  1. This was pretty good, better than I remembered for sure, but it's just the last few minutes.
  2. To be honest, the pop for Warrior's return isn't as significant as it should be, considering the hype and how long he was gone. I don't know whether to blame that on Warrior or the typically terrible Anaheim crowd. This is notable for a few things: * Hunter getting squashed and gaining political favor for not complaining about the nature of the match * Sable's debut
  3. Typically good, high-energy match between these two, and another strong title defense for Toyota. I think the wrestling style these two have is so similar that it keeps the matches from hitting the next level sometimes, though. I much prefer Toyota opposite someone like Kong, Nakano, Sakegawa, etc.
  4. Their usual great match. I'm not sure how this compares to their other singles matches, but that will be an interesting comparison to make as more yearbooks are released. I do prefer Misawa/Kawada to Misawa/Kobashi as a feud, and the best matches are better. But I do feel like there are some things Misawa/Kobashi as a rivalry has that the Kawada feud doesn't, for better or worse, and I have no idea how to properly verbalize that at the moment.
  5. Classic All Japan, in the sense that they start building for the powerbomb within the first 10 minutes and it gets teased repeatedly, to a point where when it finally happens, the place explodes. Really good match. They have some other singles matches that I like better, but this one is excellent too.
  6. Talk about inventive cheating. This match is worth seeing just to see Flair find all sorts of new ways to break rules. This is built almost entirely around low blows, choking, eye pokes, etc., but it's kinda well done. The Giant does a dive off the top rope and takes a Michaels bump over the top rope to the floor also.
  7. Bischoff: "Did you know that Tony Schiavone's real first name is Noah?" I have no idea what made that come up. Anyway, I've talked about this match recently, but it's hilarious for Luger wrestling like a face when Sting is looking and like a heel when he's not. Sting and Bagwell work some crazy-speed sequences and Luger is a riot, being the only guy who's not wrestling like a sportsman, going crazy on Bagwell in a scene you kinda have to see to believe. The post-match is fun too, with Luger celebrating like he's won the Superbowl.
  8. Flair does a typical great promo, and this appears to be the first time that Woman comes on to Mean Gene, a staple for the next little while.
  9. Okay match. Pretty stiff, and I wonder if this is what made Flair remove his name from the format when he was supposed to have a match with Finlay.
  10. Cheesy video to "You Start The Fire", but I used to love these things and wish we saw more of them now.
  11. Really good TV match. Snow was much better than his push. I wonder if Bret realizes he came across as kind of an ass in the Wrestlemania XII build in the sense that Shawn was very respectful of Bret in the buildup and Bret wasn't so much.
  12. Joined in progress. This is the Road Warriors in their element, but this isn't particularly good brawling. Using a broom as a weapon? Seriously? Did I really used to like this match? The finish is great though, with Luger being interrupted from fixing his hair and he and Stevie Ray beating up Animal. Luger screams at Animal: "You ruined by sheam!" Hilarious. This is one of the first times it was obvious Booker T had something special.
  13. Awesomely stiff and kinda shocking at times in its brutality. The crowd doesn't really know what to make of it. You do wish they had been able to go to the 30-minute draw as planned before Regal's nose got all bloody, as it might have then gone from a very good match to a great one.
  14. Otani is finally able to quit while he's ahead, and gets a big win, taking the cruiserweight title. Excellent match that I remembered being better than this, but still very good.
  15. Hasegawa is more of a mat wrestler than most of her contemporaries, which is a nice change of pace. Nice slow build to all the false finishes toward the end, and more focus on selling than usual. I like Hasegawa a lot, because she wrestles the Joshi style very well, but also seems like a more complete wrestler than almost anyone else from her era. Lots of struggle for the big moves, and they sell the big moves enough to give them time to get over. Toyota's insistence on doing moonsaults that never get even a slight pop is puzzling though.
  16. Chef Pillman spits in a salad, Shane Douglas hangs out with some actress from One Life To Live at a carnival, Missy Hyatt acts skanky with Sandman ("Mommy loves the way you dish out pain"), JT Smith acts Italian while the backdrop falls on his head and Raven does another lousy promo
  17. This is the nastiest and most heavy-handed of all the skits, with Billionaire Ted bragging about all the companies he has put out of business, and singing the praises of capitalism and a handful of billionaires running society. Complaints are made against him systematically putting every marketplace competitor out of business with predatory business practices. Yes, the WWF ran this skit. Where do we begin?
  18. Interesting angle, as Diesel opens a casket at ringside and he's laying inside with his eyes closed. Nice camera work.
  19. This is terrific. Bret starts laying in some cheapshots at Shawn about his dancing and overconfidence while Shawn talks about how every day in wrestling has been a learning experience. I like the low-key build.
  20. Tons of heat, just as you'd expect for a tag match at MSG two weeks before Wrestlemania with the participants in the top two matches. But kind of a weird match, as Undertaker and Diesel keep brawling away from the ring while Bret and Shawn lay on the mat. Really, and this proved true over several years, Undertaker and Shawn have way better chemistry than Bret and Shawn, as their 3 minutes or so going at it is great! This is also notable for Diesel cementing his heel turn, cracking Shawn on the back with a chair. I can kinda see why this got ****1/2 in the WON, because it's a super-hot crowd and there's a lot going on, but the contrast between the Undertaker/Diesel and Bret/Shawn stuff was too strong to make sense.
  21. Otani has Liger pinned, picks him up because he wants to suplex him again, and this time, Liger isn't able to kick out on his own, but he's positioned in the ropes. Otani's face tells it all. He blew it again, this time by not quitting while he was ahead. Liger is able to regroup and ends up taking the victory with the shotay. The entire match is really good, but it's the booking and the last few minutes that makes this great.
  22. He's billed as Mankind the Mutilator by Lance Russell, and he even calls himself that. Foley drops by the Memphis studio between ECW and the WWF, hyping a match against Lawler at Mid South Coliseum the following Monday night.
  23. Psicosis may have been top five in the world in a year where that meant a lot. In terms of making other guys look good and timing his bumps in a way to get a maximum crowd reaction, he was the second coming of Ric Flair. Plus I like the booking here, as he actually wins a match! This match is like a cleaned up version of the January one. It doesn't have the props that the January match did, but that is to its advantage, as it is a better wrestling match and is just as dramatic. I think I like this better than the more acclaimed Rey/Juventud match on the same show, but this was still a hell of a card. Ultraman is required to unmask here.
  24. Amazing first two falls, the best I've seen from these two, and even the third fall interference spots are really good and work well. Will come back and do a full review, as I'm incredibly tired right now.
