard to say to him, “I have a plan” before they left the ring.

The Mothership Connection & Greg Gagne vs. The Playboy Club (Buddy Rose, Rip Oliver & Ed Wiskowski)

The Playboy Club seemed especially full of themselves of late, having successfully (by hook or by crook) fended off Mr. Olympia’s challenge to Buddy Rose’s Southern Title and didn’t seem to be taking the match with Gagne and the Connection too seriously. This proved to be a big mistake, as all three of their opponents showed why they are considered among the most skilled competitors in the AWA. Any time Oliver and Wiskowski tried to push the Connection around, they would completely outclass the Club with their double team moves and rapid tags. Gagne put on a technical wrestling clinic that left Rose befuddled. Rose thought he had gotten the advantage on Gagne as he had him trapped in the corner with a bunch of wild, swinging punches. But when he charged in with an elbow smash, Gagne ducked out of the last second and Rose went crashing into the turnbuckle. Gagne then took him down and followed up with a top rope kneedrop for the pin, while the Connection tied up the other members of the Club. After the match, Gagne got on the mic and challenged Rose for the Southern Title.

Mr. Olympia vs. Paul Orndorff

Speaking of Mr. Olympia …. The popular masked man was dealing with a lot of frustration of late due to his failed attempts to break through the Playboy Club and take the Southern Title from Buddy Rose. For his part, Paul Orndorff had plenty of frustrations of his own as his own challenge to the World title fell short due to the interference of his allies in the Sinister Six. This volatile mix led to an intense match, that swung from displays of technical excellence and flurries of brawling. At one point, Olympia got Orndorff in the Sleeper, but after a tense period it looked like Mr. Wonderful might just work his way out of the hold. We would never find out if he could pull it off, as Ken Patera entered the ring and attacked Olympia, leading to the DQ. Orndorff did nothing but stare as Patera brutally beat down Olympia, and after the AWA officials demanded they leave the ring, the two parted together in stony silence.

AWA show at the Met Center, Bloomington, April 6th

The Latin Lovers & Tom Zenk vs. Badd Company & Chick Donovan

Badd Company won when Donovan hit a lariat on Zenk into a German Suplex by Diamond

Phil Lafon vs. Gama Singh

Singh won when Lafon submitted to a Camel Clutch

The Garvin Brothers & ? vs. The Wild Bills & Super Destroyer

The Army and the fans were both wondering who would be the mystery partner of the Garvins in their six man tag match. So it came as a big surprise when the introduction was made, from the Royal Forest of Dean … “Exotic” Adrian Street? Jaws dropped all around as he made his way to the ring with his valet Miss Linda, with his makeup and bleached blonde pigtails. But when he started to skip and prance around the ring, the Army started to laugh out loud in disbelief that this was the man that the Garvins had brought in as an equalizer. Clearly not taking him seriously as any kind of a threat, the members of the Army shoved him around the ring, laughing as they did so. Bill Irwin got him in the corner and thought it would be a good idea to mockingly yank on one of his pigtails. Big mistake. A livid Street responded to this by blasting Irwin with a flurry of blistering punches to the face. Now it was the Garvins’ turn to laugh as they patted each other on the back as Street wrenched Irwins limbs with a series of brutal arm and leglocks. This set the pace for an intense match as Street and the Garvins battled furiously and the Army used their size and power to battle back. In the end, a series of hard punches from Ron Garvin and Street knocked Irwin to the match, and Street then came off the ropes with a running splash for the pin.

Manny Fernandez vs. Samu

A rumor that had spread among the crowd before the match was confirmed in the ring introduction that this would be the last match in the AWA for Samu. This made this a bittersweet moment for the many fans of “Samoan Dynamite” as he had an exciting match with the Ragin’ Bull that it looked like he would take the win at any point. In the end, Fernandez came back to hit him with the Flying Burrito forearm to win the match. The crowd gave Samu a standing ovation as he left the ring, and he took the time to give hugs to many of the fans on his way out.

AWA Southern Title match : Buddy Rose © vs. Greg Gagne

After a back and forth match, the action spilled outside the ring and , when Gagne, tried to get back in the ring, Rose grabbed him by the legs to force a double count out. A spiteful move by Rose, just to keep Gagne from getting a win that wouldn’t even have won Greg the title.

AWA World Tag Title match : The Road Warriors © vs. One Man Gang & “Crusher” Jerry Blackwell

In an battle of giants, Kaissie’s Krew worked to crush the Roadies with their incredible size, while the Warriors fought back with their spectacular strength. The end came when Animal got Gang in a waistlock and, assisted by Hawk coming with a flying top rope clothesline, hoisted the Big 747 back in a belly to back suplex in an impressive display of power. Animal was able to get the pinfall before Blackwell was able to come in and break up the pin.

AWA American Title match : Tito Santana vs. “The Tank” Mike Shaw

In perhaps his toughest challenge yet, Santana went to a 20 minute time limit draw with the massive Tank.

Hulk Hogan & Mr. Olympia vs. Ken Patera & Paul Orndorff

In a reversal of their usual tactics, the members of the Sinister Syndicate instead trapped Hogan in their end of the ring, cutting the ring in half and battering Hogan as they prevented Olympia from tagging in. They seemed particularly focused on Hogan’s injured neck as they wrenched it and hit it with a lot of lariats and suplexes. Patera even got Hogan in a Full Nelson but Hogan was able to get to the ropes before he was forced to give up. Hogan was able to rally and knock Patera and Orndorff over with a big double clothesline, but in falling Patera bowled over the ref. Hogan was able to dive to his corner and tag in Olympia, and the fans hopes rose but then fell when they realized that the ref hadn’t seen it and would inevitably send Olympia back out of the ring. But their disappointment turned to horror when Olympia then proceeded to grab Hogan and hit him with a belly to belly piledriver! The masked man then dashed out of the ring as Patera covered the champ and the ref recovered enough to make the three count that stunned the fans. What could Olympia possibly have been thinking?

Loved the undercard here. Buddy Rose playing "dirty" is always fun. The Garvins and Exotic Adrian was interested. Loved how he went nuts after the pigtails were grabbed.

Bring it on Gamma Sing!

Nice ovation for Samu but you kept it real with the win for the Bull.

Now those were some power moves by the Road Warriors. Would have loved seeing then hoist those big boys up. A belly to back on OMG! WOW

AWA All-Star Wrestling for April 13th

The show opens with the announcement that “Samoan Dynamite” Samu had left the AWA for new opportunities. The AWA wishes Samu the best in his new territory. There followed a package of various clips of past Samu matches.

Greg Gagne vs. Rip Oliver

Gagne is currently gunning for Buddy Rose’s AWA Southern Title. Rip Oliver was clearly determined to ensure he would be in no shape to take it. The Crippler did his best to injure Gagne, putting him in a variety of painful armlocks and stomping on his legs every time he got him down. Gagne dug into his reserve of technical ability and countered out of a lot of close calls, and when Oliver tried to get him in another arm wringer, Gagne reversed it and clamped on the Gagne Sleeper. For all he struggled, Oliver couldn’t make it to the ropes and had to give up the match.

Interview : Mean Gene Okerlund stands in the ring with the members of the Can-Am Express and the Latin Lovers

Mean Gene : I’m standing here with two of the up and coming teams in the AWA. Now they have had some difficulties lately with both the Cuban Commandos and Badd Company bringing in people to interfere in their matches. But now I’ve gotten word that they have some news that will really shake up the AWA tag division. Phil Lafon, what’s the scoop?

Lafon : Well, Mean Gene , it’s true that Gama Singh and Chick Donovan have been messing up our tag matches. So we’ve decided to bring in an equalizer. Somebody smart, tough and experienced. Somebody who will be more than a match for those goons. From now on, our new name will be the Nor-Am Express, because our new partner is … Jose Lothario!

The crowd cheers as Jose Lothario makes his way to the ring and high fives his new partners.

Mean Gene : Wow, that is big news! Think you can top it, Vin Man?

Vinnie Valentino : Think so, Gino! I bet the ladies will be especially happy to hear this news. See , when I was telling a good friend of mine about the trouble Chick Donovan and Badd Company were causing us, he just couldn’t stand it and knew he had to do something about it. He’s been away for a while, helping out his family, but now his dad is on the mend and he is free to rejoin the team. The third member of the Latin Lovers … Javier Cruz!

Some of the women in the crowd squeal as Javier Cruz rushes out and joins Valentino and Al Perez. Both teams shake each others hands and proclaim themselves more than ready for the Cuban Commandos and Badd Company.

Pat Tanaka vs. “Wild Man” Jack Armstrong

Tanaka was , of course, joined at ringside by his partners , Paul Diamond and Chick Donovan. He used his quick martial arts moves to try and maintain control over his bigger opponent, but the Wild Man was difficult to keep down for long. Armstrong started to knock Tanaka down with big shoulder blocks, which Paul Diamond took as his cue to jump on the ringside apron. Tanaka was then able to get Armstrong in a waistlock to set him up to be slugged by Chick Donovan … but that attack was not forthcoming, as Donovan found his way blocked by all three members of the Latin Lovers. Armstrong was able to break loose and take advantage of the confusion by hitting Tanaka with a huge scoop powerslam. The ref turned around to see him covering Tanaka and made the three count. After the match, Badd Company tried to chase after the Latin Lovers, but they were well on the way back to the locker room, laughing as they went.

Interview : Mean Gene Okerlund stands in the ring

Mean Gene : Folks, my next guest has a lot to answer for, given recent events … Mr. Olympia!

A chorus of boos from the audience as Mr. Olympia heads to the ring, accompanied by Kaissie’s Krew and Paul Orndorff. Olympia’s masked face is expressionless as always. Orndorff looks somewhat apprehensive, while the members of Kaissie’s Krew look like the proverbial cat that ate the canary.

Mean Gene : Mr. Olympia, you shocked a lot of people with your actions at the Met Center show. Why on earth would you turn on your best friend, Hulk Hogan, like that?

Mr. Olympia : WHY? YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY? I did everything Hogan asked of me, followed behind him like a good lackey. I thought I was being a good friend, but I see now that I was just being a chump. I help him out in his matches with the Sinister Syndicate, but when I ask him to help me out in my match with the Playboy Club, what does he do? He abandons me mid match to go fight with the Syndicate, and leaves me all alone to get pinned! What kind of friend is that? Well I am through with being a chump. I’ve found a better class of partners in the Syndicate, and when the time comes, I’m going to be the one laughing at you, Hogan!

Mean Gene : Ken Patera, you seem well pleased with yourself, having orchestrated all of this.

Patera : I love it when a plan comes together, Okerlund! I have taken Hogan apart , piece by piece. You are a broken man, Hogan, damaged goods! You have no more friends, you have run out of time, and a week from now in Milwaukee, you will lose the last thing you have left … your title! Mark my words, Okerlund, after this is all over, you will be talking with the new AWA champion of the world, and it won’t be that California beach bum, it’ll be me …. The Strongest Man In The World!

AWA World Tag Title match : The Road Warriors © vs. The Heavenly Bodies

At first glance, the AWA tag champs seemed to drastically overmatch the much smaller AWA newcomers. However, the Heavenly Bodies seemed to have the Warriors outfoxed at every turn, baffling them with quick tags and double teams, as well as being able to distract the ref long enough to sneak in some cheap shots. The Road Warriors started to fire back with their big power offense, so Tom Prichard drew the attention of the ref while their manager, Jim Cornette, threw his tennis racket in to Bobby Eaton. Hawk intercepted it , however Prichard turned the ref around just in time to see Hawk clobber Bobby Eaton with the racket, and he immediately gave the win by DQ to the Heavenly Bodies. Cornette and his team acted like they had just won the titles, much to the annoyance of the Warriors and the crow, but it would take much more than that to get the belts from the champions.

Mr. Olympia vs. Master Gee

The Sinister Syndicate have clearly been a bad influence on Mr. Olympia, as the once popular masked man took an extremely aggressive tack with one half of the Mothership Connection. He clipped Master Gee when his back was turned, savagely worked over his leg and then put him in the Powerlock until Master Gee was forced to give in. Even then, he refused to release the hold on Master Gee, keeping him in the painful move until Iceman Parsons and Greg Gagne charged into the ring to run him off. Olympia was always a contender before, but now he is establishing himself as full on dangerous.

Hulk Hogan, Andre The Giant & Da Crusher vs. Ken Patera, “Crusher” Jerry Blackwell & One Man Gang

Hogan and Andre’s partner was originally supposed to be Mr. Olympia but, after the events of last week, Crusher was brought in as a substitute . In the heat of the match, while Andre was brawling with Gang and Crusher was punching Patera in the corner, Olympia came to ringside and ambushed Hogan, pulling him off the ring apron and driving him head first into the ring steps. Jerry Blackwell took advantage of the chaos and avalanched Crusher in the corner. Andre tried to break away from Gang and break up the pin, but it was too late, and the Syndicate had gotten the win.

Loved your shows. I find myself rooting for your heels more so than your favorites and that is cool and says a lot about your roster and how you use them.... Street as a face, Billy Jack as a heel. Very cool + OMG and Dibiase are wonderful.

Your 6 man tag match at the end is prove of this. I mean watching a team of Andre and Hulk lose is wonderful.

Love the Heavenly Bodies and think Bobby Eaton and Jim Cornette are just devious enough to drive the Road Warriors crazy. Should be a wonderful feud. I hope is goes on for a long time.

Great interview and heel turn for Mr. Olympia. Very cool, Mr. olympia and Mr, Olympia Ken Patera together.

I realized after the fact that I was a year ahead of the pace for turning Street face, but I liked the idea of him being the equalizer for the Garvins so much I just went with it.

I figured it would be alright to bring in Andre on the losing side since he wouldn't be taking the pin. Trying to get across the angle that the Syndicate is really getting to Hogan and it might just all be slipping through his fingers.

The Olympia turn is something people have been suggesting to me for a while, but I resisted the idea. Then I was looking to move some things around on my roster, and the time just seemed right and it made sense for the angle.

I liked that turn. The events surrounding it, and the effective use of getting Patera into the number one challenger by his win over the champ. The newly heel Olympia can challenge Hogan if his running mate isn't successful on the 20th. Hogan's reign is in serious trouble.

I also dig the run of the Road Warriors, proving their dominance over the division by retaining the titles at every defense, however the Heavenly Bodies are here and are pushing the champs to their limit, even gaining a DQ win recently. Could they be the Kryptonite to the Superman Road Warriors?

Tito Santana is one of my underrated favorites of all-time. Fun to watch, especially defending the America's title around the horn. Getting out of no where wins, or going the time limit. He's a great wrestler to be in that role. I really enjoy his work here.

AWA All-Star Wrestling for April 20th

Jimmy Garvin vs. Super Destroyer

The big Super Destroyer had gotten some big wins over both of the Garvin Brothers upone joining Buck Robley’s Army, but of late the Garvins have seemed to rally with the addition of Adrian Street to their ranks. Super Destroyer looked determined to end that streak right away, bowling over Garvin with his superior size and pounding him with power moves. The scrappy Garvin was equally determined to outlast the masked man, ducking out of some big lariat attempts and block an attempt to put him away with the Super Plex, with the lovely Precious cheering Jimmy on the whole way. It seemed, though, that Super Destroyer would not be denied as he knocked down Garvin with a big boot and whipped him into the ropes for a back body drop. However, he ducked his head too soon and Garvin, seizing advantage, nailed him with a swift, devastating DDT. One – two – three, and the crowd exploded with cheers at Garvin’s come from behind victory.

Tito Santana & Da Crusher vs. “The Tank” Mike Shaw & Manny Fernandez

The Army and, specifically, the “Tank” Mike Shaw have been mounting an intense campaign to wrest the American title from Tito Santana and, for this tag match, Shaw brought in long time rival to Santana, the Ragin’ Bull Manny Fernandez. For his part, Santana brought in a pretty tough customer of his own, AWA legend Da Crusher and the match was as crazy as you can expect, with all men brawling in the ring at multiple occasions. On one of these occasions, Crusher had gotten Shaw in the corner with big swinging rights and lefts but, as the ref was ushering Santana back into his corner, Fernandez put on what looked like a loaded elbow pad and blasted Crusher in the back of the head with an elbow smash. Shaw then grabbed Crusher in a body slam and followed up with a running splash for the pin. An ugly win, but let’s see how well he does without Fernandez to do his dirty work for him.

Adrian Street vs. Billy Jack Haynes

Adrian Street has turned out to be a real thorn in the side of the Army as of late and Haynes was taking no chances with the eccentric Englishman, bringing both Col. Buck Robley and his partner, “Wild” Bill Irwin , to ringside with him. Street seemed determined not to let that distract him as he led Haynes a merry chase around the ring, ducking and dodging his big shots and wriggling out of attempts to wear him down. Growing more frustrated, Haynes went into the Army’s usual bag of dirty tricks, getting the Colonel to jump on the ring apron to distract the ref while he sent Street into the ropes where Irwin, cowbell in hand, was waiting for him. Street, however, was able to reverse the whip and it was Haynes who took the cowbell to the head. Street then got Haynes in a roll up to get the win. Street and Miss Linda then scurried laughing from the ring as the Army were enraged by the result.

Jose Lothario vs. Gerry Morrow

The newly renamed Nor-Am Express are driving hard to take the AWA Southern Tag titles from the Cuban Commandos and this match threw their newest member, veteran Jose Lothario , in the ring with “Comrade” Gerry Morrow. Morrow was clearly looking to nip this challenge from Lothario right in the bud but the always tough competitor was not about to be taken lightly as the battle went back and forth. The two men wore each other down until Morrow tried to get the victory with a powerslam, but Lothario was able to hook the leg and sneak in a small package to get the quick pin. The led to the inevitable entrance of Acevedo and Singh on one side and Zenk and Lafon on the other, but Lothario had gotten the clean victory.

Interview : Mean Gene Okerlund stands in the ring

Mean Gene : Folks, my next guest is facing possibly the greatest challenge of his career … the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, Hulk Hogan!

The crowd roars it’s approval as the Hulkster comes to the ring. He is much more solemn than usual, still taking time to high five the fans but moving much more slowly, with his ribs still bandaged and a collar wrapped around his damaged neck.

Mean Gene : Hulkster, you have certainly been through the wringer as of late. You taken a lot of damage while running the gauntlet of the Sinister Syndicate. You’ve had your very best friend, Mr. Olympia, betray you right in the middle of a tag match. And now you must defend your title against Ken Patera . Do you think you have anything left to overcome this latest challenge?

Hulk : (more low key than usual) Well, y’know , Mean Gene , I did my best for Mr. Olympia. The one time he asked me for help, I was in his corner. If he wants to blame me for me being attacked by the Syndicate, then so be it. I thought we had each other’s backs, but it turns out I was wrong. And now Patera says that this means my world is falling apart and that now is his time to take the title. Well, Patera , if you think that is going to stop me from holding onto my belt, you’ve got another thing coming. (*getting more worked up and tearing off his collar*) You say you’re going to take my belt? You say you are going to break me? Well better men than you have tried and I’m still here. Bring it on, big man! And what are you going to do when the full power of Hulkamania runs wild on you! (huge cheers from the crowd)

Ken Patera vs. Iceman Parsons

In the past, Patera had managed a hard fought victory over Parsons to take the American title, but this time out, in his last match before his world title bout, Patera seemed fixed on making an example of Parsons. He ploughed through the popular Iceman like a freight train, levelling him with lariats and crushing him with power moves before administering the coup de grace, a huge over-the-knee backbreaker to get the pin. If Hogan is going to hold onto his World title, he certainly has his work cut out for him.

The two bigger men worked over Garvin and Gang held Garvin in place while Super D came in with a clothesline, only for Garvin to duck out of the way and Super D clotheslined Gang out of the ring. When Super Destroyer then turned around, Garvin dropkicked him out of the ring, giving the Gorgeous One the victory in the Battle Royal.

In a crazy match, after Jim Cornette got involved and both the Bodies and the Warriors used his tennis racket, both teams were disqualified.

The Ultimate Showdown - AWA World Title match : Hulk Hogan © vs. Ken Patera

Hulk Hogan came to the ring with the full support of the fans, but also with his injured neck in a collar and his injured ribs heavily bandaged. Both provided ready targets for Patera, who violently wrenched Hogan’s neck and pounded his ribs with big punches. For his part, Hogan fought back heroically but as the match wore in , it seemed like the damage Hogan had taken in the past few matches had taken too much of a toll. However, it seemed like not all hope was lost when , after Patera had whipped Hogan into the corner and charged in, only to get a big boot to the face. Hogan seemed to come alive, blasting Patera with big lefts and rights and, when Sheikh Adnan jumped on the ring apron, Hogan punched him straight off . Then, when the ref went over to check on the Sheikh, Mr. Olympia, appearing seemingly out of nowhere, came off the top rope and hit a dropkick right on the back of his neck. Hogan staggered back to his feet, only to get driven to the ground by a huge lariat from Patera. Patera picked up Hogan , pressed him over his head, then drove him hard down onto his knee in a brutal backbreaker. One … two … THREE!! The crowd was in shock as the result was announced. Ken Patera stood with his foot on the chest of the broken former champion, the title belt held arrogantly above his head.

Great shows. Loved the Billy Jack/Adrian Street match. Street dodging the cow bell and winning on a roll up was fun.

Jimmy Garvin winning a Abttle Royal against those monsters was cool.

I really wish WWF would have called you long time ago. The way you use Hogan is priceless. It s the same match they used but your results vary perfectly. He wins. He loses. It just makes it so much fun. I am not a Hogan fan but when I read your matches I find myself very interested because I don;t know the results like I did in real life.

Keep up the great work!

AWA All-Star Wrestling for April 27th

Al Perez vs. Paul Diamond

Diamond came out with his partners, Pat Tanaka and Chick Donovan, in tow. The other two members of the Latin Lovers, Vinnie Valentino and Javier Cruz, looked to do the same to watch Perez’ back, but Perez sent them to the locker room, assuring them he had the situation well in hand. For most of the match, this was the case as Perez consistently held the upper hand on Diamond with a dazzling display of technical wrestling. As is their usual method, Badd Company decided to turn the tables with Pat Tanaka jumping on the ring apron to distract the ref while Diamond whipped Perez into Donovan who had jumped up on the other side. But Perez had this spotted as he knocked off Donovan with a forearm before the Golden One could strike. Diamond then tried to follow up with a superkick, but Perez ducked it and got a roll up on Diamond for a quick pin. Tanaka and Diamond scrambled into the ring for a post-match three on one, but Perez dashed out of the ring and headed to the locker room, having outfoxed Badd Company.

Tito Santana & The Latin Lovers (Vinnie Valentino & Javier Cruz) vs. Mike Shaw, Super Destroyer & Manny Fernandez

“The Tank” Mike Shaw has been making a concerted effort to wrest the American title from Tito Santana and looked to be making a statement in this match. He had some particularly vicious exchanges with Santana in this match and , later in the match, when he got Valentino in the Army’s corner, he rained down a flurry of nasty shots followed by a crushing avalanche that got him the pin. Santana is going to need to pull off a miracle to keep his title against the clearly determined Shaw.

Rip Oliver & Ed Wiskowski vs. The Mothership Connection

What started out as a fairly straightforward match between the Playboy Club and the Mothership Connection grew progressively more out-of-control as the match wore on, with tempers flaring on both side caused by dirty tricks on the part of the Club and double team moves on the part of the Connection. Even after Parsons got the win by hitting the Rumper Stumper on Oliver, both sides continued fighting post-match until several refs had to intervene.

Jimmy Garvin vs. Sheikh Adnan Kaissie

A rare in-ring appearance for the Sheikh, and he didn’t seem to be taking the Gorgeous One seriously as he spent much time pre-match grandstanding and trash talking Garvin. Bad move, as the moment the bell rang, Garvin hit him with the DDT and got the very quick pin. One Man Gang charged the ring to attack Jimmy but this just prompted Ron Garvin to come out and, rather than face both Garvins, Gang decided he would get his shots in another time.

AWA Canadian Title match : Rick Martel © vs. Mr. Olympia

Ever since his turn to the dark side, Mr. Olympia has been taking no prisoners and looking to do as much damage as he can. He was extremely aggressive in his challenge to the Canadian champ and Martel, normally able to keep it cool now matter what the provocation, was incredibly fired up in response. Both men seemed to be adjusting their moves for maximum impact, with the momentum switching back and forth. As the match wound down towards the 20 minute time limit, it looked like it just might go the distance, when Olympia managed to get Martel in the Sleeper hold. Would he be able to put Martel out in time to win the title? Would Martel be able to successfully break out? Martel managed to work his way to the corner, kick back with both legs and bridge over with Olympia’s shoulders to the match. The ref counted the one-two-three and Martel got the win at the very last second. Martel offered to shake Olympia’s hand after the match, but Olympia smacked it away before heading back to the locker room.

Rick Martel & Hulk Hogan vs. The Olympians (Ken Patera & Mr. Olympia)

The Olympians spend much of the match working over the already hurt Hogan and rebuffing Martel’s efforts to make the save. In spite of an heroic effort by both Hogan and Martel, Patera got Hogan over his knee in a back breaker position and Olympia came off the top rope and hit the Hulkster with a top rope flying elbow drop to get the win.

I think that what I love most about your booking of Hogan is how he's booked differently as a babyface, even though back then he hadn't reached the WWF level yet. Hogan looks more human & vulnerable, so-to-speak. It really looks like he can meet his match in Ken Patera.
