Bracket #1 QUARTERFINALS, Match #2

Loss

Vote for the wrestler that you think had the better career in WWE (whether you base that on impact or match quality is your decision), from 1985 to 2005. Voting will end tomorrow morning at the latest. Please give the wrestler's name first and any explanation thereafter. Thanks.

The Rock

A tremendous draw, and on top for longer. Eddie, though, was by far the better worker.

Eddy Guerrero

Voting for Rock is admittedly probably the right thing to do, but I feel the need to plead Eddy's case here. As for Rock, he is one of the biggest draws the company ever had, became a very good worker as his career progressed and had a great attitude in terms of putting over those around him.

Eddy Guerrero overcame a lot of bad decisions in his life to reach the level he reached, though, and the fact that he was able to pick himself up out of the doldrums and come back, finally figuring out a way to adjust his style to the WWE style and work against all opponents, huge and small, means that I don't think people should completely count Eddy out here. Had Eddy's 2003 happened in 1997, would he have hit the same level Rock did? Would Rock have been the draw he was without Austin paving the way? I'm inclined to say yes, but it's something to consider, because fans tuned in for "Stone Cold", and Rock made them stay around a while longer. He deserves massive credit for that, just like Eddy deserves massive credit for going from the fringes of both wrestling and life to the world title in under two years. He hasn't relapsed. He drew money. He represented the company well, and has helped them tap in to a new audience. He gets my vote not because he's had a better career than Rock, but because he's overcome so many obstacles thrown his way.

If Eddie had been able to hold it together, and had a strong run as champion last year, I might have been inclined to vote for him.

Rock.

What Loss said was noted but Rock is still the right choice here. I'd love to see Eddy and Rock wrestle with Eddy going over, though.

Eddy Guerrero

I'll try not to repeat what Loss said, but it's pretty much what I'm thinking. Rock took what the promotion gave him and ran with it, whereas Eddy got knocked down, got up again, stole the promotion's attention after his comeback and reached the peak of the promotion (or at least his brand) via the fans' interest and no one else. For a guy with the personal problems he had, that's an incredible accomplishment, even if I didn't do it justice in that one sentence. Eddy's had better matches than Rock has, particularly when they were at the top of the mountain. He's had better matches with Angle than Rock has had, he's had a better match with Brock than Rock has had, he's had a better match with Show than the Rock has had, and this is from a guy who's a bit past his prime as a worker, or is supposedly not quite the worker he was in WCW or elsewhere before that. (He still isn't as good as he was in WCW, but I wanted to make a point.) Eddy's incredibly underrated in both the mic area, as well as general charisma. As long as the promotion is squarely behind him, he can play both face and heel to the best of abilities. The jury's a bit out as far as him playing heel these days (or more specifically, the results of him playing heel), but Rock got a number of face reactions during his heel days (which were fairly well-booked), and had trouble maintaining consistent face reactions, particular vs. Hogan and Brock, although the former would be a tough task for anyone. Rock has been the better draw, but Eddy in 2003-04 was no slouch in the draw department either. On the surface, Rock looks like a sure winner and may in fact be the right vote, but considering what Eddy earned in his career, and it's not limited to upmost respect, he gets my vote due to his accomplishments.

I'm also going with Eddie but for a different reason, and actually a reason Loss had indicated when voting for a different wrestler. Eddie did more with less. he wasn't handed anything on a silver platter. He was never shoved down the fans' throat like Rock. He didn't have to adjust his game. When Rock wrestles with a good wrestler, the amtches are usually good. When he wrestles with a bad wrestler, the matches are usually awful. With Eddie, there is always a shot that the match will be good regardless of the opponent.

The Rock

Talk about parallels with Hogan/Benoit. Eddy's undeniably the better wrestler, but he hasn't even had half of the impact that the Rock has had on the federation.

I'm going with Eddie here as well. Like I said about Hogan, Rock's schtick started to get old and his "special appearances" got more and more annoying the more he made them (the Diva Search one is a great example). These guys had a short feud I remember, but I don't remember if they actually went at it in the ring, which probably would have been a treat.

It's close, very close, but like Loss and Marty said, Eddie overcame so much with little help to become what he is now.

The Rock gave electricity at a time when the fans were hot for everything; Eddie managed it without getting a McMahon Guaranteed We'll-push-you-until-you-get-over-and-even-if-you-don't at a time when things were less hot.
