  1. Always thought it was weird how he just kind of vanished around 1993-1994, never to return.
  2. I know I shouldn't be but for some reason I'm frustrated by him not knowing who Black Gordman and Great Goliath are: http://www.rspwfaq.net/2013/10/the-coliseu...t=1382425427012
  3. Actually, Simon is his son in law who he sort of pretends is his son.
  4. Been a long time since I watched it but I remember loving the 60 minute draw w/ Dory. He was a very different worker when he was young and not the top guy/legend.

Shoo baby returns! Rhodes family entrance music mash up! Amazing.
  6. He has done more to spread world peace than any other other wrestler. How can you hate a man like that? Inoki is love.
  7. That was about a year and a half ago. John Was looking through this thread and this post deserves to be bumped.
  8. TV landscape is too different. Yeah, TNA gets rights fees now, but they'd have to put a lot of money into a building to get it to look good enough for TV.
  9. Agree that this is a great post and a terrific definition of what characteristics constitute a territory. I do have one question. Would you consider both promotions in Knoxville in 1978 (Southeastern and ICW) territories? I'll defer to Kris here, because I know there were times where the Knoxville NWA office barely had any spot show towns going, much less a loop. Don't know if All-Star ran other towns, but they were absorbed in to ICW, which did have an actual territory.
  10. Probably some point in 1988. Clawmaster's results have them still working territory-ish through the end of 1987, and a bit into 1988 (factoring in missing results as well since they ran increasingly smaller shows). I used to think it was '88 but at some point I read, I think in old WONs, that the AWA had nothing happening betwen TV shoots at times in '87, too. Also, keep in mind that a lot of the smaller shows from '88-on were sold shows promoted outside of the "AWA territory" (like that Pennsylvania show there's a handheld of) by Rob Russen.
  11. The first Funk-Lawler match of 2003 was 4/12 in JAPW which I saw live and was really, really good. Dunno how it compares to their other matches they had that year.
  12. Tyrannosauruses are gifted entertainers with a tremendous athletic prowess and a voracious appetite for life.
  13. To me, a territory was a full-time job promotion that had a loop with regular towns in a specific geographic area. That's the commonly accepted definition, being a territory doesn't automatically mean your boundaries are set by the NWA because there were non-NWA territories like in Arizona. SMW was a territory because it was a full time office with a loop. Global wasn't. The AWA stopped being a full-time territory in '87, more or less, because they would live off the ESPN deal and go months at a time without running house shows. St. Louis was one town that cherry-picked and thus wasn't a territory. Toronto usually got talent from elsewhere generally just one town and TV, with Buffalo occasionally mixed in as well as occasional spot shows. ECW wasn't a territory because there was no loop. The USWA was through the end because they did have a loop. Also, in 1978, there WERE two promotions in Knoxville: Southeastern and All-Star/ICW. Bad example there.
  14. Also, they started using "five star match" again this year. They brought back the "parrot the backstage interviewer's first question" thing a few weeks ago, too.
  15. Has Foley ever talked about how he felt after the HIAC match with HHH in 2000? While he did take that dumb throwaway bump off the side of the cage earlier on, they gimmicked the ring for the finish and I've always wondered just how "safe" it was.
  16. If Marty can't afford surgery I can't blame him for wanting to numb himself with painkillers and alcohol. If he got detoxed and set his pain receptors right, his ankles would still have him in agony. He's not a star at the level of Scott Hall but someone trustworthy should work with him on a donation deal to get him the surgery.
  17. Keep in mind that as an on screen character, Earl was "Dave Hebner" for a few years. I can't remember if Dave did any agent pull-aparts during that period, or only later when Earl was referred to as Earl onscreen.
  18. I wouldn't necessarily lump Pop in with Achtung Baby/Zooropa in with Pop. The ZooTV tour has the meta/parody/self-referential aspects of Pop, but not necessarily the albums. Style/production wise? Maybe, but I think Pop is kind of its own thing.
  19. Actually John, WWE.com has been producing excellent content this year, especially for the WWEClassics.com subsite. Zach Linder and others have turned the non storyline content into a total old school wrestling geek site that happens to have all of WWE's resources (I don't mean financial, I mean photos, videos, contacts, etc) at their disposal. I wouldn't throw out official sites just for being official sites.
  20. Not imagining things. Request TV got pissed and they quickly dropped the rumble idea. Don't remember why they kept the name.
  21. My final ballot that I sent to Dave on Friday: I FOLLOWED THE HISTORICAL PERFORMERS ERA CANDIDATES [Abstain] I FOLLOWED THE MODERN PERFORMERS IN U.S/CANADA CANDIDATES Ivan Koloff Rock & Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) Johnny "Mr. Wrestling II" Walker I FOLLOWED WRESTLING IN JAPAN CANDIDATES [X] I FOLLOWED WRESTLING IN MEXICO CANDIDATES Cien Caras Karloff Lagarde Blue Panther Villano III Dr. Wagner Sr. I FOLLOWED WRESTLING IN EUROPE CANDIDATES [Abstain] I FOLLOWED WRESTLING IN AUSTRALIA/PACIFIC ISLANDS/PUERTO RICO CANDIDATES Carlos Colon Mark Lewin NON-WRESTLERS Howard Finkel Jimmy Hart Jerry Jarrett Takashi Matsunaga Don Owen --- In the end I swapped out Gary Hart for Howard Finkel because if Lennon is in, he has to be as well. I couldn't bring myself to vote for Okerlund yet in part because I don't agree with the argument for him being "the best" or "establishing a role." Interviews were usually done by the lead announcer and he was the guy when the responsibilities were divided up. If this category still had unlimited slots, I'd vote for him, but Finkel is the stronger candidate right now and my other four are locked in place. Yes, Japan was a no vote as opposed to abstention because of Tanahashi and Sasaki.
  22. The thread was originally about his Benoit book.
  23. Triple H vs CM Punk (9/18/11 Night of Champions - No Holds Barred Match) Lost in the Kevin Nash BS, THIS IS PHIL BROOKS TALKING TO PAUL LEVESQUE, Punk not going over, etc was that this was an excellent brawl where Punk looked great and HHH had one of his best performances in a long time. You keep worrying it'll break down into a paint by numbers WWE main event style brawl but it never does and makes me wish Punk could have more opportunities to do stuff like this, which is much better than the Jericho match several months later. HHH getting sandbags chucked at his head is awesome. Triple H vs Sheamus (3/17/11 MSG - No Holds Barred Match) More of a yearbook pick than a best matches of 2011 pick, but it's by far the biggest WWE house show match in years, as they booked the Sheamus blowoff for HHH's MSG tuneup match since he was shifted to facing Undertaker at Mania. Very good match with a really hot crowd and an interesting comparison to the Punk match.
  24. Was Lanny fired? I know he was working independent shows but I figured he was just a guy who was allowed to do so when he wasn't booked. Of course on a 1991 WWF contract not being booked does effectively mean you're fired, so...
  25. I hadn't read the blurb until now and this part stood out: After the Bruno article, this should be...interesting.
