This is a total Psicosis and Juventud show, as Volador and El Mexicano seem to be off on timing -- at least for most of the match -- and have a few miscues. There are times where it takes forever to set up a spot, and Psicosis will sell it like the other guy has him stuck somewhere and he can't move to cover up for the problem. Both Juventud and Psicosis also put forth some tremendous dives, and Psicosis takes a ridiculous somersault bump off of a missile dropkick while in Doomsday Device position. There are also some Psicosis high spots that I've never seen before in any other context that blew my mind. These two should have teamed full time in WCW. Even as an enhancement team, they would have made other guys look great. Great match in spite of some rough patches thanks to Juventud and even more so Psicosis.

[1996-01-06-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13 feud recap

The Lawler/Rich match is the following week.- 10 replies

This had a lot more wrestling than I thought, and really I can't help but compare this in my head to the early 00s Hardys TLC matches. It's like them, but with better wrestling, more impressive spots, a better match layout that keeps everyone useful and a stronger heel/face structure. Other than that ... Anyway, some really inventive spots and daredevil moves, but the pleasant surprise was that this doesn't forget that it's a wrestling match either. I don't know that it's my cup of tea, but I can definitely give the guys involved credit for doing something a little more thoughtful than most matches of this style. Everyone pulls their weight and this deserves the praise it gets.

[1996-01-06-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13

This match starts as a crazy brawl, but is actually way better when it turns into a wrestling match, since these two are better than that. Cool to see Joshi paced like this, as it's not the typical style at all. Really good battle of the bulls mixed in with some great suplexes, almost like a female version of a Steve Williams/Terry Gordy match.

[1996-01-08-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage vs Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
This is a really good match! All four guys seem fired up and having fun and pull out all the stops, with Flair even letting Hogan pull his trunks down on live TV! I love the dual figure fours and assisted abdominal stretch spots in any tag match, and it's well done here. There's nothing groundbreaking, but this is a better match than you'd think considering the timeframe. Arn also does one of the better reactions to the Hulk up of anyone this side of Lanny Poffo. The Giant singlehandedly lays out both Hogan and Savage after the match, which cracks me up when I think about the story of Vince making fun of how WCW used the guy.- 14 replies

The WWF is now poking fun at WCW's steroid policy. Yes.

[1996-01-08-WWF-Raw] Brother Love: Ted DiBiase & The Ringmaster
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
So DiBiase isn't really hateable enough to be a good manager. Steve Austin does a completely different style of promo than we have come to expect of him, and says "man" a whole, whole lot! -
Everyone should be thrilled to know that Shawn Michaels is in fact NOT retiring, despite doctors advising him to do so.

[1996-01-06-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13 feud recap
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Terrific video package narrated by Lance Russell and Dave Brown. Various clips of great brawling involving the Rock & Rolls and Tracy Smothers & Jesse James Armstrong in some cases, but mostly PG-13 and Doug Gilbert & Tommy Rich. Some clips are from Mid South Coliseum, and some are from the Memphis studio. Ether, handcuffs, old ladies, head shaving, piledrivers through tables ... you name it. Cool stuff to see in the context of 1996. It's all capped off by a Rich/Gilbert promo interrupted by Tracy Smothers and Jesse James Armstrong, followed by PG-13 interrupting, and you can guess what happens from here. The PG-13 10 second promo in front of a green screen while JC Ice wears an American flag tophat is awesome!- 10 replies

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Public Enemy vs The Gangstas
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
The "You'll be back" chant cracked me up, and really, if Shane Douglas and Sabu returned, what reason was there to think PE wouldn't? I love that New Jack got a pie to the face and stopped to taste it, even if his pre-match promo burying Harlem Heat and Sherri made absolutely no sense. So yeah, this is exactly what you'd expect it to be -- lots of weapon shots and blood. Wrestling moves like Mustafa Saed's sunset flip and spinning toehold look kinda silly in this context, to be honest. Why even bother? -
The point being sold big time on commentary seems to be that Stevie held his own with Sabu when no one would have expected it. Decent-ish match, and one that probably accomplished its goal to get Stevie over as a wrestler who can do more than comedy just fine. I could have done without the Blue Meanie spots, as I'm not sure what purpose he served, but whatever.

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Raven, Beulah and Tommy Dreamer
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Stevie Richards comparing himself favorably to the American Males is funny stuff. Raven attacking Stevie Richards when Beulah tells him she's pregnant is a great instant reaction. Fun angle, but wow is Raven bad. His punch selling is terrible and he's calling spots on camera, which says something considering that ECW does not have great production values which would make it difficult to hide that. Is this the first pregnancy angle in wrestling?- 19 replies

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Nobuhiko Takada vs Keiji Muto
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
We decided to clip this since the match was a huge draw, but has a bit of a bad rep for Muto's laziness, so it's hard to make any huge judgments here, but this isn't a terrible stretch of wrestling by any means. They have the crowd in the palm of their hands, so they can pretty much do whatever they want. But sadly, that looks to be exactly what they do. Too bad, they probably could have delivered a classic had they wanted.- 13 replies

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Vader vs Antonio Inoki
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
The harpsichord player in the pre-match is amazing, and it's kind of hard not to get sucked into the aura of Inoki just by watching how much people love him. It's amazing to me that he was still using his disco entrance music in 1996 after all those years. Anyway, this is a war. Even the cameraman seems startled by Vader's slap at the beginning of the match. This is famous for the German suplex spot, which is awesome, but there is lots to love about this match aside from that. Inoki gives an inspired performance. I love his apron desperation sleeper. Vader is always great when there is an elevated ramp nearby of course, taking a nice backdrop into the ring, and both guys are a bloody mess. Fantastic match. I'm interested in making a comp to the Shawn match at Summerslam, as Shawn is younger and way less limited than Inoki. We'll see how that goes.- 24 replies

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Shinya Hashimoto vs Kazuo Yamazaki
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Hashimoto kicks are one of the best things about watching wrestling. I love him casually tossing Yamazaki aside and taking a powder just to give his arm a rest for a second. But may God have mercy on Hashimoto's arm, because Yamazaki will have none. The arm wringer looks really painful because of all the struggle just to apply the move, and Hash's body being turned away from Yamazaki, which is not normally the way this hold is applied, makes it look even more brutal. The arm wringer is kind of Yamazaki's ace in the hole as the match continues, as he keeps going back to it anytime Hashimoto starts giving him more than he can handle. Eventually, it catches up and Hash gives him a dose of his own medicine. Super heated big feeling match. Typically great looking strikes, kicks and elbows from both, and I hope these two have a longer match out there somewhere that I just haven't seen.- 27 replies

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Jushin Liger vs Koji Kanemoto
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
So we know the story with juniors and dome shows, but this match was pretty good and would have had way more heat in a smaller arena. No typical juniors feeling out period, as they started tearing into each other right away. Kanemoto dominates most of the match early on, working over Liger's knee, while Liger is pretty helpless. The crowd starts to come slightly alive when it's obvious they're building to the finish. Liger's release German is awesome, although obviously it's at best the second best German suplex on this show. Kanemoto is good here, but he can't compare to Liger, who between his selling and the offense he busts out to finally put away Kanemoto is on another level.- 18 replies

As an 80s fan, I do still notice when Flair and Hogan are in the same ring, although it's a little sad and weird that it eventually became commonplace to see them around each other when Flair/Hogan was such a dream match for so long. Lots of planted Hogan merchandise around the ring, as this was the height of astroturf Hogan fan support. Anyway, this match is somewhat heated and fun, but kind of rushed. I have to ask if Flair wearing Hogan's colors is breaking some kind of secret wrestler's code? Also, the scene at the end of all the Horsemen begging off from Hogan at the same time is ridiculous. Bischoff was a TERRIBLE announcer who only knew how to speak in platitudes, and yes, I realize the irony of that sentence.

Fun concept that would have worn out its welcome had it ever happened again, as it was WWF cheese at its best/worst. Good action though, and Vince and Lawler were having way too much fun on commentary.

Between that, the Ferrari analogy with Johnny Ace and the tag match at Greed, Luger was on quite the trip in early '01.

So which was the best makeshift Marcus Bagwell babyface tag team of the 90s: Stars and Stripes, The American Males, or the team with Scorpio that should have had a name and didn't? Remember when it seemed like Bagwell had a future and was decent-good in the ring? Yeah, the neck injury happened, but he really should have come back from that a bigger star than ever. Sadly, the ill-advised heel turn killed that. But I think more than anything, he's yet another casualty of the late 90s WCW drug scene and party culture that seemed to chew up and spit out a lot of guys that were around at that time.

Yes, and if you compare Hogan gates, he smokes DiBiase too.
