Ranking Every WrestleMania Match

Recommended Posts

It is WrestleMania week! And we at Place to Be Nation love lists. So, over the past month, members of our staff have spent many hours crafting PTBN’s All Time WrestleMania Match Ranking just for your enjoyment!

We have argued. We have number crunched. We have reshuffled multiple times. But, here is our final, ultimate, complete ranking of every single WrestleMania match in history. All 300 of them. The list only includes those matches that aired on pay-per-view and is an aggregate of votes from those that participated in the project. With that said… away we go!

Part Five: 60 - 1

Part Four: 120 - 61

Part Three: 180 - 121

Part Two: 240 – 181

Part One: 300 – 241

228: Big Boss Man vs. Akeem (WrestleMania VI): The Twin Towers explode! The match was basic but before the bell we got some fun fireworks when Ted DiBiase popped out of nowhere and cracked Big Boss Man with a clothesline and a beatdown.

You guys have no idea how much impact this match has had on me.

EVERY time I see two former tag partners against each other a little Gorilla Monsoon pops into my brain.

"Former tag-team partners, Bigboss Man and Akeem, now have to face each other!"

Also, Ted fucking decks Bossman at the start of this match. Always thought it make Akeem seem like a real jobber that he couldn't win this match after that assault.

232: Jake Roberts vs. Andre the Giant (WrestleMania V): The blowoff to a red hot feud didn’t quite click, mainly due to Andre the Giant’s physical condition. They worked hard to cover for it with lots of interference and mayhem, but in the end it wasn’t enough to get it over the hump.

You guys didn't mention the DiBiase run-in here where he tries to steal Damian.

I've always loved this because it metaphorically links Mania 5 back to 4 (DiBiase helping out his old partner in crime) and forward to 6 (DiBiase vs. Jake).

I have no idea if that was in their thinking or not, but one of those little things I thought it was neat to think about.

I demand a 10 hr podcast

as for that Bossman Akeem match...christ what a shitty underdeveloped squash that was. I know Akeem was a horrible worker but cmon this match could have been drawn out a little longer

Hey, Judy, with our recent GWE Top 100 show going 6 and PWSS going almost 10 on theirs, we thought you might be happy!

94: Randy Savage vs. Ted DiBiase – WWE Heavyweight Title (WrestleMania IV): The grand finale of the lengthy WrestleMania IV World Title tournament sees Randy Savage take home the top prize with an assist from Hulk Hogan. Ted DiBiase did his damnedest to buy and wrestle himself the gold but comes up just short yet again. The match wasn’t their best but it was still really good and the fanfare, interference and start of the Mega Powers angle help it along as well.

The narrative arch from Mania 3 to Mania 5 is so underrated.

Just three perfectly told stories

- Andre turns on Hogan

- Ted tries to buy the belt / evil twin ref Shennigans

- Savage is the net beneficiary of the tournament and the alliance with Hogan that follows explodes

Just think that is three years of such tremendous storytelling. Vince and Pat were the Lennon and McCartney of booking when they were on their game.

  • 3 weeks later...

Meant to comment on this but got sidetracked with making my GWE ballot, Really enjoyed this series. Also, since I wanted to do something a bit more mindless to switch things up from the GWE process, i made the all-time Wrestlemania card as determined by the PTBN all-tie rankings list of these 300 matches.

I followed the same rules as used in the PTB podcasts (only one match per card, wrestler can only be used once, must use the two singles world titles, the tag titles and I-C title). Basically, I went down the list in strict order from number one on down, adding a match to the all-time card as I went down the list. If i reached a match where a wrestler, year or title was already on the all-time card, I would pass on the next one. No judgement calls about whether to put a match or not on the all-time card, if the match was eligible and was the next in line it went on the card. The only two exceptions to this rule were: 1) if in the process of elimination a Wrestlemania only had one match left to be picked, that match would automatically be added to the card to represent that year's Wrestlemania; and 2) if only one match for one of the required titles was left during the process of elimination, it would automatically be added to the card as that title's representative. Both of these rules came in play at certain points.

So, in chronological order, here is the all-time Wrestlemania card as dictated by the PTBN match rankings (the match's PTBN ranking is listed after each match):

Wrestlemania - King Kong Bundy pinned SD Jones (250)

Wrestlemania 2 - Jake Roberts pinned George Wells (265)

Wrestlemania XXVI - Michelle McCool, Layla, Vickie Guerrero, Maryse, & Alicia Fox beat Mickie James, Beth Phoenix, Gail Kim, Kelly Kelly, & Eve Torres when Guerrero pinned Kelly (292)

Wrestlemania XXVII - Jerry Lawler beat Michael Cole via submission. Steve Austin was the referee. The mystery GM declared Cole the winner via DQ due to bias by the referee (300)

Charlotte vs Becky vs Sasha. New girls and allegedly new title.

That's the best candidate, if it's indeed a new title lineage. The other option without moving anything else is Jericho vs. Styles.

If you're shifting things around, you could make it the I-C title match and replace Van Dam vs. Regal from X-8 with Kane vs. Angle. If you go with Brock vs. Ambrose, you could replace Lesnar vs. Goldberg at XX for Torrie and Sable vs. Keibler and Gayda.

But the best bet is either the women's triple threat or Jericho vs. Styles.

What amused me is that it managed to end up with both the best match and the worst match of all-time on the card.

Man...I don't know if King vs Cole is the worst Mania match ever, but it's certainly the one that pissed me off the most.

It should have been the easiest match in wrestling history to book (King kills him dead in 2 minutes flat) and instead they overthought it, tried to add all kinds of bullshit like Cole getting heat, needless extra people involved, the convoluted finish, and above all the bullshit reversal that lead to the angle continuing FOR ANOTHER TWO MONTHS for no earthly fucking reason. And you end up with that piece of offensive shit we got.

Boricua, that is an awesome take on the list, thanks for taking the time for putting that together. Really cool.

Redman... yeah that was a real debate on Lawler/Cole. In a vacuum there are probably worse matches but when you factor in all the hype, build, potential, time spent and time used on building and executing it... it really just the worst.
