  1. All this fanfare to watch Nitro on this tiny TV. These people are all about the party, but don't seem to be watching the show. I know, I'm no fun.
  2. It's Hall & Nash vs Public Enemy, and Nash powerbombs Rocco Rock onto Johnny Grunge who is laying on a table at ringside. The match is thrown out and Nash is arrested and screams "Attica! Attica!"
  3. Just a quick ringing of the bell before the show goes on, the story of wrestling in a nutshell sadly.
  4. You can hear the air come out of the building when Savio Vega is announced as the replacement for Shawn Michaels. The WWF still has their old logo in spots, but I think this was the last time we'd see that. I thought this was a fun match, and Austin is massively over. I think I've read before that this was the first time the Big Two had done good business in Texas in years, but I'm not 100% sure about that. I agree that it was strange how the match started off with tons of brawling then settled into a pretty routine match with Funk trying to make the hot tag. Why do the rules suddenly matter? HHH's entire star power at this point was predicated on being friends with Shawn, so when you see him without Shawn, he looks pretty ordinary. They did some interesting weapons stuff with the barbed wire and chairs when Cactus tagged in. I wish the match had gone a little longer after Austin tagged in, as they could have done a hot nearfall or two before going home. They tried and this was good but I would also call it a disappointing PPV main event. Chyna eating the stunner was a huge moment.
  5. I still think Kanyon should have stayed Mortis and kept some mystique about him. As Kanyon, he was way too ordinary.
  6. I've never seen Randy Savage work the mat. I have seen Piper do it in short spurts, but I don't know. At one point they were supposed to bring in a lot of New Japan guys with shooter reps to feed to him and I'm not sure why that didn't happen.
  7. What made the NWO work is just gone at this point. They are so entrenched. The announcers don't have any fear when Hogan and Bischoff come out; in fact, they are now treating their very presence as something routine. The NWO has no gold at the moment and it's not really presented as a big enough deal to threaten their livelihood. This seems like an attempt to re-establish the NWO as "taking over" WCW and that's the worst turn they could take with this at this point. There is no reason for the NWO to continue as such a strong focal point by this time. Hogan asks Savage to come out and says that an apology is necessary, and wants to reconcile. Hogan/Savage vs Luger/Sting is made for Monday night. Hogan insists that Savage thank Bischoff for making that match happen and says he's sorry ... for putting so much faith in Savage. He then demands an apology from Savage, who surprisingly obliges before decking Hogan and Bischoff both! Hogan comes back in with a chair but Savage bails.
  8. Sandman takes a match for Tommy Dreamer since his grandfather just passed away, and yeah, the mutants respond very much in character. This was very strange. I wasn't offended, but this was still pretty exploitative. If WWE hadn't made this sort of thing common with with using real deaths to get heat on heels, I think this would stand out more as a disgusting promotional tactic.
  9. I like Taz promos and this was fine, but I haven't found much reason yet to care about this feud, so it rings a little hollow. This went a little long.
  10. Yes, and those aren't top guys. I'm thinking main event level guys.
  11. DX are out and are not happy at all, just after Austin locked Los Boricuas in a room where they were looking for him in the locker room area. Austin comes out with the WWF title and swings it around as a weapon, which causes DX to bail. The NAO are also out and Austin is holding them off with the belt as they chant his name. Chyna is able to retrieve the belt and Cactus and Funk come through the ring to make the save, prompting a brawl.
  12. The NAO make light of what happened the week before and yeah, they are now firmly in top spots.
  13. Great package that really shows that the WWF comeback was now in full swing. I have to give credit to everyone involved in this - Austin, Tyson, DX and Vince. It's interesting that of all the things that went into turning the WWF around, I think they ran with the stuff long-term that just happened to be part of that time instead of specifically what led to it. This all feels like real people with real issues heightened by the presence of a celebrity who fits in with where they are going creatively. For all the talk about how WWE is still stuck in 1998, I watch this segment and wish that was more true than it is.
  14. The entire world wants to know how The Rock feels about human genetic cloning! Rock favors the practice, but only if it's done selectively. I miss these so much. The current events promos were hilarious to me.
  15. For months, DX has outsmarted all of the babyfaces repeatedly and laughed at everyone. It made segments like this pretty satisfying because even if it was something minor, Shawn was getting some measure of comeuppance. Shawn interrupts Austin via Titantron and laughs about rubbing the belt in his face last week and reminds Austin that he's the one that calls the shots around there. He says if Austin can give him one good reason, he'll come out and slap the taste out of Austin's mouth. Austin has the belt and has replaced the real thing with a fake one in Shawn's bag. Shawn is not happy and I enjoyed this.
  16. The brief tape dragging would have given this an awesomely morbid feel had it continued. Sunny hasn't done anything of consequence in over a year.
  17. Last few minutes. The Steiners win the tag titles, as they needed to be champions going into SuperBrawl to get over that angle. That finish was awfully sloppy.
  18. Hall with a drug reference that makes Nash laugh.
  19. Last few minutes. Hogan is about to use a chair when Liz takes it away and distracts him, leading to Savage taking back over and hitting Hogan with it a few times. Bagwell pulls the referee out of the ring just as he was about to make the count after Savage's big elbow, and the NWO comes down to beat down Savage. Nash may do the laziest run-in of all time here, not even bothering to get in the ring. Savage attacks Hogan again at the last minute and has to be pulled off. A fresh feud with the two biggest names in the company feels stale, how about that!
  20. I can't imagine what Bill Watts would have done to someone who did this to JYD ... on a LIVE show where they can't throw out the tape, no less! It stands out to me that Goldberg has some awesome mat stuff he could do, but there weren't really any top guys at the time that were going to have a clue how to do something with that other than maybe Bret Hart, and I'm not even sure he could. While I enjoyed this quite a bit, I understand being pissed with Regal over it. All of Goldberg's squashes have been so heated to this point and this kills the crowd, and considering their relative placement, Regal was far too competitive. I think if this had been laid out like this instead of just happening, they could have crafted an awesome five minute match that made Goldberg look awesome and showed a different dimension to him in the ring. But yeah, like Zenjo said, this was a long five minutes.
  21. Hogan has a few words of warning for Savage. I tend to like promos where someone says they have three points to make and then lists them all, so I liked this. But I agree that Hogan-Savage, if they're going to do it, is an awfully big match to just throw out with less than three hours of build. I also think this is taking away from the build to Hogan-Sting, which should have been a rematch with some real momentum. Savage interrupts from the crowd but Hogan promises to set him straight.
  22. This really was an outstanding 9 minutes of action, and I suspect this would be the MOTY to this point (if not more than that) if we had it in full. I suspect the early parts of this were all about Otani weakening Liger's arm based on where this was early. Otani's character is a little smarter than he had been, maybe because he's the champion, but Liger still picks up a victory and regains the IWGP Junior Title. Great stuff.
  23. I actually really liked Douglas's promo. I agree that a sound explanation for the turn is missing but I do think Shane was excellent in his delivery, stupid focus on insider terms aside. The longest evil laugh ever at the end?
  24. We talk about the Kevin Dunn camera shake - check out the camera work here while Bigelow is putting the boots to Taz. They turn on Storm to boot him out of the group as well. We'll see how they follow up on this and I'll reserve opinion until then, but yeah, this is an oddly laid out angle.
  25. I think it's interesting how the juniors have taken a more basic approach when given time in 1998 so far. We've seen it with Rey-Juventud, Teioh-Funaki and now here. You'll never see me not like a match focused on body part selling and that definitely rings true here. I always saw Gedo as someone good for solid matches, but because he keeps things so simple, he doesn't quite get to the next level. He comes close here, but he doesn't have the same charisma of other very basic wrestlers like Norio Honaga to offset that either. Still, I could watch matches like this all day and while my universe would still be safely intact, I'd be a happy wrestling fan. It does come across as a bit second rate in comparison to Liger, Kanemoto and Otani, but I don't think that's more on Gedo. Taijiri looks like a guy dangerously close to putting all of the pieces together, but he also would have benefitted from having a long-term rival on his level or better.
