Nintendo Power didn't run non-Nintendo ads until '98, so it wouldn't have been in there.

This leads to another rumored arrival, as the reason why WWF brought him back in '91 was that Herb Abrams wanted to book him for the UWF. -

[1995-04-03-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels and Sid

I always thought that the commercial break was intentional so that they could hype the footage for that week's Superstars. Did the Observer ever report otherwise? -

WCW aired a Steiners video on a Worldwide in the Spring of '95 announcing that they would be soon returning, but the deal fell through and they didn't come back until March of '96. -
Savage was the champ defending against Warrior. Flair won the belt at the TV taping held three days after Summerslam, or the day after it aired. As for the quick title changes in '91 and '92, they wanted to see how much business a PPV held six days after the last could do, and they thought that the best drawing card for such a scenario was Hogan losing the title and trying to get it back on the next show. Why they vacated it? I assume they wanted to get the belt on Flair without having him beat Hogan so as to save the first PPV match between the two for Mania. As for why they did Bret's title win at a TV taping, probably because they already had a PPV card in place and advertised.

[1995-01-21-WCW-Saturday Night] Up Close w/ Brian Pillman
Boondocks Kernoodle replied to Loss's topic in January 1995
I looked through the Torch archives but since they're barely searchable, it was hard to find much info. I do see that they were hyping the division as early as November '94, and that early plans called for it to include Koko B. Ware and Tito Santana, who would have been the "AAA representative." Also they wanted Sabu for the division but he only wanted to wrestle as a heavyweight.- 12 replies

[1995-01-21-WCW-Saturday Night] Up Close w/ Brian Pillman
Boondocks Kernoodle replied to Loss's topic in January 1995
They were hyping up the Cruiserweight title tournament for a long time before it happened. At least a year, but I didn't know it was this early. I was searching a while back for match footage of Pillman as California Brian but never found any. Did he ever actually use the Baywatch Brian name? He was back to Flyin' Brian by April at the latest. Re: his hair, is this when he had the curly hair on top with the long straight extensions in back?- 12 replies

Actually, they were known as the Three Faces of Fear, about a year before Meng and Barbarian.

How the hell is Jerry Jarrett not in? What is the argument against him? Is the voting committee stocked with Memphis vets still mad about their $25 payoffs?

Good read Bix. I didn't know about the ring change in '98. As for the original Kennel match, was there anyone in WWF in '99 who would have been around the Oregon territory to see that? -
The biggest mistake they made this year was giving away Cena-Mysterio on free TV. That was the biggest money match they had left other than maybe Cena-Undertaker and they blew it with 1 hour buildup. I doubt WWE saw it as such a big potential draw but they're a bunch of dumbasses. I know Rey shouldn't have been wrestling at all on Summerslam but, well, he did, and it would have been more worth it to wrestle in a main event for a six-figure payoff rather than wasting himself in a meaningless six-man. They could have held off on Punk for a few weeks but kept him on the fans minds by some unusual methods like planting fans with "CM PUNK RETURNS AT SUMMERSLAM" signs at ringside, having Colt Cabana jump the rail and yell "CM PUNK WILL BE AT SUMMERSLAM THIS SUNDAY" over the ring announcer's mic, and maybe even having Punk hack into Raw's signal a la the infamous Max Headroom incident and deliver a pirated message. Or just kept him off TV and surprised the fans with his appearance at the show. But I think passing over Cena-Rey as a PPV main was a bigger mistake than blowing Punk's return.

I have a couple of questions: 1) Did Harley Race have a role on WCW TV before the '91 Bash? And did he work any TV matches in '90-'91 besides the Bash '90 match with Rich? 2) Did Zbyszko have a role on TV before WrestleWar '91 or was his appearance there a surprise?

I always thought they should have done a regular Starrcade '89card with Flair vs Muta, Luger vs Sting and Steiners vs Warriors. All matches that happened, although Flair-Muta would have gone much longer than 2 minutes. On the undercard, they could have done (assuming Funk was willing to do more matches) Funk vs Sawyer (former J-Tex guy vs new J-Tex guy), MX vs Dudes rematch, Pillman vs, um, somebody. Doom vs Samoans? OK this is a really crappy undercard but I think those top matches would have worked better as title bouts than in the Iron Man/Team tournaments. And the show shouldn't have been on a freakin' Wednesday. As for Steamboat, the 8/14/89 WON says he told John Arezzi that after agreeing to terms they tried to cut $50,000 from his salary and he was so insulted that he backed out.

WWE advertising The Rock's in-ring return for Survivor Series
Boondocks Kernoodle replied to Bix's topic in Pro Wrestling
Dave was talking on yesterday's Observer Radio like this is going to happen. He also said that they'll probably try to get Rock to wrestle at Rumble. That probably wouldn't be such a good idea, though it does create the possibility for a fun storyline where heel COO HHH tries to call the Mania match off and the only way to ensure it is for Rock to win the Rumble and Cena to win the title back from Alberto. -

Probably because it was assumed that nobody would be lame enough to book a Coal Miner's Glove match as a PPV main event.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jerr...son-sell-226494 NBC is developing a drama based on 1980s wrestling. I know Norman Lear was supposed to do a wrestling show years ago that never happened, but I figure with Bruckheimer producing, it has to at least get on the air, right? Hopefully the NBC/USA synergy doesn't lead to any WWE involvement.
