  1. Saw this in today's WO update: Unless there's a fountain of youth hidden in Japan, the last time I saw Misawa he was pretty broken down. Giving him a major title at this point seems like the puro equivalent of the Hulkamania Nostalgia Tour of a few years ago. I know he runs the company, but this seems to be at near Verne-as-AWA-champ-in-the-80s levels. Besides, I thought Marufuji was supposed to be one of the up and coming stars, does this mean NOAH lost confidence in him as a top guy?
  2. Dave's usually smart enough that when he's writing about things that are rumored to leave them open-ended so no one can nail him on getting something wrong, but I don't blame him for the Angle thing. He had every reason to believe that he was being told the truth, and considering how crazy Angle seems to be these days, it probably was the truth at the time.
  3. Piper was never much in the ring, but I think he has a point when he asks Hogan if they would have loved him as much if he didn't have such a strong heel to play off of. Besides, my favorite WWF 80s moment was when Andre ripped Hulk's cross off on Piper's Pit. Roddy's out-of-character (opposed to the crazy guy he'd been up to that point) response of a quiet "you're bleeding" to Hulk was brilliant. When a guy who spent the earlier part of the decade trying to end Hulkamania can realize that Hulk might be fucked here against Andre really sold the feud to me.
  4. I'll comment on the folks I've seen: Dusty Rhodes: One of my all time favorites. His promos were just on a completely different level than anyone besides Flair. I always thought his matches were surprisingly good for a guy his size. Also, I think his role in the end of JCP is somewhat exaggerated. Yeah, his infamous finish wasn't the biggest help, but Crockett was just outfoxed by Vince at every turn once the PPV era started. Bob Backlund: The more I watch of his 70s work, the more I understand why Vince wanted the belt off him ASAP. Yeah, he was a good wrestler (and I mark for the Gotch Lift every time) but he was like watching paint dry. When he did his crazy Mr. Backlund character in the 90s I was in shock that he could go from zero to awesome in the charisma department. Atlantis: I've only seen the match with Villano III, and it was one of the best matches I've watched. V3 seemed to be past his prime at that point (which was still better than most people), so Atlantis deserves a bigger share of the credit than people seem to give him. Sgt. Slaughter: Too bad most people seem to remember the Iraqi sympathizer gimmick. He was a good brawler who ended up out of the WWF right when he would have been one of the biggest stars. It was probably for the best, as Hogan's All American gimmick would have taken a lot of the steam from Sarge. Plus it gave us the GI Joe figure of him, so it was truly one of the best moves in history. Adrian Adonis: One of the most underrated guys ever. I'm not sure what he did to warrant the Adorable gimmick, but instead of becoming Wrestlecrap he went way into it and made it work. Even at his biggest size, he was still taking crazy bumps like the Flair Flip over the turnbuckles. His work teaming with Jesse Ventura was solid as well. CM Punk: I just don't get the fuss with the guy. I've only seen some of his ROH stuff and most of his ECW work, and I just don't get why he's the New Hotness. His moves seem sloppy and his "strikes" are embarrassing since they hype up his muay thai background (or at least they did). I guess people just want to live vicariously through him since he seems like a genuine nice guy who manages to nail all the hot chicks he comes in contact with. Roddy Piper: He was a little guy who was able to get over at the height of the musclebound steroid freak era just by his promos. He ended up becoming a cartoon by the 90s, but his 80s stuff was golden. I never realized until watching his DVD is that you rarely saw Piper wrestle on WWF TV. That speaks volumes of how well he did his job since you had to pay to see him, and people did. Randy Savage: I'd say he was the best wrestler of the 80s. Considering he never completely escaped Hogan's shadow, it's no wonder he went crazy over the years. I can see how someone wouldn't care for his promo style, but he legit freaked me out as a kid.
  5. You know, HHH and HBK were off my radar for a while, but yet again RAW ends with the two of them laying out Kenny. I'm fully back on the HHHate bandwagon. Hell, I'll drive the mf'er at this point. Honestly, this is quickly becoming Hogan/Nash in WCW level ridiculous. What purpose does it serve for them to lay out Kenny again this week other than to remind people that despite not being in the Spirit Squad outfit, this guy's still a jobber? Maybe it's because I watched Jeter and Doane in OVW and was impressed at what they had to offer, but this complete and total burial of guys who are supposed to be the next era of stars is really getting under my skin. What makes it worse is that SmackDown has had a fairly easy time getting new stars over. Taker made Mr. Kennedy look like a million bucks by taking a beatdown, you think HHH would do that for some up and comer? I'm not saying Kenny should win the WWE title next week, but Jesus Christ, can't he at least get the upper hand for one segment so he can gain a smidge of cred?
  6. Vince vs Heyman is always a fun dynamic. It's obvious they can't get along for any period of time, but Vince seems to be afraid to flat out fire him since he knows TNA would probably sign him in a heartbeat. Heyman knows that Vince will never fire him and takes the opportunity to be the only one in the company who dares to point out that WWE's creative staff sucks ass. It's like wrestling's version of that movie where the two guys escape from prison but are still handcuffed to each other. What I don't get, is what was Vince trying to prove by bringing back ECW in the first place? I know the usual suspects, ego and whatnot, but a big part of what made the old ECW work was that it wasn't what WWF/WCW were offering. Bringing back ECW as WWE Lite and jobbing out the original ECW guys shows a shocking gap in understanding. WWE fans don't see ECW as anything but a jobber show and ECW fans see this new "brand" as an insult. It's like Vince has some sort of learning disability where he's physically incapable of understanding any wrestling show WWF/E didn't create.
  7. Meltz's update read like Dave feeling like he needed to address the situation without really knowing 100% what is going on.
  8. Well lets see, so far TNA has: 1. Promoted a WWE PPV by accepting the Hardys' challenge. 2. Bought tickets for a WWE event. 3. Mentioned WWE more on their website in the last couple weeks than WWE has ever mentioned a competitor ever. Yeah, I'm sure Vince McMahon is sweating over TNA now, they just made him some extra pocket money. I defend TNA more than most people on the internet (mostly because up til now most net complaints have been overexaggerated bullshit) but this stuff is indefensible.
  9. You could tell WWE doesn't care about this show, both by how they placed it a week after one of the Big Four and how they didn't bother to announce any matches other than the main event until the last possible moment. Even then they just threw some shit together. ECW is just looking more and more like a plaything Vince lost interest in and is just being allowed to wither on the vine. The ironic thing is that ECW gets better ratings on Sci-Fi than probably anything else on the network so they'll want WWE to keep it around.
  10. I thought they did a pretty good job with the Edge/Orton team by having Edge acknowledge they've fought in the past but they should put it aside because they've both been screwed by DX. Speaking of, I was much more annoyed by the whole "ship the Spirit Squad back to OVW" segment. What a complete waste of young talent compounded by having the two most politically powerful folks in the company decimate them at every turn and almost literally bury them on TV. Talk about Russoish shooty angles, does any of the average RAW viewership even know what OVW is? HHH and HBK must really have small penises that they're compensating for, I don't think I ever recall guys at the top going out of their way to bury people who posed so little threat to their position. Maybe HBK heard all the talk about Johnny Jeter in OVW being Shawn Michaels-like and wanted to nip that foolishness in the bud. Having said that, all 5 members will probably show up on RAW in the next couple weeks under new names with no mention of their past.
  11. Isn't the old TBS Techwood studio a nightclub now as part of an entertainment complex?
  12. So for those who watched, was the DX match as much of a total job out as the results suggest? I mean, it's not like Mike Knox is going to be the next world champion or anything, but Jesus Christ couldn't team DX drop one fall?
  13. TNA actually invoking the "champ loses the belt on a DQ" for the first time since like the Nashville days was kinda neat in the sense of continuity. They'd mention it from time to time that the champ can lose the belt on a DQ but they haven't done it in like forever. I thought that would get forgotten with Vince "what's a clean finish?" Russo around. I'm not a fan of Russo devaluing titles, but at least stripping LAX of the tag titles makes sense in the storyline. It gives their "held down by the man" gimmick some cred while giving Cornette the chance to do awesome promos ( didn't watch, but it's Cornette so I'm just going to assume if he didn't do one last night there'll be one on Thursday). As far as Angle-Joe goes, I guess it's better to have Joe's first loss come to Kurt Angle rather than Random TNA Wrestler #70 who'll get depushed and forgotten about. Then again, it does kinda make TNA wrestlers look second rate to have their top guy tap out to someone who up until recently was a top WWE guy. That's the kind of shit that cements the WWE > TNA in the average fan's mind.
  14. Why does WWE use that yellow and blue version of the AWA logo? I don't remember the AWA ever using that.
  15. Lita in character fronting her band, The Luchagors: They even have a Myspace page that has some of their tracks up. It's suprisingly good, I like them better than Fozzy. Who would have thought Lita would be the much better 80s butt rock singer than Chris Jericho? *edit* Upon some research, it seems this was from a Halloween performance and they don't usually dress up like that. Still, LitaParka is funny no matter if it's a one time thing or not.
  16. With the NWO, the idea was that guys from the WWF were taking over the company (until WWF sued and that aspect was toned way down) so it wasn't such a potential detriment that Hall and Nash were pushing 40. DX was designed to be the new generation not listening to the old farts anymore (ie their run ins with Commissioner Slaughter and the Hart Foundation).
  17. The flaw with that logic is that most smarks don't seem to back TNA, rather they use them as a replacement for WCW in their non stop and repetitive bashing threads. At the risk of sounding like one of those insufferable "YAY TNA IZ TEH BESTES!" shills/trolls at DVDVR, the smark type are using the same material to bash TNA now that they did in 2002. How long did we hear the same tired "TNA will be dead in *x* weeks" stuff? There's no shortage of legit beefs one can have with the company but most of the complainers rehash the same old shit.
  18. You know, Jeff Jarrett actually seems like a pretty alright guy. He gets way too much shit on the net, some is deserved but I'd wager most isn't. I mean, look at how TNA has come from 2002 to now. They're on national TV every week, PPV monthly, have deals for wrestling figures and DVDs, and working agreements with other groups in different parts of the world (as opposed to how WWE doesn't acknowledge wrestling in other countries unless it's one of their shows). At least they have a plan. Sure, it remains to be seen if it works, but even having a plan would seem to give them a leg up on WWE who's only plan seems to be what amuses Vince's ever crazier mind.
  19. What kills me is JR will spout shit like "wrestling's a young man's game" and other things basically saying if guys can't get over, it's their own fault while at the same time ignoring their top act is a couple of forty(or almost)somethings doing the same gimmick they did 10 years ago. It would have been interesting if they had kept the character development both have had and kept HHH as the ruthless destroyer of men and HBK as the reformed party guy who will superkick your teeth out for Jesus. Instead they're just regressed into a couple of goobers making dick jokes and references to Mike Myers movies.
  20. The one that immediately springs to mind is a tease that Gene Okerlund ran where you had to call the hotline to find out what Davey Boy Smith and Magic Johnson had in common. Holy shit, that's horrible. Obviously Davey Boy didn't have AIDS so what was the punchline if you actually called in?
  21. I know the Andre stories are real, I'm wondering about the Big Show stories. It's pretty interesting that they want to have WM 23 with Hogan-Giant (by proxy) II and the same stories are coming out now that were around back then. I kinda get the vibe that this is sort of a work-the-sheets type of deal since they've never mentioned it on TV or done any storylines that would indicate they're writing Show off like they normally do when someone's leaving. BTW, what was the backup plan for WM III?
  22. I'm wondering if the stories about Show's health aren't being worked a bit. Sure, ECW style has to be hard on a 500 pound body, but this is almost exactly the same stories that circled around WM III, which was very much in doubt due to Andre's back problems. As badly as they want to re-create Hogan/Andre, they just won't be able to. Years of comedy have pretty much robbed Show of having the air of the bad ass unstoppable freak of nature that heel Andre had. Even though it was exaggerated for the storyline, it was still a while since Andre had been beaten or slammed while everyone in the WWE has slammed or beaten Show at some point. Maybe as part of the buildup, Show will be suspended for no showing house shows and we'll see the debut of the Show Machine.
  23. True, but he's an active participant who's dealing with crippling pain (wasn't there something in the last WON about him needing a wheelchair to get around at an airport?).....surely he's not just gritting his teeth or relying on Tylenol. He seems to blow both the "TNA doesn't let hurt guys work" and "TNA doesn't stand for drug use" defenses out of the water singlehandedly.
  24. Odd that when Angle mentioned TNA wouldn't let anyone work hurt that Dave didn't jump on Konnan who's been putting off hip replacement for months now.
  25. This is going to warp the mind of the "OMG YOU HAVE NO PROOF ANGLE TOOK PAINKILLERZ~!" crowd, along with Angle apparently trying to challenge Hogan in the History Re-Writing Olympics: So in this story we find out: Angle was indeed the major addict that everyone was reporting, but was able to quit cold turkey despite taking more painkillers than anyone in wrestling history. He begged WWE for time off, and Vince said no, undoubtedly twirling an imaginary villian moustache whilst saying it. His sister died of a herion overdose despite it being reported at the time she had the same heart problems that killed their father and plauge the Angle family. He claims he knows when it'll be time to retire, despite continuing to work with limb numbness and a painkiller habit that would knock out an elephant. At least he didn't claim he bodyslammed a 700 Big Show in front of 100,000 in Wembley Stadium.
