The Cena match just looks way out of place with some of the other stuff though.
Guest Bruiser Chong
I'm not sure I like the idea of a seven-year stretch (1989-1996) being represented by like what, five matches? I know there were some unsavory champs during that time, but Savage had some entertaining defenses, as did Bret during his first run.
sek69
WWE doesn't like to have Savage matches on their DVD releases unless they were at Wrestlemania or involved Hogan somehow.
anarchistxx
People voted for the matches. There are supposed to be 5 from each decade. No Race/Backlund means I won't be buying it.
Marty
Hmmm.... Here's the original survey, which oddly enough is still votable, it appears. http://survey.wwe.com/history/ And the list Sek posted (the matches with italics are ones that I've noticed don't appear on the survey (eihter fully, or different dates), which means either the voting was full of shit, they didn't like the results of the voting, or they had to adjust things for time reasons). Pedro Morales vs. Ivan Koloff 2/8/71 MSG Bruno Sammartino vs. Killer Kowalski 4/29/74 MSG Bruno Sammartino vs. Superstar Graham 4/30/77 MSG Superstar Graham vs. Bob Backlund 2/20/78 MSG Bob Backlund vs. Greg Valentine 1/16/82 Philadelphia Iron Sheik vs. Hulk Hogan 1/23/84 MSG Hulk Hogan vs. King Kong Bundy 4/5/86 Mania Los Angeles Hulk Hogan vs. Paul Orndorff 1/3/87 SNME Hogan vs. Andre 3/29/87 Mania III Hogan vs. Andre 2/5/88 Live Main Event Hogan vs. Randy Savage 4/2/89 Mania Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior 4/1/90 Mania Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart cage match 8/29/94 SummerSlam Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels 3/31/96 Mania Michaels vs. Mankind 9/22/96 Michaels vs. Steve Austin 3/29/98 Mania HHH vs. Cactus Jack 1/23/00 Rock vs. HHH vs. Kurt Angle 8/27/00 SummerSlam Rock vs. Austin 4/1/01 Mania Austin vs. Jericho 12/9/01 undisputed title tournament final Rock vs. Undertaker vs. Angle 7/21/02 Rock vs. Brock Lesnar 8/25/02 Angle vs. Chris Benoit 1/19/03 John Cena vs. Chris Jericho vs. Christian 6/2/
JHawk
I'd say the voting was full of shit since everybody I know voted for Race-Backlund simply because the full version has never been available.
Loss
Yeah, that match being excluded has me sort of pissed off.
Mad Dog
Ugh... these DVDs are really starting to annoy me. Stop double and triple dipping on matches already. Every DVD they release has at least 1 or 2 matches that's on another DVD. That Hogan/Sheik match has to have been on at least 6 DVDs over the last 4 years. I'm also annoyed that Race/Backlund didn't make it as I voted for that one.
Al
I've got 10 of these matches already, and my collection really isn't that extensive.
Guest HarleyQuinn
Seems like the voting was shit... Eras go 1970: 4 matches, 1980: 7 matches, 1990: 5 matches, 2000: 8 matches
Mad Dog
I picked this up today. The best part about this is they show highlights of all the title wins and you can see the total apathy of the fans during the first 3 HHH title wins. Mad Dog
This also reminds me of how fucking terrible Pedro Morales was.
Guest Bruiser Chong
His appeal to the Hispanic community was the sole reason for his title reigns, no?
Mad Dog
In fairness he was pretty over. He was just an awful wrestler. Not that Sammartino was a lot better.
Marty
I picked this up today. The best part about this is they show highlights of all the title wins and you can see the total apathy of the fans during the first 3 HHH title wins. I noticed that too. Funny shit. As for Morales, he was pretty below average, but look at his win and see the crowd jumping up and down. Really, as much as I hate to say it, that's all that matters. It was a different era, mind you, and I don't think his stuff, nor the finish of that match, would get over today, but it worked then.
sek69
By the time I started watching the WWF, Pedro was already halfway between midcarder and jobber. I always had a hard time squaring that he was a former world champion.
Guest Bruiser Chong
What's funny about that is his skills hadn't even deteriorated. He always sucked.
