  1. I thought I'd come back to this. Shawn during this time period was a heel. The Jesusing up comeback is a latter day Michaels thing. At this point, he controlled most of his matches, but was content to sit in a chinlock more than is remembered. I do think Michaels and Steamboat are similar wrestlers, but I also think 1994 Steamboat was a better wrestler than 1994 Michaels. The biggest reason is that Shawn working heel just didn't have the aggression to go with the excitement, and his stuff didn't look crisp next to the stuff Steamboat did. The ladder match - Shawn's signature match of '94 - is the exception to that, but he is also working with a weapon. I'm not someone who's afraid to criticize Steamboat. Steamboat didn't have a ton of offense and didn't always work matches that fit the storyline. But Steamboat's stuff just looked much better than Shawn's.
  2. Agreed. If someone wants to make a pro-Rey argument, the best one is not to argue that he's clean. It's to argue that WWE is leveraging the wellness program to punish him for political reasons, in ways that they would not be doing if the working relationship wasn't strained. The way John Laurinitis communicated the suspension to him shows that they are getting pleasure out of this. It's all an attempt to reduce any leverage he has when he is ready to negotiate a new contract. The wellness program hits him from two sides. It makes him more of a flight risk and someone they can't build around long term, and also, these headlines have a way of eventually hurting someone whose primary drawing power is among children.
  3. He did the act really well, but Ric Flair is possibly the most derivative wrestler in history.
  4. Goodhelmet started doing MOTY sets in 2005.
  5. Atlantis/Emilio from 8/11/92 has Emilio targeting Atlantis' arm starting in the first fall, and it continues throughout the match, with Atlantis rallying support for a big comeback. In that case, I would say that is what the match is built around. That match is not without its flaws, but the parts that are done well are done really, really well.
  6. I think Val's point was that a Crash Holly quarter hour on RAW would outdraw a Goldberg quarter hour on Nitro in 1999, which is true. Therefore, because Crash drew higher television ratings, he is the bigger star. Not defending him, but I think that's where he's coming from.
  7. This is why I was hesitant to respond to that thread. Because there is no answer I can provide that is anything but subjective, and it'll turn Bret/Owen into a five-page thread about Shawn. The Internet has enough of those.
  8. So how does this set him apart from Michaels? Bolded parts. I'll also add that Michaels matches weren't really laid out with lots of quick pins Steamboat-style during this time.
  9. Yes ... and they could still run more house shows.
  10. I really think airing Raw live each week during a monopoly is a massive waste of money and resources. It would force them to do more long-term planning if they just did one Raw taping between each PPV, plus they could probably run more house shows because they could re-route the entire travel schedule.
  11. Why can't WWE book Brock Lesnar like the state constitution voting is being booked? They are doing a great job of building heat on the heels by building the undefeated streak to add amendments to multiple state constitutions. National polls have acted as great teased comebacks, to show that the babyface isn't quite out of the fight. Eventually, this feud will be settled at the judicial Wrestlemania known as the Supreme Court, but even there, there has still been a significant amount of doubt over the outcome. Dan Savage as the edgy babyface has worked really well, and Tony Perkins and NOM have been on fire as heels. Even CM Punk was caught participating in the angle. This is clearly pro wrestling at its finest. This is not really a laughing matter unfortunately, as it affects real people with real lives, but what kind of people are we when we can no longer use humor to deal with our problems?

    Brock is back

But why did Heyman turn on him at Survivor Series '02 if they're such good friends?
  13. I don't think it's a wise idea for her to break into wrestling considering that her dad is a lunatic. Nor do I think she'll ever be treated fairly. Even if she is good, her accomplishments will be seen as nepotism. If she is disappointing, the criticism will be ten times as harsh. If she's green early on, she'll have the label forever. Some names can be carried over at a second generation level. Being Ric Flair's daughter is an unfair starting point. Dustin Rhodes was a good worker, and look at all the unwarranted crap about him in 1991. Erik Watts later became decent (supposedly), but could never shed the label.
  14. Does anyone else look at F4W through an RSS reader, and if so, do you also get every update they make 2-3 times spread out over a few hours?
  15. Understand that part. It was just the quality of this match, with the turn on top of it, felt like a ton of shortcuts. It's similar to how some of the old timers used to think Memphis wasn't pro wrestling, it was a parody of pro wrestling. I hope that makes sense.
  16. They had a great run and it ended at exactly the right time. It will be really cool when we do yearbooks from 1984 forward that fill in gaps for those years. Then we can watch the entire rivalry spill to different territories and also view it in the context of everything else happening in the wrestling world from start to finish. 1984 - 1987 should be really kind, and 1990 will have some highlights too.
  17. Picking up where the Kobashi match left off, Taue goes right after Hansen's injured ribs. This is a good match, but Taue doesn't have enough variety in his offense. Then again, how many different things can one really do to work over ribs? It doesn't exactly lend itself to variety like knee, arm or neck work does. So Taue, who is limited to begin with, is mostly punching and kicking, with some occasional bigger moves mixed in. Hansen's performance within the match is far better than the match as a whole. He is absolutely great in this. I made the wounded animal analogy in the Kobashi match, but it really applies far more here. The match lacks heat though, and Taue's win seems like a fluke because of Hansen's pre-match injury, more than it does that Taue deserved to win because he was the better wrestler. The Kobashi match did a far better job of accomplishing something I cared about and believed to mean something with the result. So to answer jdw's question from a few months ago: No. I do not want all wrestling to look like this.
  18. Definitely a good match, but something kept it from getting to the next level. Kobashi just came off the Hansen win and gave an awful lot to Akiyama. I prefer the Kawada matches, as Akiyama gets a few hope spots and looks good, but Kawada leaves and clearly looks like the better guy. I do like how the moonsault is being put over strong in this Carnival, though.
  19. Great match that tells a hell of a story! Hansen tries wrestling Kobashi at the beginning before losing his patience and taking the match outside, where he pelts him with a chair and throws him into a table. Eventually, Kobashi gains an opening when Hansen injures his ribs and goes after it with gusto -- throwing boxing style punches and deadlifting him for a vertical suplex. Hansen fights back like a wounded animal, throwing occasional bombs but not being able to fully capitalize when he does. Every move he executes on Kobashi takes just as much out of him. About 25 minutes in, he finally nails the lariat, but again, can't cover. Kobashi ends up getting the pin after two moonsaults, and we have a fantastic post-match celebration. The crowd seems to be treating him like he's "arrived", as this is the biggest singles win of his career.
  20. Gene does a control center for Spring Stampede with both Flair and Steamboat available by satellite. Both Flair and Steamboat are great in this. I wish Hogan hadn't muddied up the build, because both guys are so good in these segments. Later in the show, Steamboat comes out to watch Flair's match, as Flair requested. Flair comes out in a suit and says he'll have the match in his suit, that he doesn't need to wear his ring gear for such an easy match. He makes easy work of the jobber, but refuses to release the figure four after the match while pointing at Steamboat. Steamboat comes in to break it up and the ring fills with people to keep them apart. Flair slaps Steamboat and gloats while standing behind security. I LOVED this segment.
  21. Video of some of Muta's highlights in WCW and New Japan with some really comedic sound effects mixed in.
  22. Cactus appears for the first time without his ear and does a good promo. Crowds that cheer on queue are really annoying. Bischoff's production instincts are terrible.
  23. Flair talks about his history with Ricky Steamboat in Chicago to hype Spring Stampede and is entirely focused on Steamboat. He calls him the second greatest wrestler alive, but unfortunately for him, he'll have to face the best wrestler alive at Spring Stampede. Finally, a promo where the whole build isn't playing second fiddle to Hogan.
  24. The Rock & Rolls are grateful for all the support they've gotten and are ready to move on to new challenges. We get Cornette and the Bodies coming out of the SMW Board of Directors meeting, and it looks like the decision stands. The SMW Board of Directors apparently meets in a high school classroom. They are not happy, obviously. Cornette, dressed in Brother Love colors, does a swan song promo about why he hated the Rock & Roll Express so much for so long. This is one of Cornette's best ever. He concedes defeat after a decade of fighting the Rock & Rolls, while at the same time saying somehow, some way, one day there will be another day. And in one of my favorite wrestling moments ever, the Bodies walk away from Cornette while "Famous Final Scene" plays. This is probably my favorite SMW segment.
