Lance: "Hello everybody and welcome to another BIG day of Championship Wrestling!"

Dave: "That's right we're very excited to back here at TV-5 here in Memphis."

Lance: "Back where we belong Davey and right now to go a little more in depth on the subject is promoter Jerry Jarrett."

(Jerry Jarrett comes out to the desk and is met by Lance)

JJ: "I just wanna say first off I'm very excited to bring the CWA back to Memphis and back to TV-5. Now I know this brings about all sorts of questions about the USWA, TBS, and Ted Turner. I don't want to spend a whole lot of time on this but I do wanna say that I have nothing at all against Ted Turner or Fritz Von Erich or anyone that's involved in the USWA…they are a great organization and we will still work with them in the future exchanging talent and even perhaps doing shows together but we just have a much different philosophy on pro wrestling and I got into this business to bring the best action I could to the fans of Memphis and the Mid South….I have no interest in conquering the world or being a global business…..we've cut out a nice niche for ourselves and have done very well here in the CWA and we plan to pick up where we left off before the USWA and all this expansion business."

Lance: "Well I'm sure the fans appreciate you addressing it but we've got some big things in store for the fans of the CWA, tell us a little bit about that."

JJ: "You are exactly right Lance and it kicks off tonight at the Fairgrounds in Nashville as we will have a tournament tonight to crown the NWA Southern Tag Team Champions featuring 8 of the top teams in the area in a single elimination tournament with new champions walking out of there tonight…..Then right here in Memphis on Monday night at the Mid South Coliseum we will crown an NWA Southern Heavyweight Champion with another single elimination tournament featuring 8 top contenders and one man walking out the champ!"

Lance: "Son of a gun, as if that was not enough….right here on television TODAY…there's gonna be a battle royal and the winner will be the TV-5 Television Champion and that title will be defended here on television EVERY WEEK!"

JJ: "That's right and how exciting that will be knowing there will be a title defense right here on tv each and every week! There's a lot more great announcements to make in the coming weeks…but I think we've talked enough, let's get to the ring for some action!"

Lance: "I agree, Davey….take it away with the ring announcements."

The Fabs put on a clinic…..much to the fans delight…..Stan Lane hit Keith Eric with a side kick followed by a enzuguiri kick to the back of the head leading to the pinfall.

HTM: "That's right Mr. Russell, all my fans have come here today because they wanna see me become the Television Champion and then Monday Night I'm gonna bring home the Southern Heavyweight title, then the Col.. Peggy Sue, and myself are gonna set them belts on the dashboard of my pink caddy and head down to Beale Street for the biggest celebration this city has ever seen!"

Sonny: "You better believe it…..but there's some more gold I've got my eyes….and I want those Southern Tag Team titles tonight in Nashville….and these guys right here and the ones who are gonna bring it home!"

(Soul Man blares throughout the studio as Troy Graham and Porkchop Cash make their way out)

Sonny: "These guys are running over EVERYBODY in that tournament tonight and they will be your Southern Tag Team Champions and there's only two things you can do about it…..NOTHING and LIKE IT!"

Highlights-

Woman brings out Humongous on a chain attached to his neck and as soon as she unhooked it….he destroyed Daniels…..after only a couple of minutes he locked Daniels into the Cobra Clutch and got the win…however he would not let go until instructed to by Woman.

Dundee tosses HTM over the top rope but he lands on the apron and stays there…Dundee

Valiant turn their attention to Ox Baker, they double team and nearly have him eliminated

But as Baker is going over the top he grabs Valiant and pulls him over with him Dundee grabs

Valiant's leg in and attempt to bring him back in….as this is happening….HTM runs across the

ring and scoops Dundee from behind causing all three to crash to the floor leaving the Honky

Tonk Man victorious as your new TV-5 Television Champion!

(As HTM leaves with the belt held high, 'The King' joins Lance Russell at the desk)

Lance: "I wanna welcome out the 'King' Jerry Lawler! Monday night you'll be competing for the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship."

King: "That's right Lance, I want that Southern Heavyweight Championship because it will bring me one step closer to getting a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship….and I'm talking about the REAL World Championship held by Ric Flair, not the one held by that backstabber Tommy Rich."

Lance: "A lot of bad blood still between you two."

King: "There certainly is….and Rich has all those dopey USWA fans duped into thinking he's innocent in all this and somehow I'm to blame….but these great fans here in Memphis know the truth and that's all that matters….I'll hunt down that clown and deal with him in due time…even if it means going to crappy places like Georgia or Texas…I'll get my revenge on him and hopefully Tommy Rich will never darken the doors of TV-5 studios ever again!"

Lance: "Well best of luck with that….but let me tell you there are some heavy hitters coming to the Mid South Coliseum this Monday night competing for that Southern Heavyweight title….we're gonna run down the whole card in a few minutes but I know one person who has it out for you is none other than Austin Idol."

King: "Oh yeah, that jerk Austin Idol has always got it out for me….so much that I hear he's hired Abdullah the Butcher to try and take me out in a match tonight in Nashville in hopes I won't even make it to the tournament."

Lance: "Speaking of Idol, he sent in these pre-recorded comments directed at you so let's take a look at that while we have you out here right now."

(VTR: Austin Idol)

Idol: "Jerry Lawler…..I don't know that there are words that I'm allowed to say on television to properly convey my loathing of you….I hate you Jerry Lawler and everything you stand for, Mr. So-called King…what a joke! I'm the King…I'm the Universal Heartthrob….I make this business go round….not you Jerry Lawler! The next belt I want in my trophy case is that NWA Southern Heavyweight title and while it's no problem for me to beat you in the ring….the fact remains that you have the whole promotion in your back pocket. Your buddies with the promoter Jerry Jarrett, you play softball and went to school with referee Jerry Calhoun so the odds of me getting a fair shake against you is slim so in an effort to level the playing field….I have put a bounty on your head Lawler….$10,000 to anyone who can take you out of this tournament. The first man to answer the call is the most dangerous man in wrestling Abdullah the Butcher…if you somehow survive him tonight in Nashville, don't think there won't be others who need the money….people you may least expect…..so called friends might just need some extra cash and do my dirty work…..you just never know do ya? Of course that's the price you pay to be the King, huh? See ya Monday Lawler….then again….maybe not."

Lance: "Some very ominous words from Austin Idol."

King: "Ominous words Lance? Perhaps, but to me they sound like words from a desperate man who knows he doesn't have what it takes to beat the King so he's gonna try to pay someone to do his dirty work….well that's just fine Idol, I didn't get to be called the King because I backed down from punks like you….bring on Abdullah the Butcher and whoever else who needs the money….I'll be ready and waiting and I just hope I get half a chance to get my hands on you at the Mid South Coliseum on Monday night."

Lance: "You heard it from the King, we're gonna take time out and see the King in action later on in our expiration of time match right here in our Main Event today on Championship Wrestling but first we're gonna run down the card for Monday night."

Highlights-

A good back and forth match here with Zhukov holding his own with the King. At one point Boris fires Lawler into the corner and charges into a boot to the face from Lawler….Zhukov goes down….Lawler goes to the 2nd rope and drops the fist…..1-2-3!

Winner-

Jerry 'the King' Lawler

As Lawler is getting his hand raised The Brisco Brothers hit the ring and attack Lawler…seemingly in an attempt to collect the bounty….but before they can do too much damage….The Fabulous Ones hit the ring and they break out into a brawl on the floor of the studio….As Lawler attempts to recover back in the ring…..Humongous led by Woman comes out and attacks Lawler from behind and locks on the Cobra Clutch….he lifts Lawler into the air and is choking him out with this move…The Fabs are still fighting the Briscos on the floor…..Bill Dundee comes in and hits Humongous across the back with a chair….but he doesn't break the hold….Dundee hits him again…..and again….and again and finally on the fourth one he breaks the hold and turns around and looks at Dundee…Woman jumps in the ring and hooks the chain back to his collar and leads him out of the ring as Dundee checks on Lawler.

Lance: "Fans we're out of time…for Dave Brown, I'm Lance Russell saying so long everybody!"

Russell: "Blassie, what in the sam hill is going on here??"

Blassie: "It's a celebration……Jack and Jerry's nephew Lance Brisco has come out to celebrate the victory!"

(The new champions take the belts and leave the ring followed by Freddie Blassie and their "nephew"…..as Steve Keirn checks on Stan Lane at ringside who is bleeding from the back of the head from the chair shot)

Calhoun reluctantly agreed and just as he counted to one, 'Gonna Fly Now' from Rocky began to play over the P.A. and Jerry Lawler came down the aisle in a neck brace waving off the count…..He got into the ring and the match was on!

Great read. Not too short, not too long. Promos to the point. Really got a kick of seeing Lance Von Erich renamed Lance Brisco. I guess The Fabulous Ones will have to find themselves a 3rd man to contend with the Briscoes.

 

I hope I'm gonna see more Honky Tonk Man vs Jerry Lawler stuff. I think you could have something very interesting here!

Lance: "Hello everybody and welcome to another BIG day of CWA Championship Wrestling, I'm Lance Russell alongside Dave Brown and Davey, we have some great action here today and a new Southern Champion was crowned Monday night at the Coliseum."

Dave: "Yes there was….'The King' made it through the tournament and walked out the new Southern Heavyweight Champion!"

Lance: "He sure did….but not only that on Saturday night in Nashville the Brisco Brothers became the new Southern Tag Team champions with some help from an unexpected guest….let's take a look."

(Footage from Nashville airs with the Briscos defeating the Fabulous Ones with the help of Lance Von Erich…..we also see clips of the post match promo with Lance being proclaimed "Lance Brisco" and the Briscos trashing the Von Erich family as the VTR ends, back in the studio, "Everybody wants you" by Billy Squire plays)

Lance: "There you see how the Briscos won the titles…we didn't have the Fabulous Ones scheduled to come out but it sounds like they may be coming out to talk about this situation in Nashville."

(At this point Classy Freddie Blassie comes out with Jack and Jerry Brisco wearing red sequined tuxedo vests and bow ties, carrying canes, followed by Lance Brisco wearing a track suit.)

Lance: "Freddie, what is the meaning of this??"

Blassie: "Lance Russell, this is your Southern Tag Team Champions, The Fabulous Brisco Brothers!"

Lance: "FABULOUS Brisco Brothers?? Come on Blassie, give me a break out here."

Blassie: "These guys beat the so called 'Fabs' so now not only are they the champions, but they are the Fabulous Brisco Brothers…..so deal with it!"

(Steve Keirn and Stan Lane come out as Lance stands between them)

Stan: "This has got to be a joke! When we get you guys back in the ring Monday night….we will take those belts and show you who the REAL FABS are!"

Blassie: "Hold on kid….there's no match Monday night…We beat you and there's no rematch because it was a tournament….you aren't the former champs so you are outta luck…check back when you can PIN the Bruise Brothers….you guys barely got past those two so you won't see a title shot til you can pin them!"

Steve: "Listen here old man, you don't dictate anything to us….YOU WILL put those belts on the line this week!"

(Promoter Jerry Jarrett comes out)

JJ: "Listen, unfortunately guys…he's right, they don't HAVE to put the belts on the line against you this week since there aren't currently any #1 contenders…..However, I have signed a match between you and the Bruise Brothers to determine who the #1 contenders are that will take place this Monday night…..and you can't face these guys in a non-title match because before they won the belts they signed an open contract for a regular tag team match good anywhere, anytime and someone has come forward and already signed to face them….so please guys…head to the back and you guys will get your shot in due time."

(Stan and Steve grudgingly head to the back)

Blassie: "Wait a minute Jarrett…Who signed the open contract to face us this week?"

JJ: "When I got back to my office this morning my phone was already ringing…..it seems your harsh words from Saturday night made their way to Texas…..and on the other end of the line was KEVIN VON ERICH…he asked…actually no he DEMANDED that he and his brother Kerry get a match with you guys so I faxed them over that open contract and they signed it and sent it back to me. I also made another fun match for this Monday night that will see Mr. Lance BRISCO here…taken on his former 'family member' Mike Von Erich in a singles contest."

Blassie: "WHAT?? You can't do that!! The Fabulous Briscos were gonna take the week off and go back home and relax before their first title defense."

JJ: "Well change of plans guys…it's signed, sealed, and delivered….this Monday night in a non title match The Briscos face The Von Erichs!"

Lance: "We're also gonna hear from Austin Idol who is none too happy after coming up short against the King this past Monday night…especially after all the lengths he went to trying to take out Lawler before the tournament."

Dave: "Idol is in a very foul mood but before we get to him, let's go to the ring to a guy he has used to his advantage recently….HUMONGOUS!"

Lance: "Well King, looks like you have some new hardware there with that Southern Heavyweight title."

King: "That's true, no thanks to that big goof that just left in the hockey mask….he's becoming a thorn in my side recently. However, Austin Idol can't accept defeat he's already went and demanded a rematch and since I'm not a coward like the Brisco Brothers…I'm going to grant him a rematch because the NWA has upped the ante here. Not only is the Southern title on the line this Monday night….the winner will also get an NWA World Title shot the following week against 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair and you know that's my ultimate goal to be the World Heavyweight Champion."

Lance: "I know that's right, now speaking of World Champions, apparently your comments last week raised the ire of the USWA World Champion, Tommy 'Wildfire' Rich…he made some comments about you on the USWA show this week, let's take a look at a video.." (Lawler interupts)

King: "No Lance, we're not going to listen to any crap from Tommy Rich…the so-called USWA Champion…..notice I didn't say WORLD champion…because he's not! You know what USWA stands for Lance?"

Lance: "United States Wrestling Association?"

King: (laughs) "No, it stands for Ugly Stupid Worthless A-holes…"

Lance: "Ok, now take it easy Jerry.."

King: "Sorry Lance, but every time someone even mentions that jerk Tommy Rich it gets my blood boiling! I can't stand that guy and I can't stand anybody associated with the USWA…."

(Woman comes back out)

Woman: "Hello Mr. Lawler….enough about Tommy Rich, let's talk about someone who is still here in Memphis….my man Humongous….the reason you accepted a rematch against Austin Idol is because you know if you put that belt on the line against my Humongous, you will lose and lose in dramatic fashion."

Lawler: "Look sweetie, I'm sure there's a Motley Crue video somewhere you are running late for shooting so I'm not going to keep you, just wait til I beat Austin Idol…and then Ric Flair and your big deranged goalie can have his title shot…."

Woman: "Well Mr. Lawler….Humongous isn't really interested in belts…however we would like that $10,000 that Idol has put on your head…." (before she finishes the sentence Humongous comes out from behind the set and attacks Lawler….he locks in the Cobra Clutch and is swinging him around like a rag doll….as Dundee, Mantel, and the Fabs all run out as Lance yells to go to break)

You seem to have a great handle on Memphis Wrestling. I never saw it when I was young and it is a pleasure to read your promotion.

 

Just a question.... Was Dutch Mantell called Dirty Dutch even when he was a babyface? And did Lawler, Dundee, Idol, Rich, Valiant and Mantell just keeping switching form heel to face or were any of them consistently one or the other?

I grew up on Memphis Wrestling my earliest memories start around '83 up until it's final incarnations in recent years.

 

Yeah Dutch usually was referred to as "Dirty Dutch" even during his brief runs as a face in Memphis.

 

After 82 or so Lawler was face up until around '89 I believe. The rest mentioned switched back and forth pretty frequently.....but somehow it worked. I'm hoping to perfect the Memphis formula that somehow made that feasible....lol.

Due to his injuries, the King will not be in Tupelo tonight to compete in the scheduled 8 man tag team match but he promised to find a worthy replacement….this brought Jimmy Valiant back out who informed Hales that he would be more than happy to "stand in for the Kingfish!" The fans seemed fairly pleased.

Dave: "We don't know who that was that came in with the mask….they were wearing a long sleeved baggy sweatshirt that made it hard to tell exactly how big they were…."

(Jerry Lawler comes storming out with his face bandaged up on one side where the fireball hit)

King: "Give me a break Dave Brown….I don't care what that idiot was wearing….we all know exactly who that was that came out and burned me and cost me the title!"

Lance: "Who Jerry? The guy had a mask on and as Davey mentioned he was wearing a baggy sweatshirt and sweat pants…"

King: "That was Tommy Rich and everybody knows it! That jerk has it in for me….he wanted to cost me the Southern title and wants to try and collect that $10,000 bounty that Idol has on me….I mean come on Lance, what kind of a guy puts a bounty on someone like that? Well Tommy Rich I know you will hear this because they play clips of me every week on the USWA show so people will have a reason to watch it…..Tommy Rich, I'm gonna make it my mission in life to take that stinkin' USWA title from you just so you can get a taste of what it's like…..Rich, I promise you the next time you show up in Memphis, mask or not I'm gonna take you out once and for all……Now as for Austin Idol, he's gonna get a shot at Ric Flair's NWA World Title that he doesn't deserve…..you can bet I'll be watching that one closely and I hope he gets what he deserves. Lance: "Well they better be more than fabulous this Monday night if they wanna get the win over the Von Erichs….speaking of the Von Erichs, they sent in this video with a few choice words about their title match this week.

Kevin: "Last week we came to Memphis and we showed the Brisco Brothers what happens when you shoot your mouth off about the Von Erich family."

Kerry: "That's Kevin, and since we did come to town and beat the Southern Tag Team Champions, Mr. Jerry Jarrett has seen fit to grant us a Southern tag team title match this Monday night in Memphis. We plan to bring the gold back home to Texas this week!"

Mike: "Oh and Lance, don't think we forgot about you….I'll have my eye on you and if you try to interfere, I'll will make sure you are non factor in this title match!"

Kevin: "So Brisco Brothers, you dress up like the Fabulous Ones and bring Freddie Blassie with you…..but you will find out the Von Erich boys will always rise to the occasion and we will be the family that's standing tall!"
