The Jim Ross Is A Grouchy Hateful Vile Human Being thread
1004Holds replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
I haven't listened to that interview, but it's funny how people at various forums have been calling him bitter because of what he said. Most people I read didn't seem to even listen to the interview; they just got mad because he criticized guys like J.R and Steve Austin. -
Slam! Wrestling article on anti-semitism in pro wrestling
1004Holds replied to Bix's topic in Pro Wrestling
Well he usually did, does that make him racist? Also I have no doubt that a man referred to as Captain Redneck was not at all unfamiliar with dropping n-bombs and whatnot, but that doesn't make Dusty racist. I'm sure we all have a friend or co-worker we hang with that's a little too loose with certain terminologies. Was having white rockers perform the work of black rockers and then get all the credit and money for it racist? Cultural appropriation, especially when it's turned into a cheap parody is never a good thing. 'Course, you don't realize these things as a kid. I was always more annoyed by things like Saba Simba and Kamala. -
I mean...does the world REALLY need a fourth Mick Foley autobiography? I mean, the first book was very good, because it was a good story going from working small time gyms and beating himself up to becoming a top star in WWF. The second book was mildly interesting, because it gives the story of a year in the life of a top star in the WWF, as well as what looked like the end of his full-time career at that point. His third book was a self-absorbed piece of garbage, which could basically be summed up as "WAAAAAAH! VINCE WON'T LET ME USE MY IDEAS FOR MY MID CARD FEUD WITH TOMMY DREAMER AND TERRY FUNK! WAAAAAAAH!" I can only imagine how bad the fourth book is going to be. Also, good luck selling that one without the WWE publicity machine, TNA television reaches so many folks, there are still fans out there who probably think Kurt Angle retired out of the blue three years ago. I think Mick Foley should have retired by 2000. His apperances after his time as commisioner weren't memorable to me. The only good that could come of this is maybe he'll be more honest about his career in the WWE.

Myth: Triple H is the most hated wrestler on the Internet. Why I think it's a myth: I have seen way more defenders of Triple H on the wrestling forums I've been to than critics. I actually didn't post on the Internet for years because it amazed me how people online would overrate Triple H to no end, going so far as to say that he was the best wrestler in the world in 2000. I had seen several promotions by then, so I could not understand this. They seemed to bash Rock and Jericho way more than Triple H and if you pointed out any flaws in his work some of these online fans would get really emotional. Even today I've seen many editorials defending HHH even for his match at WM25 and talking about how he's a great worker because he didn't leave the business like Rock and Brock Lesnar did. It boggles my mind. Myth: Triple H keeping the belt at WM XIX was good for business.

Here's an interesting quote from a recent interview by Rob Van Dam: http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/106...d-WWE,-More.htm

I remember Zenk saying on his website that the Can-Am Connection were going to get the tag titles for the long-run and that originally the Hart Foundation were only short term champions. I figured that was due to the Can-Ams being so popular, but this is coming from someone who saw a few of their matches on Youtube and did not see what was happening when it first happened.

Why does HHH hate Jericho so much? I used to think he legit hated the Rock until Jericho came along. I think the only wrestlers I've ever seen him have more disdain for were RVD and Booker T.
-
actually it was that a girl would never leave him for someone like Angle (or for anyone really). Not necessarily that he wouldn't do a job for Angle But isn't that why he didn't do the job in the first place. I thought that was the reason why the ending got changed.

I always seen Bret as being rather eccentric, but I don't know why that of all things would drive him crazy. Because he was always so obsessive when it came to anything regarding his character. He's obviously ok with it since they mentioned his name several times putting Kidd over as his only protege, which I guess is a better way to establish his connection to the Harts than "here's a kid who grew up on the family farm and is currently fucking Natalie". I always felt that most wrestlers were pretty sensitive with how their characters were potrayed. Hogan sued WCW for pointing out he was bald when Russo did that "shoot" promo on him. Austin walked out one time because they were thinking of jobbing him out to the Coach. Allegedly HHH refused to lose to Angle when that love triangle story with Stephanie was going on because he felt that his character wouldn't lose to someone like Angle.

What Wellness Violations could Vickie have? I thought they didn't test GMs, announcers, etc.

The only time I have ever liked Batista was when he powerbombed Shawn Michaels for beating Ric Flair at WM24. I wish they would use him like 911 was used in ECW because at least he would be something more than unintentional comedy for me to watch.

I'm kind of weird when it comes to being a wrestling fan. I started watching in 1992 because my older brother liked watching WCW. I didn't care for it much because most of it looked really fake. Then, one day I saw Sting doing the Scorpion Death Lock and I was like "OMG that's an awesome move!" Then I later saw Vader doing his moonsault and I was like "What the hell? I've been missing out." So if those two appeared, I would watch and enjoy it but for every Sting, Vader, Bret Hart, Yokozuna, Undertaker, and Great Muta there was stuff like the Ding-Dongs, T.L Hopper, Bastion Booger, and face Doink. I couldn't get into the WWF for several years because of stuff like that and I was actually part of the audience the WWF was going after. I couldn't understand how AAA and WCW could mostly avoid stuff like that (or so it seemed at the age of 5) and yet WWF seemed to fill their programs with that kind of foolishness. I wasn't patient enough to sit through Raw just to see the few guys I cared about and even when I saw them, it ended up being about fighting over jackets or giants who couldn't wrestle. I ended up enjoying the video games more than watching the shows when it came to the WWF. AAA seemed more reasonable, but my knowledge of Spanish was very limited so I could only really follow the in-ring action. Then 1997 comes around and I tune into WCW to see that Sting has changed into a silent badass. I was hooked during 1997-2001. Any wrestling, whether it was from Mexico, Japan, or the US I would try to watch it if I could. I didn't know about dirtsheets and tape trading was impossible (no money and no connections) so I would try and download the stuff I couldn't get on TV online. It took a lot of patience to wait for these videos to download, but once the next weekend came I didn't regret it. It also helped that wrestling was popular at the time due to the Attitude Era (I hate that term; it sounds so cheesy) and Nitro being generally great among other things so most of my friends would talk about the storylines and which wrestlers we liked and hated. This was the general pattern until WCW died and the Invasion storyline happened which turned off some of my friends and my siblings who wanted to see Goldberg vs. Austin or Sting vs. Undertaker and instead got lame storylines like Booker T vs. the Rock and DDP vs. Undertaker. I kept watching in 2001 despite not liking the direction the WWF went into (though the matches were really good and great in some cases), but in 2002 my social life improved and high school ensured that I didn't have much time for pro wrestling. I tried to watch Raw, but seeing Jericho lose once again to HHH, Hogan coming back (I hated him with a passion), the nWo failing, RVD losing to HHH and then having the belt end up on HBK, Rock losing at Summerslam to Brock Lesnar (I didn't like Lesnar at the time), Katie Vick, and other decisions like that turned me off as a viewer. I still watched Smackdown when I could, but Raw was the primary show I watched so once I stopped watching that I pretty much quit watching WWE regularly. There were no alternatives that I knew of in the US apart from TNA which I gave up on once Jeff Jarrett got the belt and I stopped downloading matches from Mexico and Japan so I pretty much stayed away with a few exceptions (ex. Eddie Guerrero's title reign and feud with Rey Mysterio). I generally didn't hear much about wrestling apart from seeing a friend of mine in 11th grade do the Walls of Jericho to a friend of ours and talking to my math teacher who was a fan of the NWA. I wished I had known more about them at the time, but to me the NWA was basically WCW (I know that's wrong now.) It wasn't until I lingered around on Youtube that I got to really see what I missed in pro wrestling. Watching matches from Stampede, Georgia Championship Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling, and others brought back my interest. It was motivated partially by nostalgia too since I wanted to watch Rock's feud with Jericho again. When I heard Jericho was coming back I decided to give the WWE another chance, but I couldn't get into their main eventers except for Jericho. Raw seemed better than when I had stopped watching it, but Smackdown was still the more wrestling oriented and entertaining show. This only improved once the draft happened so I do not bother with Raw. How do I see pro wrestling? Pro wrestling at its best is one of the most entertaining spectacles I have ever seen. The beauty (couldn't think of a better word) of seeing two wrestlers play to the crowd and show their showmanship in the ring is something I have not seen duplicated in any other form of entertainment. When done right, the whole "It's fake" thing disappears because after a while the line between reality and fiction gets blurred. Most blockbuster movies can't do that for me. The memorable storylines from the promotions I've watched always had a certain logic to them that could keep me watching over and over again. I only gained more respect for it after reading various autobiographies (Bret's and Jericho's in particular). Unfortunately, it's rare when pro wrestling ever reaches that kind of high. There's a lot of potential in it as a form of mainstream entertainment, but it's killed by cheesy promos, stupid storylines, and mediocre matches. That's how I've felt in my various stages of watching wrestling. When it was good, it was amazing. When it was bad, it was disgusting.

Not sure if you do storylines here, but is it true that at one point the Rock was supposed to be gay?
-
Well, Rock wasn't the only wrestler who did that. RVD did the same thing. It's just that both guys would rather spend time looking at their own matches to see what they could do better instead of watching their co-worker's matches. I don't think Rock would have spent hours watching his own tapes and timing himself with a stopwatch (according to his ex-wife if they're not together again) if he didn't at least like his job.

Is TNA the worst wrestling promotion in history?
1004Holds replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
That was the one where they were basically told that people wanted to see more wrestling and less shoot angles that didn't make any sense, right? I'm probably younger than the average poster here, but I remember being really confused when the New Blood vs. Millionaire's Club angle was going on. I thought the latter was a bad ripoff of the nWo at first, but as I gradually put their stuff together all I got out of it was "There's some weird ish that happens behind scenes" and "Hogan really is friends with Bischoff; that's why he almost always wins despite looking fifty years old and being a bad wrestler" I'll note that the latter stuff was when I thought that having a lot of moves or flashy moves = good wrestler. I'll also note that I hated Hogan from the day he came into WCW because as a kid Sting was my favorite and I felt he was a glory hog. I didn't read dirtsheets though; in fact the only written stuff I saw about wrestling were books like Have a Nice Day and the company magazines. If I read anything online, it was WrestleCrap. -
This will be fun. This might be the most unintentionally funny DVD since the Self-Destruction of the UW.

Kind of new here, but I have a few myths I would like to see answered: The Rock wrote his own material. Also, he never politicked. Promos in the WWE were never scripted. When they started scripts in 2001, everyone's mic skills got a lot worse. Japan,Mexico, and Canada have more respect for wrestling than the United States. Only technical wrestlers are good wrestlers. The only talented Harts were Bret and Owen. Bad News Allen was Stone Cold before Stone Cold. It is the responsibility of the worker to get over on his or her own. Backstage politics do not affect the pushes people get.
