I hadn’t really thought about Cornette OVW commentary but Loss talking about how over the top it is can now not stop me from thinking that every time. Rob Conway adds commentary and isn’t very good. Can we have one OVW match not be a complete bullshit finish? The action was fine here but my patience of this era of OVW is honestly running pretty thin. I don’t really connect to many of the characters and the matches are such bullshit without any of the hokey appeal that Memphis can pull off. *3/4 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Loss Posted February 1, 2017 Report Share Posted February 1, 2017 This is the kind of match where you really appreciate the meticulous-if-annoying blocking of WWF production because they cut away from the match to show Rob Conway, who is running his mouth without even looking at the action in the ring and seem to miss some key stuff in the match, and the announcers seem conflicted on what to call and are splitting their attention. Yeah, I'll just come out and say it: OVW sucks. The biggest problem with Cornette's announcing is that he's always turned up to 11, so when something deserving of an 11 happens, it doesn't get over like it should because he never comes down. We'll keep following OVW because it's important and probably has some good moments with some good talent, but not a fan. Conway seems to alternate between babyface and heel week to week. The match was going good until the heel ref came in again. Seriously, what is Cornette's hard on for ref distractions/run ins/bumps? It's super annoying. Even more annoying than his LOUD NOISES commentary. Rico looked good and Flash took a crazy bump that the camera totally missed. However, that's overshadowed by the shit that was going on. GSR Posted March 20, 2017 Report Share Posted March 20, 2017 OVW Heavyweight title match for Rico’s belt. Flash sprints to the ring and attacks Rick before the bell has even rung. Rob Conway joins Cornette and Dean Hill at the announcing desk and the camera cuts away from the in-ring action to show us this. Flash takes a flat back bump from the apron to the floor that we almost miss because of this fascination in showing us Conway. Rico with a suplex and a somersault leg drop for a two. Flash with a jawbreaker, superkick and a twisting leg drop off the middle rope. Rude Awakening necbreaker and a dropkick for another two. Flash takes a high backdrop over the turnbuckle to the outside, yet Conway is wittering on so the commentators barely talk about it. Rico with an axe handle off the top to the floor. A flapjack, nip up and a senton bomb off the top for a near fall. Heel referee Phil Fair turns up in the ring from somewhere and starts arguing with Nick Dumayer and now Robert Brisco is out to attack Fair. Rico with a spinning heel kick and a standing moonsault but the referee is pre-occupied in trying to get Fair and Brisco out of there. Conway leaves the broadcast booth, heads into the ring and goes to hit Rico with a chair. Rico grabs the chair and the two of them fight over it. Flash with a dropkick to the back of Rico and both his and Conway’s heads collide with the steel chair. Dumayer finally gets Fair and Brisco out of there, turns around to see Flash covering Rico, makes the count and we have a new OVW champion. Conway and Flash put the boots to Rico after the match until the Damaja makes the save. Oh dear. This is getting really frustrating. Why did they cut away from the in-ring action to show us Rob Conway at the announcing desk? That makes him look more important than the match, and ultimately your Heavyweight title. Flash takes two hellacious bumps to the arena floor and the camera only just catches both. Why did the heel referee have to come out? Then more nonsense with the referees fighting each other. How did Nick Dumayer completely miss Conway’s interference? Could he not hear the noise? The heads colliding with the chair? Why did he not see an unconscious Rob Conway in the ring after he’d finally got Brisco and Fair out of there? The match has a fast start, but they immediately cut away to show Conway talking with Cornette. Flanagan takes a huge backdrop over the ring post, but the camera misses it. Rico looks really athletic in his moves, but too bad Cornette screams through the whole match so you can't concentrate on the match. Then we get more ridiculous fighting referees and interference.
