I find it a little strange that you think the Valentine feud is central to any Garvin vote, because I think it's much more of an after thought. His series of matches with Flair is up there with anyone's -- look beyond the Starrcade match to the studio match from 85 and his title win in 87. Garvin has other great performances too against people like Tully and tagging with Windham vs. the Midnights. I think Garvin has a shot at my list, but I need to dig a bit deeper. What was he doing in Poffo's ICW before his JCP run? What did he do in Georgia that made tape? Is that Larry Z match any good? Depending on the answers to those questions, I can see Garvin finishing in the 80-100 range for me, based on the strength of his work in Crockett.

Well, shit, I didn't realise that my comment would cause all this. I just think that "Bigelow is the number 2 best big man ever" is one of those received opinions that seldom gets challenged. Ditch might have come off as being snarky or whatever with his "haven't heard of Jerry Blackwell" comment, but let's face it, we know what he's talking about. It's not elitism, it's just the brutal fact of it. jdw said it correctly, the vast majority of fans out there don't venture beyond WWF/E and don't care to. You run this poll in some places and Shawn Michaels is your number 1 and you don't have Misawa, Kawada and co listed at all. Why? Because the guys don't know anything about Japanese wrestling. I have no problem saying that at all, because it's just true. I don't know where this defensiveness is coming from.

Mick, start with those matches vs The Funks from 77-79. I love the 78 one in particular but that is just a phenomenal series. I think the performances from him and Sheik are a masterclass in heel psychology and how to generate heat. Those matches pretty much made the Funks in Japan from what I gather.

Bruno is better on the mat than you think; he has better psychology thank you think; he's better at selling than you think; he's better at making a fired up comeback than practically anyone I can think of, including Rick Martel and Hulk Hogan. One of my biggest surprises over the past year has been just how much I've loved watching Bruno work. It will seem crazy to some that Backlund is probably not making my top 100, but Bruno probably is. But he was just a master at what he did.

Any Titans of Wrestling show on WWF in 1980 features a lot of praise for Larry Z performances. Although the feud with Bruno (one of the all-time GREAT feuds anywhere ever) is driven by promos, Larry's heel performances in the matches, his character work especially, is just great. You are watching someone elevate themselves from midcarder to main eventer.

Hmm, it sure looked that way.

More hardcore than than your average fan, less hardcore than your sickos. There's a sliding scale with your buddy from school who watched wrestling "back in the day" as the most casual fan possible with someone like Dylan at the other end.

Less a myth and more a question: did we ever get an official or ratified version of what happened to Hogan's eye before Wrestlemania 9? I'll wager it wasn't IRS who did it.

Brody would sell for guys like Dory and Baba though because there were in positions of power (or for whatever other reason). I like the match with Dory a good bit as well as his tag with Snuka vs. The Funks (from 12/13/81). Trouble is, those are the exceptions to the general rule. If anything they make it worse: it shows that it was a conscious decision of his not to sell 95%+ of the time. So he actively chose to have worse matches 95% of the time.

Williams was terrible in WCW in my view. Especially in 88-9.

Sounds pretty good to me.

I think Bigelow continues to be one of the most overrated guys among ... casual hardcore fans. You know what I mean by that.
-
So you chaps are considering promo ability in your criteria?
-
True, I just ignore all of that rambling praise of Dory Funk you have posted. It is sad that when so many of us are being so open minded about all this, you remain closed-minded. You're a wrestling bigot, goodhelmet. I'd also be surprised if you don't like that Sheik-Abby series, or the matches with Horst Hoffman. Don't you like his Lawler match? Blind prejudice.

Look on the bright side Will, at least he read it.

For what it's worth, as much as I've ragged on Jimmy Jam era Freebirds, Hayes mostly holds up his end of things in 90 and 91. Still throws a mean punch. Still has good timing. Great DDT. Good at selling. It's mostly Garvin who is putrid. "Yeah yeah yeah yeah" Singles push 89 Hayes is pretty great.
-
That's the sort of bad, closed-minded attitude I'm fighting against here. Blind anti-Dory prejudice.

How about the Martel / Zenk match and all of the others? That's right Will, I'm saying you underrepresented Funk on AJPW.

Yes! Yes! -
This isn't about Murdoch but about Terry Funk, but the spot that PeteF3 and I are talking about here where Hawk no sells the piledriver, then Terry tries to despite obviously being dazed-as-hell is one of the funniest comedy spots I've ever seen. While you're there Will, you might answer some of my questions about the omissions from the All Japan set. I am reserving judgement on Murdoch for now till I've seen everything.

Yes, because Flair works de facto face in those matches and so can work an underdog against-the-odds narrative and get the crowd behind him, whereas Sting is always face and so it's just cookie cutter Flair-by-the-numbers. If you watch Flair vs. Nikita again, they kind of work a Rocky vs. Mr. T narrative. Wereas what's the narrative with the Sting matches? Let's watch Flair get Gorilla press slammed for the 17th time while they run the clock down. I still have no idea why Clash 1 is routinely given five stars.

You can see where the confusion might lie. Guy called Daniel who knows his Puro from "down there".

50's & 60's "Wrestling from Chicago" footage

It's the white / blonde hair and big grin that are Bock-like to me, not so much the personality. Although now you mention it, Super Macho Man looks a bit like Billy Graham the evangelical preacher. And also a bit like Joe Biden. And now I mention all that, I think that Bockwinkel looks a bit like Joe Biden too. -

Bit off-topic Al, and I mentioned this before somewhere, but for some reason Nick Bockwinkel really reminds me of Super Macho Man from Super Punchout!! (see here) -
Dynamite Kid has got to be a pure work HOFer no? He was a 96 fiat right?
