  1. Great intro to Michinoku Pro on this set! There are quite a few matches that are better, but this is a good way to get familiar with some of the big players. No Togo and no Yakushiji, but most of the rest of the best guys are here. This style is so much fun to watch, and it's been a long time since I've really watched it, so while I never forgot how good it is, my appreciation is definitely renewed. The crowd is pretty quiet early on and once the fans figure out the style, the building is super-heated. There is a great moment where Super Delphin is trying to do a dive and Taka is standing on the apron in his way and he does this dramatic "Move!" gesture that gets a huge laugh. Delphin also does a Rick Rude-like atomic drop sell and takes a bump into the crowd at one point where he has a humorous interaction with a female fan. There is an incredible dive train, with Sasuke, Tiger Mask and Shiryu all doing a different style and all looking great. Shiryu in particular gets some amazing hang time. Delphin and Shiryu are in there for quite a while and deliver some of the best nearfalls you'll ever see. All the athleticism and showmanship mix together so well, and I start to wonder if this is the greatest wrestling style there is. What makes this style great is not just the pacing though, it's also that the wrestlers are really in tune with their audience and know when to pause for dramatic effect. Can't wait to watch more, including some of the bigger matches that I haven't seen.
  2. Fast paced without being forced, heated, and even pretty snug. At this point, my MOTY. A pretty breathtaking pace, and El Dandy and Negro Casas have some really awesome stuff when they're in. They are great for small touches. For example, at point, they take it to the mat and Casas is on his back and sits up and Dandy immediately elbows him right in the face. Really, the match is full of legends, but Negro Casas and El Dandy are the biggest standouts for me. Dandy and Santo both have some spectacular dives, and the match is laid out in a way where the guys involved in the finish are the most visible on every fall, which leads to significant pops for every finish.
  3. This crowd sounds like an old Crockett crowd, which is awesome. Lots of good power moves. Rick Steiner's clotheslines are out of this world. Super stiff and high impact. Jim Ross would have an aneurysm at the broadcast booth, and I kinda wish he was calling this. Not sure what the logic was in jobbing the Steiners their first night in, but still a fun match.
  4. Pillman shows up at ringside during a Giant/Duggan match and wreaks havoc. Eric Bischoff leaves the announce booth to make sure he gets thrown out of the building.
  5. "KE-nny-LOG-gins-SAID-it-BEST, this is it!" This is a Scheme Gene Geriatric Control Center, and the first line was definitely funny. Scheme Gene has a special announcement for the Huckster vs Nacho Man match at Wrestlemania: No handcuffs or ladies shoes are allowed at ringside. Then we get really stupid training videos of both guys.
  6. I know some have been down on them at times, but I really loved these training videos. This is where Bret made the controversial comment that there are no real tough Mexican wrestlers.
  7. Great segment with Goldust slapping Piper pretty hard after coming on to him for a few minutes and Piper finally slapping him back. The Backlot Brawl at Wrestlemania was set up here.
  8. DDP looks as scuzzy as I've ever seen a human being look in my life. Luger wins the TV title, as Marc Mero is on his way to the WWF. Just the last few minutes, but they're really heated.
  9. Yeah, I'm not sure Bischoff was a guy who understood wrestling well enough to know how to properly get over a heel at the announce booth. At the time, he was smart enough to leave the nuts and bolts of his vision to people who knew how to execute, and eventually, thank God he realized Schiavone was a better choice on commentary.
  10. This was the first time I had actually seen all of this. Wow. Great match (Really) and great post-match. Of course, the post-match is legendary with the "New York, New York" sendoff, but the Whipwreck respect moment really worked well also. As an overall presentation, this was incredible, and each piece stood out in a positive way on its own. I will eventually come back to this and talk about it in more detail.
  11. Easily the best of the lucha matches in ECW, and one of my favorite matches of theirs. They give them plenty of time to deliver a great match, and of course the highlight is Juventud powerbombing Rey on the hood of a car outside the arena. I will say that I sometimes get the feeling watching these matches now that Rey is too dominant in them, plus he pretty much never loses, so that does take some of the suspense out. But I can also understand, since Rey's offense is one of the things that makes these guys different, so they need to showcase it. Still, I'd like to see Juventud and Psicosis allowed to be a little more dominant in these matches sometimes.
  12. Another Douglas/Pillman altercation. Paul E. sure did a great job building to a match that he knew would never happen.
  13. Another great Pillman angle, this time with Brian Pillman trolling him at ringside and Douglas trying to take the high road at first. Douglas goes to hit Pillman, and Pillman throws a kid in front of him. Pillman then gets escorted out of the building by security and Pillman stays in the ring trying to call him out and security has to throw Douglas out. That section went too long but still good. This somehow leads to Bill Alfonso and Todd Gordon having a brawl, Taz attacking Todd Gordon, and then Bam Bam Bigelow coming out for the save. I don't know about all the stuff at the end, but the Pillman stuff was once again well done.
  14. So PG-13 lost a Loser Leaves Town match to Doug Gilbert and Tommy Rich, so they have to leave the USWA. They air a taped message of them saying goodbye to the fans. Something tells me we haven't seen the last of PG-13. It's funny seeing Sid at the announce booth in a suit playing it straight. How did he end up leaving the WWF anyway? This is the first real promotional departure in a year full of them.
  15. Wow. Stevie Richards and the Blue Meanie introduce themselves as the Fabulous Ones. "You may remember us from our days in Memphis." That was a riot! The subsequent Blue Meanie/Bubba Ray miming and beatboxing is great too. And of course, Brian Pillman. There's a scene of him in a limo (wearing tie-dye pants) with his attorney reviewing his contract. "Early termination? That's an extreme concept." And then Brian is sitting naked on his couch complaining about how Eric Bischoff "stripped him of everything".
  16. Pillman gets into a fight with a human-sized pencil to show his disdain for bookers. Ridiculous, but humorous.
  17. The stuff with the Billionaire Ted quotes is ridiculous. So he's made some controversial statements. Do wrestling fans really care? However, it's all worth it for one brief clip of the host asking the Nacho Man where the Huckster is. The camera pans to an empty black and white arena where he's saying, "Somebody help me, brother! I helped a lady handcuff me and I can't get out!" If you saw Nitro the previous week where Liz fumbled the handcuffs and Hogan had to handcuff himself to the ring, only for the WCW production wizards to zoom in on him doing so, this was hilarious. Nacho Man's response? "Um, he's a little tied up right now."
  18. Yet another creepy video from the boiler room to hype the debut of Mankind.
  19. This is pretty racy by WWF standards at the time. Goldust talks about how watching Piper's Pit was the source of many teenage fantasies, and that he was hung on every word from Piper's luscious lips. He also says he spent many hours of quality time alone contemplating the grapes of wrath beyond Piper's skirt. He says he got quite the rise out of They Live. He then starts playing the bagpipe while making orgasm noises. That this aired after Shawn Michaels dancing in the ring with a little girl to celebrate a win shows the identity crisis the WWF was having at the time.
  20. Terrific match. Interesting how much these guys sell for each other compared to other guys on the roster, as Kid totally dominates about 80% of this match and Shawn sells his ass off for him. I can't think of too many people that got that much offense in on Shawn around this time. But it shows how far being willing to sell for a heel can go in adding to a match. Worth watching.
  21. Match goes off the air before the finish, which aired on the 3/9 Pro show. Both are spliced together here. Fun as always, but it's here I realize every single Flair/Sting match is the exact same sequences in slightly different order. Really bad finish, as Luger runs in and purposely gets Sting DQ'd and Sting isn't happy about it, but he keeps teaming with him of course. It's like they were doing a parody of Luger (all the turns) and Sting (being overly trusting) at the same time during this run.
  22. Kind of a disappointing match. Really short first two falls and lots of pauses between some of the sequences that broke the flow. On the plus side, Psicosis actually won a match against Rey! I can't say I've ever seen that happen before. The chairfight teases after the match were better than the match itself.
  23. Excellent match in front of a super-hot crowd that really digs Koshinaka's deliberate pro wrestling counters to Takada's more shooty moves. I do eventually want to do a full review of matches like this, and I'll eventually come back to it, but this was very good. While it aired on NJ TV, it appears to have taken place on a UWFI show.

I think the Pillman angle at Cyberslam was the best non-wrestling moment of the month, although Flair had a few promos that were much better than Pillman's, only the angle wasn't as good. The Billionaire Ted skits continue to be very, very petty, even when they manage to be funny on occasion. I'm also ready for some All Japan! Every month from here forward should have plenty. This is very easy to watch in large doses without getting burned out because of the variety.
  25. Finally, a funny skit! The chyron reads "Huckster and Nacho Man: Recently injured by ladies shoe". At another point, Hogan goes to attack Larry Fling with a chair. Larry Fling holds up a high heel and the Huckster immediately backs down. The Nacho Man also says the reason people wear the Huckster's merchandise is because they give it out for free to people at ringside in exchange for a promise that they'll be shown on TV.
