[1993-04-02-AJW-Dream Slam I] Akira Hokuto vs Shinobu Kandori
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1993
Magnificent. This is a seriously incredible match, one of my favorites ever, and one that is brilliantly crafted. It is all about Hokuto's struggle to put her money where her mouth is when she has an opponent who is determined to destroy her. They play off of Hokuto's history of serious injuries big time, and while there is less action than your typical high end AJW match in 1993, the action that is there is very good and is way more meaningful than usual, and the selling and drama is so otherworldly that the match would have suffered with a faster pace. If anything, that the match is so basic is one of the most beautiful things about it. The drama is created through personality, history and selling. Kandori tries to rip Hokuto's arm completely off of her body, drive her head through a table with a tombstone (which is MADE by the camera shot of the dented table), and take every single resource she has, and Hokuto has to find a way to come back with whatever she can muster. Hokuto's face is so bloody that it looks like she's a masked wrestler at times. But her body language is so amazing and her selling is so demonstrative that the match still conveys the story really well. At times, this match feels more like a fight scene in a movie than a wrestling match because of all the great camera work and facial expressions. I think this match stands fine on its own, but I could see someone going in cold and not quite getting it. I loved it without having seen anything else, but I was at least familiar with Hokuto's history of injuries and setbacks. Without that knowledge, this match would likely miss something, so I think earlier yearbooks will elevate this match even more. I find new things to appreciate about this every time I watch it though. One of the greatest wrestling matches that ever happened.- 21 replies

End the giant swing already! Good Lord. That said, great match, but not quite as good as the January match in JWP for me, but Takako and partner vs Ozaki and partner in 1993 seems to be a promise of an excellent match. All the action and nearfalls you'd expect from the time period.

#30 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Jun Akiyama vs Steve Williams & Johnny Ace (AJPW 11/16/96) -- 30 minute draw that tells a nice story of Doc & Ace trying to isolate Misawa on the outside while taking out Akiyama on the inside. #29 - Katsumi Usuda & Takeshi Ono vs Daisuke Ikeda & Alexander Otsuka (BattlARTS 12/25/96) -- Shooty matwork and stiff wrestling mixed in pro wrestling moves like powerbombs. Great match. #28 - Rey Misterio Jr vs Ultimo Dragon (WCW World War 3 11/24/96) -- Ultimo Dragon is fantastic in this one. You may have heard it called a one-sided match, which I don't see at all. #27 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Jun Akiyama vs Steve Williams & Johnny Ace (AJPW 06/07/96) -- Excellent match that from a story and action standpoint sets up many interesting things that pay off throughout the year. #26 - Dynamite Kansai & Kanako Motoya vs Mayumi Ozaki & Reiko Amano (JWP 06/16/96) -- Matwork heavy Joshi match in a relatively quiet year. #25 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Jun Akiyama vs Steve Williams & Johnny Ace (AJPW 09/05/96) -- The best performance you'll ever see from Johnny Ace, as he and Doc win the tag titles. #24 - Rey Misterio Jr & Ultimo Dragon vs Heavy Metal & Psicosis (World Wrestling Peace Festival 06/01/96) -- Has a rhythm and creativity that every spotfest should of comedy, bumping and some great moves. #23 - Aja Kong vs Kyoko Inoue (AJW 08/30/96) -- Not a world title match, but it sure feels like one. Paced really well, and a bit of a lost classic. #22 - Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue vs Steve Williams & Johnny Ace (AJPW 11/22/96) -- Kawada puts on quite the show, selling knee damage beautifully, and waking up an anemic crowd. #21 - Kenta Kobashi vs Akira Taue (AJPW 07/24/96) -- Kobashi wins the Triple Crown in a fantastic match with some great counter wrestling between the big spots.

Inspired by BIG DADDY BRUNO BEEFCAKE and SAILOR MOSES in the Bix thread, I thought using this thread to create a list of other fun wrestling names that don't exist. They can play off of existing names or be entirely your own creation. For example: Slaughterhouse Stevens -- Headlined several MSG shows in the 70s before retiring to live with his family in Vermont. Finishing move was The Tenderizer. Have fun.

Sign in crowd: "Cry Baby Brian - He's Always Fallen And Can't Get Up" Okay match I suppose, but it really runs together with everything else involving these guys. This was taped before the title change. Steamboat pins Pillman to secure the win for his team.

Last few minutes only. Eaton wins the TV title. Awesome finish, as Mark Curtis leapfrogs both guys to avoid a ref bump and Cornette hits Horner with the racket behind the ref's back.

[1993-03-27-SMW-TV] Interview: Arn Anderson & Rock & Roll Express
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Arn: "The more I get hurt, the more I like it. Some girl in St. Louis instilled that in me one night." Morton: "Whoa." -
Wow. They are in the dark, as Mantell says he is going to use his pre-med, pre-law and pre-psychiatry backgrounds to try to understand Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan's occupation is Master of the Wrestling Universe, and he is holding a flashlight to his face saying he is being followed. He then walks through all the gimmick matches in which he'll be facing Brian Lee on upcoming house shows, and makes them all sound pretty maniacal. Great stuff.

Ron Wright has sent Tony Anthony to train for the upcoming chain match against Tracy Smothers in New York City (the woods, actually). He takes a sack of flour, then a melon, and starts hitting them both with a chain. Then he pulls out a pineapple, because he hears Smothers likes his women a little bushy (Um ...)

[1993-03-27-WCW-Worldwide] Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas vs Hollywood Blonds
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
The best match of the series. The Blondes win the tag titles when Pillman pins Steamboat. The match had almost no heat to begin with, but the crowd was pretty insane by the end. They used every trick they could think of to have a good match, to a point where it may have even been a little overdone, but it's hard to fault this effort. The use of the towel when they were working over Douglas was amusing, because the fans were screaming so loudly over a towel. The build to the hot tag is as good as any hot tag build you'll ever see. I especially enjoyed Austin trying to replicate Douglas' partner-assisted slingshot from the apron to the ring spot that Douglas would always do and missing. Also enjoyed the Rocket Launcher backfiring. The series isn't an all-time classic series like it's been hyped to be in some cases, but it is a very good series, bookended by the best two matches (the first one at the Clash, and then the title change). -
Studio match that is 90% bullshit and awesome. Christopher stalls and stalls (and stalls), and when Lawler uses closed fists, he threatens to leave the match if he doesn't stop, and even does a promo about it mid-match because he's so upset. He then starts playing hide the non-existent foreign object. Lawler is getting the upper hand when the Harlem Knights (Men on a Mission in a previous gimmick which looks a lot like the Harlem Heat gimmick) run in and attack Lawler. They are doing a promo calling themselves the new kings of Memphis when Jeff Jarrett runs out to get a piece of Christopher. Typically fun USWA.

[1993-03-27-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Awesome awesome awesome. I know they've had better matches, but this is a worthy addition to the feud and deserves plenty of praise too. Misawa is just amazing in '93, probably my pick for Most Outstanding Wrestler at this point. The nearfalls are interesting to watch in hindsight, because I know Kawada isn't winning anything, but there's still that small bit of doubt where I wonder if he beat Misawa and it was forgotten about because they built up the pin attempt so well. That's a huge credit to these guys. This is an all action match, a faster pace than any of their other singles matches I've seen, and ... yet another low-end MOTYC.- 15 replies

[1993-03-22-WWF-Raw] Michael Landon Awards / Andre the Giant tribute
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
This is an AMAZING video with "A Whole New World" playing in the background the whole time as they show random celebrities being honored. Hulk Hogan does a speech in full wrestling promo mode complaining about the lack of food at his table, which is funny. Then we get a video about how wonderful and charitable the WWF is, of random wrestlers posing with children. Tatanka wants you to stay away from drugs. The Nasty Boys hate smoking. Randy Savage wants you to stay in school and off drugs. To close things off of that section of this, we get Vince's smiling face while soft piano music plays. Hogan then does a speech extolling the virtues of Vince McMahon, calling him "the true champion of children". Then Vince does a speech. You don't think the WWF is trying to rebuild their public image, do you? Then we switch to a nice Andre video tribute that's very well done. -
[1993-03-21-NJPW-Hyper Battle] Jushin Liger vs Dean Malenko

These two typically have good matches and not great ones. This falls into that category. Liger finishes with a rana pinning combo. -

Arn Anderson! He does an excellent promo as a segue from the Sullivan/Kanemura angle to the feud with Cornette and the Bodies.
