  1. Gene points out that Flair has been strangely quiet about Hogan for a while. Flair takes the bait, and says he doesn't blame him for not showing up at Spring Stampede. They are making Flair as heelish as they possibly can without outright turning him yet, I guess because he has to get through Slamboree first. Decent promo.
  2. Not quite as awesome as everything involving him so far. Great in moments, and I have no idea what he's rambling about in others. Him not carrying the belt, and his reasoning for not having it, is weird.
  3. Cornette throws out challenges to construction workers, bouncers, ditch diggers and other Manly Men who think they're bad, to try to take on Bruiser Bedlam. They get in some good lines toward Tracy Smothers and his family. Smothers runs out and goes after Cornette but Bedlam hits him with brass knucks and does a number on him. Smothers juices. Job guys try running out to save him with no luck. They are building Bedlam up for Savage. Later in the show, maybe just after a break, Smothers does a good, fired up promo covered in blood and being held up.
  4. Scott Bowden throws powder in Lawler's eyes immediately and Gilbert beats him in less than ten seconds!
  5. To the tune of "Dirty Deeds Done Cheap". Good video, but come on Memphis, why do you always use the same songs?
  6. DiBiase is in a cemetary showing off his money, which seems strangely non-self aware. He says he's going to use his money to find the Undertaker.
  7. Undertaker sighting in a Dunkin Donuts, but that place is disgusting, so yeah.
  8. I've seen this match before, but it never grabbed me quite like it did this time. It was probably topped later, but not very many times, and this is a match that I think has a worthwhile place in the discussion of top All Japan matches. First of all, Kawada is out of this world in this match as a heel. The cheapshots on Misawa before they faced off were great. I also really like his interaction with Kobashi, much of it centered around the knee injury from December. One of my favorite moments in this is the look he gives Misawa on the apron when he and Taue decide to work over Kobashi's knee. In short, "This has nothing to do with you, stay out of it". He toys with Kobashi a lot, and seems to be relishing his chance to work him over, which leads to a great payback where Kobashi kicks him in the knee as he's glaring at Misawa, which causes him to double over in pain. Also, a brilliant moment came toward the end when Misawa had been in for a while and finally tagged Kobashi. Kawada didn't have much left himself, but he had just enough to dropkick Kobashi in the knee. He was out to make a point. Kobashi, to his credit, gets in shots of his own. The match is also laid out in a way to make him look strong, which I really appreciated. In addition to getting the win on Taue, he also was put in a position to save Misawa quite a few times. It looked to be a story of growth happening within the match, because for the first half of this, it's Misawa always saving Kobashi. It's cool now that these teams have had two matches in six months and Kobashi, the lowest ranked guy of everyone in the match, has beaten both Kawada and Taue. This is also the first "Holy cow, that's a long finishing sequence" All Japan match of the year. I think jdw has alluded to this being the longest finishing stretch in All Japan up until this point. But in some ways, this was a great match before it even started. These two teams having a rematch after a fought hard tag league match just a few months before, and one where each pairing -- especially Kawada/Kobashi and Misawa/Kawada -- seems to carry extra weight. In the case of Misawa/Kawada, what stood out is Misawa's patience wearing thin over Kawada's cheapshots. Because this will be important in a match I'll get to soon, I'll also note that Kobashi took a few shots at Kawada's knee out of spite, and Misawa had the perfect opening to go after it a few times. But he didn't. If anything hurt this, and this is a very slight issue, it's that there were a few moments where they had the crowd ready to explode and didn't follow up. I really wanted to see an extended Misawa/Kawada fight -- similar to the one in the Kobashi/Fuchi tag from the previous year -- but they never quite got there. The crowd seemed to be waiting for that, but Misawa seemed annoyed more than angered. That aside, classic match and something that will finish pretty high for the year.
  9. I don't know that that's true. I recognize it as an all-time classic GOAT contender, but there are matches that aren't quite as good that I'd rather watch, even with these four. This doesn't have the emotional hook for me that some of their lesser matches do. The 5/94 match is one of those, which I'll talk about shortly.
  10. Couldn't get into this one as much as the TV match, but Jake is the man. It's not even what he does, it's how he does it. Even his selling is slimy.
  11. Part of the problem is that he sometimes does things *so* heelish that it makes it hard to suspend disbelief. He doesn't seem like a genuinely bad guy. He seems like a guy playing a character of a bad guy. Doing promos about someone's dead alcoholic father and pouring alcohol on someone who is proud that he doesn't drink is such a ridiculously over the top bad guy thing to do that it's clownish. The high points of Jericho's feud with Michaels worked better because they did a better job of establishing Jericho's motives, and I like angles like the one with Rebecca where even though no one believes it to be so, it's plausible that it was an accident. The Rey feud worked better because it was a simpler angle and the in-ring was much better.
  12. I liked the Ultimate Warrior as a kid, but I thought even then that had he been in the same promotion with Sting and Luger during that same time period, Sting and Luger would have been a bigger deal and would have been higher on the card.
  13. I don't have any TWA, but I agree that it needs to go on.
  14. I honestly think from a wrestling standpoint that this has been the best yearbook so far. Do those who have watched others agree? Oddly enough, I was looking forward to it the least because I was sick of this time period. Also, I have to say how very cool it is to see so many people posting in each of these threads.
  15. This may be the worst announcing I have ever heard. Completely telegraphed the Mikey upset. I guess this was his first big upset.
  16. El-P, you have to admit that criticizing anything without being informed isn't endearing. That doesn't mean you can't discuss and criticize anything you want. It just means to be prepared to hear about it when you do.
  17. We weren't the only ones that didn't like the alcoholic storyline. And this board isn't a monolith.
  18. Not that I expect Jericho to do interviews pointing out how bad his comeback has been, but this reeks of a guy in denial: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport...icle4330059.ece
  19. These guys are so annoying.
  20. I like Terry Funk, but I haven't cared for his promos in '94. He tends to go on tangents that don't really have a point. He finally mentions that he's bringing Dory in, and that they're going to take on Public Enemy. Again, not sure why they did an Arn turn when Arn wasn't going to come back and get his comeuppance or anything.
  21. They were capitalizing on the fact that a huge portion of the fanbase thought it was the Road Warriors and that they had jumped to the WWF.
  22. Last few minutes and WOW, what a finish. Vrij's kick made quite thud. Weird to see Naruse get up so quickly after something that loud.
