Best worker aged 45+ NOT called Ric Flair or Terry Funk?
Kostka replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
Flair also has had plenty of more chances to work tv matches/PPV epics since his second WWF tenture as he was booked as "the greatest of all time" where most of Lawlers stuff (sans Miz feud) hes been presented more as "secondary legend who has mini midcard programs now and then." Still, the Miz shit was fantastic and really prepped Miz for Mania more than anything Flair did in that run IMO. Miz vs Lawler from EC I'd put up there with the best of 2000s Flair. -

Finlay looked like the best in the world in his match with Callihan. Lawler was already mentioned and is my second choice after Finlay... How about Dundee? -
That's a regular bit in Drew Macs matches. He gets really pissy and short fused whenever he gets countered or the tide starts to shift, and his temper is usually what costs him. It's a pretty consistent theme in his matches that I like. You would like their other matches too. Drews a great sprint guy too against Rey, Dolph and in a different shortie with Masters. Totally agree on the Windham comparison of Drew. Never thought of that.

I would be more than happy and I will provide youtube links. My favorite "random" WWE match of the year so far is Chris Masters v. Drew MacIntrye http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx560rlH8zs Well that was waaaaay better than I expected it to be. McIntyre is a guy that could be pushed as a new Barry Windham-type wrestler. I know Masters is the guy that's gotten the credit, and I thought he was solid, but Drew really showed superstar potential. There were a few awkward moments, but they came from trying too hard. The exact opposite of a self-conscious epic. This was a pretty earnest match with a few minor missteps, but overall a strong command of the basics. The match is built around a Masters knee injury with Drew building to a figure four, with Masters fighting him off and beginning his comeback. I don't want to overstate the case for this, but it's definitely a match worth watching. I will say it breaks my heart to see wrestlers working this hard and not getting much reaction, but when you have two guys putting this much thought into what they're doing, I can see how that becomes secondary. I'll continue watching when I can, or in between 1992 yearbook stuff when that starts to feel stale. agreed that the match displays a strong command of basics done extremely well, and that a match with simple traditional build is timeless. One question... What part of the match did you find awkward? Granted, I only saw it once but I walked away thinking it was nearly perfectly executed. Favorite bit of the match was Masters selling the knee coming off the top for the diving shoulder and collapsing on the Irish whip. I wish all wrestlers "tried too hard" like that in 2011 instead of worrying about the next cool spot.

Rey was every bit as good as Eddy in 2005, and Eddy was phenomenal that year. I'd put Reys 1996, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011 side by side with Eddys best years too. But yeah, CM Punk is cool.

Unfortunately it looks to be more likely Cena-Del Rio and Punk-Nash or HHH for that show.

I wonder if Waltman will get another run out of this? I don't think H will step in the ring yet, and obviously he'd be a lot more valuable in-ring guy than Nash for this. Waltman vs Punk would fucking rule... Waltman vs Cena would be awesome. Waltman vs Mysterio... Him tagging up with Nash and/or Del Rio against Cena and Punk and Mysterio or whatever. Bring on Waltman!

Definitely a case of body image obsession. -
Hansen is so fucking great. There are soooo many great matches throughout his near 30 year career. I have a match of his on my hard drive from the late 70s against the Destroyer that is a blast. Digging through the 80s set, there are so many little gems I'm discovering like w DiBiase vs Nakano/Yatsu 7/17/87. Just an amazingly psychologically sound brawler who could mix it up on the mat, was a great seller, great at projecting "immovable giant bull", an incredible tag wrestler, had a great, well-protected finisher... Everything he did looked great/out of control, but always at the right time...could have high end epic main event style matches as good as anyone in history. I think he's the best monster heel of all time, the best gaijin of all time, and fuck it, my favorite wrestler of all time.

I've never seen Wrestlemania 1.

You guys didn't talk about the underrated Big Show/Punk feud, complete with Show unmasking/unveiling bald CM Punk, and also the Society breaking Shows hand with Punk channeling his inner Greg Valentine with the "I broke Big Shows hand" t-shirt. Shit was awesome. Great show as always though. Best wrestling related podcast around. All of you guys bring something different to the table with different perspectives and it's always entertaining, insightful and funny. The Savage show is going to be fucking awesome im sure.

This honestly always kept me from really being a huge Rock fan. Lots of entertaining talk, not much talk to hype something and get me excited about seeing it. That is why Rock is in such a league of his own. He's so good at his "thing" that you can't really judge him by traditional standards of what makes a great promo guy.
-
It was a tables match. Truth speared him through a table while he had Punk up on his shoulders for an AA. He sold it fine. He was kinda sitting up looking at Punk not too long into the promo.

Eddie's steel cage promo is probably the best promo of the modern era by far. I wish someone would post that damn promo on YouTube as I've been searching for it for years. All I have is the memory of "how can you beat someone that has already lost everything?". The one where he brings out the ripped mask and sits in a chair in the middle of the ring with the lights dimmed is on YouTube and is a really awesome promo too.
-
Not to take away from what Punk did, but having the best promo of the past 5 years isn't really a crowning achievement. The bar set for "great promo" is at an all time low. Punk was really great...and stands out as greater in an age of bad/listless/robotic promo work. Eddies mic work in 2005 vs Mysterio is the closest modern day promo work I can think of that rivals Punks Raw thing. Jericho had his moments in the Michaels program in 2008 but I find it overrated.

Orton vs Edge from 2007, either the week before or after the Cena/Michaels UK match, was heel vs heel and really good.
-
Hansen/Gordy vs the Funk bros, Terry retirement match 8/31/83 is fucking epic. Hansen/Gordy is my favorite short term team ever. I also absolutely love the Hansen vs Terry Funk out of control brawls in All Japan from 82, 83 and 85.

Workrate teams don't age as well (not that Eaton/Lane don't age well, per say).. And while Eaton was great in both roles, I always prefered Condrey as the worker/brain of the team with Eaton as the flash opposed Eaton as the worker/brain and Lane as the flash. Eaton was better than Lane in that role in the team, but Condrey was better as the brain. Better heat magnets + working on top more = Eaton/Condrey. Eaton/Lane DID get great heat though, especially when you consider they were indeed more "workrate" oriented, something is to be said about their ability to do both. I prefer the Fabs for Lane teams but Condrey/Eaton trump them all IMO.

PG-13.

Simply... electrifying.

Exactly. I think people tend to focus on Cena-Umaga from the same show, and that was a match I loved at the time too. I still do, but in retrospect, Hardys-MNM is every bit as good, maybe even better. It's just one of those gems that got lost in the shuffle.
