He's working an angle to draw people to his show.

According to the Montreal timeline in the WON, Bret wasn't even approached about a heel turn until March 10, two weeks before Wrestlemania. Bret agreed to it after thinking about it, and you can definitely see some build to it on the 3/10 RAW. I suspect Vince had been thinking about it for a while and was just waiting for the right time to say it to Bret.

Did he talk at all about Ric Flair firing him and him throwing a garbage can at him in retaliation?

I was just remembering that WWE wanted Britney Spears to have her head shaved on RAW in 2007, and was upset when she did it herself. That was what they wanted their work with Kevin Federline to lead to eventually. The Britney trainwreck was such an enormous tabloid draw at the time that I can't imagine the buzz that would have created.

[1998-01-20-BattlARTS] Yuki Ishikawa vs Alexander Otsuka
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I thought this was a great match. They did all of this fantastic matwork, just as you'd expect, but I always love when pro-style spots like a dropkick, vertical suplex and a GIANT SWING(!) can be worked into a match where almost everything else resembles the shoot style feds, and those moves don't seem even slightly out of place. The BattlARTS style really does manage to encompass most of the great things about the in-ring aspect of professional wrestling.- 12 replies

I'm not saying that has to be the case for a good match, as I also think a match can be good if that is the predominant factor - wow, they're doing lots of cool stuff. I just think Cesaro not expanding beyond that would hurt him on top even if he was getting pushed harder. I was really impressed with the guy after seeing the Cena match, but that was around the time I started watching week-to-week. And when he pulled out those impressive spots as signature moves, they meant less to me and he just became a modern version of early 90s Scott Steiner - who also had some great matches, mind you.
-
Who did you want to win and why? I'm curious.
-
I think the Cesaro-Zayn matches were really good, but the emotion seemed to be that people were popping for the cool moves and didn't care who won or lost. Part of it is WWE style.

Eh, whatever works. There are a few wrestlers, both good and bad ones, that when you type their names, PWO is the first site to come up, since we're the only place online discussing them. I think that's pretty cool.
-
I don't mean that. I mean getting a crowd into a match through heel mannerisms, great facial expressions and ability to get sympathy on his opponent, instead of just getting people to pop for his highspots.

[1998-01-19-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin, Vince McMahon and Mike Tyson
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
This was so amazing. I think everyone involved was great, but Vince just took the cake for me. I loved him on the apron so mad that he's trying to take shots at Austin. Austin is no longer on the way to cementing himself as the WWF's top guy. He's there. Classic. -
The 1996 version of the Flair-Savage feud is what boosted house shows, not the 1995 version.

Shawn pretending to be Undertaker and doing his whole entrance before just switching to the DX music is hilarious. HHH and Chyna soon follow with a grill, marshmallows and hot dogs, which gives them plenty of chances to make penis jokes. HHH is terrible. HHH makes fun of his supposed childhood idol Ric Flair. After we get past all the pointless stuff, Shawn mentions Austin for the first time and the crowd pops big. I like Shawn mentioning all the people he's beaten and pointing out that he has beaten a lot of guys in WCW too.

Flair has shined more in the previous segments but Bret gets more of a chance to talk here and does a really good job. Flair does an awesome job putting over the importance of winning this match. They have done a really good job hyping this match.

[1998-01-18-WWF-Royal Rumble] Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker (Casket)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I thought this was a great match. Obviously not at the level of HIAC, but I would put this above Ground Zero pretty easily. Yes, there's a ton of bullshit with all the run-ins, but I liked that they gave them plenty of time to work a match before getting into all of that. I really liked the actual wrestling portion of this match a lot, and I agree with Chad on the sheer number of memorable visuals being really impressive. The finish was shitty because Shawn was such an afterthought, but otherwise, I liked this a lot.- 20 replies

Amazing that they turned around with this crew. Just makes what Austin accomplished even more impressive. They did a great job elevating Rock, putting him in moments like this even before he was ready and as he was climbing the ladder. Good stuff. Austin wins the Rumble. Mike Tyson looks on and applauds. He wrote in his book that he was really high at this show.

Yeah, this was a fun match. I think it felt more like a good TV match than a good PPV match, although it was much better than TV matches of the time. Liked the finishing splash with Luna on Vader's back.

[1998-01-15-WCW-Thunder] Rey Misterio Jr vs Juventud Guerrera
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I think I liked this more than anyone else. Juventud was a machine in this. The layout was similar to Rey/Ultimo at World War 3. I don't think the match was at that level, but that's kind of how this was worked. I thought this was really good and a nice change of pace for the division. It still had some great flying, but Juventud being dominant was more methodical than usual. I loved Juventud countering the top rope rana attempt into a powerbomb, as the whole match was worked as Juventud having Rey really well-scouted. This was pretty easily the best TV match of January. On a side note, someone needed to tell Bobby Heenan to stop with the "Ohhhh!" on every highspot. -
[1998-01-15-WCW-Thunder] Music Video: Lex Luger vs Randy Savage
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I know this is what wrestling videos looked like at this time (and still look like today, unfortunately), but the feud wasn't nearly dramatic enough to have all of these slow motion, black and white spots. -
AHH, THE CHOKESLAM! Lodi starts walking around ringside with a Nash Rules sign, which again, if he's not in the NWO really undermines them as this outsider renegade organization. I guess there's only so long that could last anyway. The Flock run in and take bumps for The Giant. It looks horrible because everyone is politely waiting for their turn to take a bump instead of timing it better, Van Hammer being the highlight. Nash comes in at the end and gets in Giant's face in an attempt to get him to violate his restraining order by throwing hot coffee in his face and taunting him all the way back to the dressing room.

[1998-01-15-GAEA] Etsuko Mita & Mima Shimoda vs Meiko Satomura & Sonoko Kato
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Well, this was a war with great selling and action and lots of blood. I really like Satomura and Kato as a tag team and thought they did a great job getting over the stakes of this. I wish the LCO hadn't pulled in the weapons because the match was going swimmingly just focused on the wrestling and I thought they cheapened it a little. I liked the story of the LCO being overconfident and doing nonchalant covers, only to realize as the match went on that they needed to take it more seriously.- 7 replies
