Given all the batshit crazy things that the GOP is saying about guns, revolution and torture, it's a bit odd that anyone would freak out about a fake choking and a faking wrestling show. John

Warrior has to hold the record: getting fired after holding up the company for more $$$ on a PPV, then getting fired after the PPV.
  7. Yeah... I'm not even going to the statutory card. More along the lines that it's Jake, and I'd take it with a big grain of salt. My thought on the "marriage that neither wanted" is that Smith was a wrestler. It's not terribly hard for a wrestler in the 50s to simply skip town and go do business elsewhere, leaving a pregnent woman/girl behind if he didn't want it. Of all professions in the country, it's one of the easiest to skip town on. Just doesn't make a great deal of sense that anyone could force him to marry. No... I wouldn't buy that Local Law Enforcement was involved in a shotgun marriage either. If they gave enough shit, they would have shotgunned Smith, and the kid (Jake) would have been raised by the grandmother as her own... which wasn't an uncommon practice in those days. Instead, Smith and Mrs. Smith batted off a second kid. I do recall the Robin comment. I also think that Sam Houston talked about the claims/accusations in his shoot, but haven't seen it written up. All that said, the notion that Smith or anyone else in the business had a taste for underage girls isn't terribly surprising. We've heard enough of that out of the business over the years. John
  8. The tricky thing about Jake-Grizzly is that it's Jake, and 90% of the stuff out of his mouth is bullshit. While I'm sure there's a level of "everyone in wrestling tells this story so it must be true" feelings behind it, who knows how much of it's from stories Jake originally started and folks have forgotten where it came from. The "rape the 12 year old daughter of the grandmother and the being forced to marry her" doesn't really pass the laugh test. John

I've read Dave for 20+ years... and I don't get what he's saying there. The first sentence is clear... after that, he just loses me. John
  10. Employs? Todd gets paid for that stuff? John
  11. Tom: you just need to understand that the NFL is an Entertainment Company. Wins and Losses don't mean anything. The Skins of 2009 were every bit as entertaining as the Skins of 1982, 1987 and 1991 because they made way more gross revenue in 2009. Dan Snyder led the Skins out of Smoke Filed Stadiums. John, very sad that he was a fan of the 1974-88 Dodgers rather than the current Dodgers...

  15. My guess is that Dave had a reader who was following that and kept sending him info. It's not hard to get into the WON with topical tidbits like that. Dave's not likely to be heading over to gobal song chart websites and/or publications. John
  16. I found Dave's comments about ranking fighters being "ridiculous" to be brain numbing. It's both self evident that ranking *anything* subjectively is tough/difficult/goofy and of questionable value at times. On the other hand... we *all* do it. Not just in boxing/MMA, but damn near every facet of life. We've done it since we were kids. Jesus... the whole WON HOF is built on that shit. Shawn being in/out is little more than that. Dave using Murdoch as a in/out dividing line is just that. Match ratings? Folks get defensive about the rankings? Ever seen Dave get defensive about Bret-Owen in the cage being *****? Same shit. Absolutely impossible, stupid and irrelevant? Dave's made a half a career on doing just those type of "analysis" on things. The other half being "reporting". I get Dave's point. Just not sure that he gets than in his over-the-top willingness to throw the concept of MMA rankings under the bus that it would be joined by his own "expert opinion" elements of the WON over the past 28 years as well. John
  17. My head hurts after reading all of that. John
  18. Is the encyclopedia out yet, Jon? John
  19. I thought that was Dave's head photoshopped onto the body until seeing the caption. John
  20. The Brett Hart thing was more than just a review... it was an epic on its own. John
  21. Did anyone ever do to the Russo-WCW book what that great reviewer did to the Bret Hart book? John
  22. I truly doubt that *Lieb* thinks the WWF cost him a shot at being VP. As in 0.00000000000000001%. Regardless of what "high ranking members of the Democratic party" are blowing up Dave's ass about 2000. Take a step back. What had more impact on the outcome of the 2000 Election: 1. Nader being on the ballot 2. WWF It's not close. Remotely close. Same galaxy close. Florida (25 electoral votes) 2,912,790 Bush 2,912,253 Gore 97,488 Nader New Hampshite (4 electoral votes) 273,559 Bush 266,348 Gore 22,198 Nader How many Nader voters would have voted for Bush? They basically fell into two camps: * vote for Gore * stay home Look at those numbers. Even if *most* Nader voters stayed home, Gore needed only a small % to show up to vote for him. 32.5% of Nader voters in NH... 0.6% (!) of Nader voters in FL. Before anyone points to Pat Buchanan being on the ballot: Florida 97,488 Nader 17,484 Uncle Pat New Hampshire 22,198 Nader 2,615 Uncle Pat He wasn't a factor: he didn't bleed from Bush in remotely the fashion that Nader did from Gore. Nader was hardly the only reason Gore lost. It's a laundry list. But on that laundry list, the WWF's impact doesn't have a pot to piss in. Those "high ranking members of the Democratic party" were just blowing smoke, either playing to Dave's pro wrestling-centric vanity or grasping for straws for things to blame the loss on. It didn't pass the laugh test then, nor now. It's the political equiv of "a good diet", which was something Dave would laugh at when a juiced up wrestler explained why his body had changed for the better recently. Dave doesn't have as good of political radar as he has juice-dar. John
  23. The greatest golfer in the world appeared to be addicted to painkillers after various injuries. I don't think any of us would be surprised, nor should Dave be shocked, if a large number of MMA guys have (or end up having) pill issues. It's pretty common in a lot of sports. Lord knows what Wayne Rooney has been on for the past several months since the injury against Bayen... or likely long before that given Wayne's long history of injuries. Not justifying it. Just not terribly spurprised. Nor thinking that more painkillers in MMA would make the MMA = Pro Wrestling claim anymore valid, anymore than Pro Football = Pro Wrestling since we all know the NFL and major College football were far more advanced on painkiller usage and earlier than pro wrestling. John
  24. 04/19/75 Kimura over Vachon for IWE Title 03/28/76 Jumbo vs Kimura MOTY Yeah, I don't get that. Also, Baba beat Rusher at least twice. The piece doesn't give much through to the long ignored All Japan vs IWE feud/rivalry that went from 12/75 through 02/78. John
  25. *jaw drops* The Ali-Fraizer I comp is beyond funny. John
