Kris Zellner and David Bixenspan are joined by Joe Gagne (Joe Versus the World) to discuss the week that was July 27- August 3, 1990. Listen to us discuss the toughness of Haku, the dumbness of Ole Anderson, the weirdness of Jim Herd’s decision making and the awesomeness of 1990 Eddie Gilbert!!!

This was great. I listen to these marathon shows on marathon late night walks and I felt completely immersed in the time period. I love the format of news item, in-depth background on figures in the news item, repeat.

I'll request September 8-September 14 1985 because that's my birthday week (30 years!), but no worries if that's not what you have planned.

I'm just over an hour into this and fascinating stuff once again. I didn't have anything against Todd but think Joe is a better guest and as a result it seems to flow a lot more easier.

I'm certainly going to check out those Steve Beverly newsletters in Jason's scans (there is so much stuff there that I find myself getting lost amongst it), whilst the Haku story reminded me of one I read in the Observer. It was the time he was King Haku and was in a bar trying to get some women to 'bow down before the King', it resulted in some guys coming to her defense and a fight erupting. Needless to say, they came out on the wrong end of it!

Enjoying the show so far. I really liked the SWS talk as that's such an obscure group that doesn't get much talk. I think I started getting Observer in 1990 but none of the context of who was who would have meant much to me then so I certainly didn't retain any of it. I too have never seen Matwatch but I know that was seen as on par with Torch & Observer at the time.

Did NAWA/SAPW ever draw? I looked at the results & stuff on prowrestlinghistory and it looks like they never really did. They were on TV here in Richmond for like 4-6 weeks at the very beginning. They ran one live event here, it must not have drawn, as it was gone from TV within a couple weeks. The way I remember it, they ran TV for like a month setting up the live show (which I planned to go to but decided against on the day of), then the week after the live show they did announce a return date on TV but then the show & the TV were gone either the next week or the week after. I'd be curious to know a bit more about Nelson Royal's ACW and this group, as I can kind of see how the idea of running the small towns that JCP abandoned as seeming like a good idea but not sure if paying for TV would have been the death blow or if they just didn't have the talent to draw. Or maybe with more pub they would have drawn? This is really the beginning of the plight of most Southeast indies I guess.

Very much enjoy your podcasts Kris, but one correction regarding Kerry Von Erich's WWF debut: He was definitely referred to as "Kerry Von Erich", and Vince even went so far as to acknowledge he came "from one of the greatest families in the history of wrestling".

It was certainly unusual to hear Vince acknowledge this, but he did so in a way that it almost sounded like he was being forced to, that there was no way he couldn't acknowledge it. Check it out on YouTube sometime to see what I mean.

Anyway, great job and I'm looking forward to more!

  • 3 weeks later...

That Adams vs Austin feud seems so Ratchet especially for the time.

I didnt know Gordy had his decline to early, I watched a few of his Watts era WCW matches on the network and he looked decent and that was years later.

Great Show, I need these long podcasts to get through work, I might listen to episode 3 tomorrow
