Was he supposed to job to Sid in Feb '97?. That would have blown the presumed Bret-HBK rematch at WM13 out of the water. The way I recall it was HBK going over and coming into Mania as champ facing Bret who would have won the #1 contender spot at Final Four.

I don't think he even knows anymore.

Great article and very very sad.

Interesting comparison, and I'll add that I felt not revealing Maris' face was a mistake on the Frasier finale. Even moreso on the original joke with Norm's wife Vera on Cheers. I always thought the perfect way to go out of the Cheers finale would be while Norm and Sam are having their little moment together at the end, Vera walks into the bar to drag Norm out and she's an absolute bombshell. Norm begrudgingly goes with her while Sam has his jaw on the floor and looking around like "no one else is going to believe this". To apply it to the Streak, when Taker's ready to retire, be it next year 2 years or whenever then he really should lose and end the streak. Vince and the writers shouldn't be so afraid of living up to the hype or mystique or what have you of the streak that it intimidates them from writing the final chapter. There's a "Lost" comparison in there somewhere but I'm not of the right mind to see it through.

Losing the ring would probably be a plus for them at this point. That way, they can have the celebrity host come and do an opening monologue, run video packages, then someone can come out to a 5 minute entrance, and do a promo which gets interrupted by someone else having a 5 minute entrance. A couple of people can hit their big move or use a chair, then the host can wrap it up at the end. Vince finally gets to have his own real-life version of The Muppet Show.
-
Why do they bother having a ring anymore? Seems like it just gets in the way.

Flair said in his shoot that he nixed bringing Tully back because they were going to give him more money then Arn was making. Although I wonder why it was easier to not bring Tully in at all then to argue for a raise for Arn.

Lesnar for his part maintains there's a legit personal beef between him and Calloway: http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/03/28/broc...oaching-tuf-13/

TNA finally sends Jeff Hardy home after ruining PPV main event

I don't know either story. Why would Bruno or Cornette go crazy about Vince offering rehab? -
Goldberg-Steiner from Fall Brawl was a lot of fun.

I think Backlash still would have done a huge number with Rock-HHH with Rock as champ and the Austin involvement. I remember WM2000 as the first time I watched Mania with a group of people who left the event totally deflated. Even WMXV as terrible as it was had the feel-good Austin ending. Something similar happened the next year with Austin going heel but there was enough other cool shit on the card (and the match itself) to save it.
-
This, plus being able to go further more quickly with continued international expansion plus there was another similarly numbered offer on the table for Strikeforce.

Savage also screwed up by eliminating himself in the Rumble prior (although they looked the other way). Maybe the gimmick is the wildman Savage just can't understand the Rumble rules

[1996-11-17-WWF-Survivor Series] Shawn Michaels vs Sid
Dooley replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
I remember watching this as a 16 year old with my friends and we were all going nuts for Sid and loving it that the MSG crowd saw things our way. We'd all had more than enough of the "boy toy" at that point and it was hard not to root for a guy with the look, attitude and charisma of Sid.- 20 replies

Why did Shawn lose his temper in the match? He saw where Vader was, signaled for the flying elbow then gave up on it in mid-air and yelled at Vader. Was Vader supposed to wriggle into a better position or something?

I like Garvin but there's no way he should have had that title run. 1987 was arguably the height of the wrestling boom and on the WWF's show you have larger-than-life superhero Hulk Hogan as champion. Turn the channel to the NWA and the champ is some short dude that looks like one of your dad's poker buddies.

Which is equally ridiculous. Sure UFC's a global juggernaut but to suggest the rest of the sport isn't benefiting as well is selective memory on Dav's part of haw far underground the sport used to be. I think Dave just doesn't understand sports.
-
I know it's a joke, but Dave thinking anyone in contemporary North America has a better idea of who Rick Martel is than what Strikeforce is shows exactly how clueless he is about MMA. Their last card just set a viewership record, yet Dave (or whoever is in his ear) is determined to write them off as not even the same sport. I loved Johnny's inference that everything is pro wrestling, but only UFC can be MMA.

I don't believe it is. UFC 129 is a possible million buy event.

[1996-11-25-WWF-Raw] Interview: Shawn Michaels & Jose Lothario
Dooley replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
This was meant to give Shawn an "edge" after the reaction he got at Survivor Series. Essentially trying to do the tweener thing Diesel had a year prior. But other than his ultra-snarky commentary appearance at the next IYH PPV it all got thrown out the window by the Royal Rumble when he was back to being smiley happy Shawn, before ironically losing his smile a month later.- 11 replies

It was something they had decided beforehand. Nash has joked that he's amazed it got over despite Hogan screwing up and calling it the "new world organization" more than once in his heel turn promo.

I wonder if Dave is really starting to alienate both "halves" of his base. The pro wres half seems to resent his constant covering of MMA, and MMA folk seem to resent him wanting to turn everything into pro wres.
-
I thought it was implied given that Dave's post seemed to be in response to "He's been at it all day, pure DVDVRing up the place crying about MMA" as his post immediately followed that post and Dave talked about them not him. Guess I was mistaken. What does/would that even mean anyway?
-
Yeah it's great that he judges the fight by rules that didn't exist yet. Besides, if it were under MMA rules, it's not like the ref would have forced Inoki to stand up or anything.
-
Beat me to it. Especially since he actually runs into Hall and Nash first, but turns his back on them to express his shock and dismay at his fallen comrade.
