  1. Loss

    Matches From 2002

I believe this is the first and only singles match they've had against each other, and I agree that it was a fantastic match.
  2. I'm not sure Benoit ever had a GREAT match in WCW honestly, just tons of really good ones.
  3. Also tons of Flair in WCCW, and footage of his matches tends to do very well.
  4. They were both babyface champions in 2004 and can be compared quite easily then. Over the span of a career, it's a little closer. Benoit has the edge in consistency and Eddy Guerrero has had more "classic" matches. Year by year, I'd probably go this route. 2005 - Eddy 2004 - Eddy 2003 - Benoit 2002 - Eddy 2001 - Benoit 2000 - Benoit 1999 - Benoit 1998 - Eddy 1997 - Eddy 1996 - Eek ... very close call 1995 - Benoit 1994 - Benoit 1993 - Eddy I can't really comment back further than that. MAN, 1996 is a tough call and I have no idea which one I'd pick, especially when their best match against each other. If I look at second best match, I either have 03/20/96 Otani for Benoit or 06/12/96 Liger for Guerrero. I'm not even touching that one. So basically, of 12 years (excluding '96), I'd give Benoit the edge in 6 of them and Eddy the advantage in 6 of them. Both are great, obviously, but I feel if we're playing "what have you done for me lately?", Eddy has to get the edge. I'd like to see Benot work a match without any crossface attempts or German suplexes. I think he can do it, but I think he'd freshen his act up considerably if he eliminated both spots, since he's beaten them into the ground. I'd also like to see the belt get put back on Eddy yesterday. You owe it to yourself to get a set with the following matches on it. I think it could challenge your perspective: Eddy v Brock (No Way Out '04) Eddy v Angle (WM X) Eddy v Rey (SD 03/18/04) Eddy v Show (SD 04/15/04) Eddy v JBL (Judgment Day '04) Eddy v JBL (GAB '04) Eddy v JBL (SD 07/15/04) You get to see him work with five very different wrestlers with two gimmick matches thrown in at the end to boot. All of those smoke the WM main event for work.
  5. Just watched Flair/Morton (NWA Pro 05/17/86) and recommend that all of you who have the discs do the same. 15+ minutes are shown before the show goes off the air. I don't think I'd rank it here, since I don't know what type of finish they were building to, but if the last half of this match is as good as the first half (assuming the match went 30 minutes), then this is a classic with a dirtier, grittier feel than any of the Flair/Steamboat matches because they brought the hate. I know what was shown was better than any 15 minutes of Flair/Funk I've seen. Flair is not even really trying to defend his title here, but rather just torture Morton for embarrassing him on television by pinning him. Morton outwrestles Flair, Flair outbrawls Morton. Nice stuff. This is pretty basic work that gets its strength from timing, facial expressions and heat, but it doesn't get much better in any of those three categories. Worth a look.
  6. Every wrestler in the history of wrestling is repetitive. Anyway, I am dying to see the Eddy/Rey match from 06/05 Smackdown that a lot of people seem to have already forgotten happened, but also a lot of people whose opinions I value are saying it's the 2005 MOTY. And considering that I think Eddy was involved in at least 6 or 7 of the top 10 matches of 2004 while Benoit wasn't in any of them (I say that tentatively), I just don't see how they can be compared. Benoit had the match with Regal where he supposedly showed all his cards, but that had to be the first time he's done that since at least 2001.
  7. I wasn't being facetious, but I could have been far more clear in what I said. The point I was trying to make was that there are far more famous Americans and Americans with a footprint in history than there are Canadians. So the Canadians who do gain success, fame or notoriety are more remembered because there are fewer of them, "hero" or not. Perhaps the term I should have used was "celebrity", because a hero and a celebrity are obviously two totally different things.
  8. What prompted this was Dave Meltzer's comments, which I've included below, that totally baffle me because they're so ridiculous. Anyway, I pick Eddy Guerrero by a country mile and I'll explain why shortly, but here's what DM said:
  9. I thought about starting this thread a while back myself. I need to give my card more thought, but time permitting, I'll have this up soon.
  10. Maybe we take our heroes for granted in America because we have so many of them. You don't hear about many Canadian heroes - therefore, Bret Hart sticks out. It's the same thing as someone from your high school becoming a celebrity.
  11. Are you saying Hogan was as associated with America as Bret with Canada? I'm not sure I agree with that. If WWE ran over 80% of their shows in Canada, I'd also side with Vince here, for the record, but Canada is a niche market, and the US is not.
  12. Look at it this way -- Bret Hart is probably the most famous Canadian athlete. Hockey isn't big outside of Canada, so you can throw out Gretzsky, and Bret was a huge draw internationally for five years in the 90s. There are no wrestlers that have been so closely related to America that have been at Bret's level, and I can't think of a single American wrestler that's ever been a legitimate American hero. Austin, Rock and Hogan were bigger stars, but none of them had their entire character based around their home country.
  13. They could have, but they didn't. I do think that Bret's WWF memory was tarnished by Montreal quite a bit, actually. It's now what he's most remembered for, even more than anything he ever did in the ring. The word "reasonable" would have been where the fight was in court, no doubt. Who knows who would have won that case, but Bret would have had circumstance on his side since his 20-year contract was intentionally breached and he was told that it would be intentionally breached. Which it was. After 14 years in the company, doing a job to a guy who humped the Canadian flag, in Canada, who had already beaten you once, after you've been pushed as a national hero, would have ruined him. Imagine he'd done a clean job in Montreal. He maintained some semblance of worth there because of the situation, but had he laid down for Michaels clean as a sheet, WCW would have had a hard time promoting him in Canada after that, and one of the reasons Bischoff wanted him at the time was so they could start running shows north of the border with a strong drawing card besides Hogan (which never happened because of poor management). Canadian fans are a slightly different breed. They booed Goldberg for *two years* after the steel plate angle in Toronto. They don't forget.

  15. I agree that it did go a little long, which was often a problem in Midnights/RnRs matches. I've had this argument with Ray in the past, but Vince's involvement in the match just takes it down so much for me. It's an angle that made sense at the time and Vince had to be involved to get the point across of Austin being a changed man, but at the same time, I feel like they could have accomplished just as much by doing it as a post-match angle instead of doing it in the match. Everything up until Vince starts walking down the aisle is incredible, and there are some great nearfalls afterward, but it just feels a little anti-climatic. Great match - easily Jericho's best and Rock is better here than he was against Austin, as he's playing the Jumbo to Jericho's Misawa, and he's not doing a lousy bladejob like he did at Wrestlemania. Ending drags it down a little, as does the height difference at times, as Rock's catapult looks awkward because he's a good 8 inches taller than Jericho and they botch a legwhip for the same reasons. Besides that, this is a beautiful match with Jericho pulling out lots of big moves to show how important this match is to him -- the standing huracanrana is a beautiful highspot and Rock takes it well, and he also uses a senton and has some cool counters to some of Rock's bigger moves. Crowd is played like a violin the whole way, rooting for Rock big at the beginning and siding with Jericho by the end because they know they're seeing something historic (or at least it would have been had they not botched Jericho's big run so horribly). Jericho's facial expressions have never been better. I really like Windham keeping the sleeper on when the match rolled outside, and I like the way the match starts off with all the big moves being pulled out immediately. Great match! Austin totally carried this and was amazing here -- just as good as he was at Wrestlemania I thought, if not better. Angle couldn't have had this match with anyone else. I'm glad you mentioned that. The Bash match plays more like a prelude to future matches for me, and while it's all great offense, Vader seems to be in control just a little too much. Sting still gets in all his big moves, and they built to the finish properly, but I like Starrcade more for a competitive feel. Fall Brawl suffers the same problem in reverse with Sting practically squashing Vader before losing, but the heat for his big moves is molten. I might have ranked Fall Brawl ahead of Starrcade even had they worked a straight match without the stupid WCW overbooking. Watching Friday night, I really felt Fall Brawl was as close to perfect as I've seen two guys work in the US until WCW did too much with the last 7-8 minutes. Starrcade I might have liked even more had they built more to Sting's pinfall at the end, as it came out of nowhere. Yes. I liked this even more the second time around. I'm pretty much past most of the 2002 stuff and I'm about halfway through the 2003 at this point, so things should start picking up pretty quickly. Sadly, I don't have either London/Danielson match though. Agreed. I've never seen a match that made me miss WCW as much as Rey/Noble, because that feud probably would have been booked and lasted for six months or more at some point in 2001-2002. Of course, Rey is better now than he was then, so maybe it's for the better. Bradshaw is a much better opponent for Eddy than Angle because the selling is leaps and bounds better. They're not afraid to take their time to sell the impact of big moves, realizing that a slow pace isn't a bad pace. Smokes the Benoit/Angle cage match from 06/01. Yes, debut of the James boys. I would have liked this even more had they done more after the hot tag, but it was a nice match and was mostly Magnum in the ring. Morton looked awesome here. I know they had a 15+ minute match on NWA Pro around this time, so I'm hoping Ginnetty has the Pro eps from '86 as well. One thing about Flair's working style is that he's a mark for the pop, and he'll do anything to get heat. Morton had so much heat without Flair having to make himself look like a clown to get the match over that Flair was able to relax. That's one thing about Flair that I find interesting - we've discussed how sometimes he does too much to sacrifice his credibility when he's working with a guy that he thinks he has to "make", but I've seen him do some of his best work against guys that are already incredibly over like Morton and Hogan. So I've decided that Flair's problem is that he's not always the best judge of talent, because I think he considers guys like Hart and Luger on the same level because he thought they were about equally over. This coincides with something he said on WOL in 1999, which was that he enjoyed his matches with Morton more than anyone he wrestled in the next 2-3 years before Steamboat because he had to do less to get the match over. Just a weird way he thought about things, I guess, but it makes more sense now. JBL is a better worker than Kevin Nash or Scott Norton ever were, considering that he goes out of his way to put Rey's big offense over while still wrestling as a big man against a little man. The finish is GREAT considering that you'd expect Rey to do a clean job against the guy who just lost the title. Check out the Houston/Royal v George South/Gene Ligon match from Worldwide right around the same time on the NWA discs. Awesome little squash. South was actually a hell of a worker. Brief, but doesn't let up.
  16. Bret showed up on the first Nitro he actually could contractually appear on, which was on 12/15, the week after the IYH: DX PPV. So yes, he was still obligated to the WWF on the day of the PPV, which was 12/07 (my 18th birthday!). Even if you go further back than that, if Vince had Bret under contract, he was purposely breaching it by trying to get out of it early. Had Bret not punched Vince, he could have sued them for the early breach and for vetoing his creative control clause in the last 30 days of his deal. (He still could have actually, but at that point, he could have been countersued for assaulting Vince.) I can understand Bret's motivations for not wanting to lose, especially since Shawn had flat out said he was refusing to do jobs for *anyone* at that point, and there are no other top stars who would agree to drop a belt to someone with that attitude. Losing in Canada after being built up huge as a local hero would have totally destroyed his future worth, and it turns out that it did.
  17. There was ZERO CHANCE of Bret appearing on Nitro the next night, considering that he was still under contract to WWE and booked to appear on RAW the following night in Ottowa. He was even scheduled to drop the belt - to Shawn Michaels - at the December PPV. There's no justification for what happened.
  18. Speculation picks up again. From the Torch:

  21. Rey Misterio Jr v Jamie Noble - WWE Velocity 05/01/04 Finding this match in itself is very WCW-ish in nature, as that was a company of countless hidden gems, and this plays exactly like it would be one of those gems. This is the best I've seen from Noble in WWE, and it's a sign of what he could have accomplished in his first run if his matches were given more time to develop. He's great here; both are, actually. The match starts off with some really spirited matwork with neither guy able to gain an advantage and they do a terrific job of breaking up the matwork with some awesome highspots to maintain the heat. They do such a good job in that area that my favorite moment of the match occurs when Rey goes back to the headlock and it gets a big pop. It's rare in WWE that anyone gets a pop for going to the mat. Noble seems to be challenging Regal here, doing so many small things so well that it's easy to not catch them all. The way he uses his entire body to his advantage is beautiful. Rey's kicks are a thing of beauty too, as he seems to have channeled the angry spirit of Taijiri into his already stellar offense. In a really cool spot, Noble turns a springboard attempt into a Northern Lights suplex and he even teases a Tiger Bomb before Rey gets out of it. This is about as WCW-style a match as you'll see in WWE between two juniors, with all the stops being pulled out and the match logically progressing throughout. Worth going out of your way to see. ***3/4
  22. Like Tim, I think reviewing this match and giving everything away would totally spoil it, but the points he made were spot on. This is a fantastic match, easily the best match Big Show has ever had. I was really impressed here by Show's ability to work some complex sequences, like misses a clothesline, leading to Eddy trying a plancha to the outside, leading to Eddy being sent crashing into the post. You'll also see Eddy do a really great job of putting over some really ancient offense. Enough said for now, but I do recommend everyone see this match, especially if you cut your wrestling teeth on seeing small babyfaces fight the giants and you enjoy that style. Probably about ***3/4.
  23. Eddy Guerrero v Rey Misterio Jr - WWE Smackdown 03/18/04 My initial perceptions of this being the WWE equivalent of Otani/Samurai were wrong after rewatching this, but this is still an outstanding match for entirely different reasons. In fact, if anything, it's more of a more current (and abbreviated) equivalent of Bret Hart's title defense against the 1-2-3 Kid back in July of '94 on RAW. It's important to note that the crowd is solidly behind Eddy at the beginning of this match, like Hart/Kid, and as the match progresses, they find themselves more behind Rey. Eddy is stunned when Rey headscissors him out of the ring, much like Bret was stunned when Kid caught him with such a fast armdrag early on in their match. There's some really good, basic but fast paced matwork to start things off before tempers flare and a shoving match starts. One advantage this has over Bret/Kid is that these two are more capable of doing some really complex wrestling sequences, the first of which is when Rey tries a DDT out of a wheelbarrow suplex attempt and Eddy blocks it by running him into the ringpost. We see some really unique armwork that I've never seen in WWE before this match, with Eddy *standing on his head* to add leverage to a basic hammerlock and going right back to it every time Rey gets in a burst of big offense. The best highspot of the match sees Rey counter a back bodydrop attempt into a bodyscissors to throw Eddy out of the ring, following it up with a beautiful Asai moonsault to the floor. In fact, the highspots come across looking even more spectacular than they would otherwise because Eddy isn't doing any big spots -- he's working the mat and getting that story over, which shows the value in being a versatile wrestler capable of switching gears when needed. The false finishes are also awesome, as the crowd is totally convinced Rey has pulled off the upset of a lifetime when he gets a DDT on Eddy after yet another multi-move sequence. The point is also made that Rey knows Eddy quite well, as he blocks the third Locomotion suplex into a schoolboy. Eddy later gets in the move anyway, which actually gets him booed. He misses a frogsplash, giving Rey his last chance to secure the win. The 619 setup here is the best I've seen it, with absolutely no stalling and a totally believable transition into the move. He misses the West Coast Pop, however, which gives Eddy a chance to get in La Magistral to finish things off. Great, great match that does wonders to get each guy over, not only as a great wrestler, but as a great champion and a great challenger. These two are a wrestling marriage made in heaven more often than not. ***3/4
