It's not limited to just wrestling for sure, but non-Southern accents that are also regional don't seem to be as stigmatized. Another reason it's odd to me is that until recent years, our Presidents usually had Southern accents. So why would it not matter in politics but matter in other things? And why did WWE never get the "Southern" stigma when guys like Austin, Undertaker, Michaels, Jim Ross, Lawler, the Hardys and plenty of other big names of the time also had Southern accents to varying degrees?
