  1. I'm not surprised that my take on the TLC six-man is a minority one. But I am somewhat surprised that I've come across literally no substantial criticism of the match. To me, this is as good evidence as any of the baleful legacy of ECW. Everyone seems to have forgotten what a wild brawl should look like.
  2. It should be noted that Phil is rather liberal in his ratings with guys whose shtick he's a fan of. It seems like any match where Lawler plays hide-the-chain gets at least a Great rating.

You couldn't have missed my point more egregiously if you had tried. I'm pointing out that most right-wingers do, in fact, believe that most of their fellow citizens are lazy and entitled.
  4. Gimmick matches in general tend to suck because they limit what the wrestlers can do and force them into various stock spots. With triple threat matches in particular, there's only two storylines you can really do. 90% of the time, it's "one guy gets taken out, the other two fight, the third guy comes back right when one of them gains the advantage, repeat until it's time to take it home." The other one is one guy getting double-teamed the whole match.

I seriously doubt a "significant portion" of the WWE audience are the types of people who agree with the idea that Americans are all fat, lazy, and entitled. "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them. Who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing...I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
  6. Wouldn't the obvious solution be to have Rock beat Punk and Cena win the Rumble?
  7. Triple threat matches suck and should be avoided under all circumstances.
  8. I decided to check out the six-man TLC after what seemed to be universal praise. I thought it was a good enough car-crash match but not a MOTYC. I kept hearing about how wild and chaotic it was, but all the contrived Rube Goldberg-esque stunt spots seriously took away from that. And as with all WWE multi-man matches, there was the issue of guys disappearing for extended stretches and then reappearing when it was convenient. I did like Daniel Bryan busting out the No Lock on all three Shield guys in succession.

I'll respond to SLL later, but the problem with the anti-American gimmick is that if he makes his case with any degree of specificity, he's going to end up saying things that a significant portion of the audience agrees with. Not to mention the fact that he's basically a babyface in every other country.
  11. Personally, I think all the women should go away entirely. None of them can work worth a damn, and they don't work as accessories to men's storylines because man-on-woman violence is prohibited. Anyway, I really hope Dolph makes the superkick his finisher. A credible finisher is exactly what he needs to go to the next level.
  12. Haven't people been predicting AJ turning and forming a heel power couple with someone for like the past year?
  13. Was Moncrief ever even the third-best player in the Eastern Conference?

  15. What was the story with this? Was it presented as if the wrestlers booked their own matches and Owen just signed the checks?

I forgot to mention another problem with this: The problem with this line of thinking is that adults tend to be more stable in their viewing and purchasing habits. Children, on the other hand, are more likely to follow the latest fad. In fact, that's largely what has happened.
  17. All I know is that Dustin should've named her Target, because I heard everybody in Atlanta had a shot at it!
  18. So it looks like the right-wing party is splitting into UMP Hollywood and UMP Wolfpac. Does that make Francois Hollande the Sting of French politics?
  19. Just about any kind of major success is due at least in part to dumb luck, both in wrestling and elsewhere. What if the MSG Incident never happened and Austin never got the micard push that was supposed to go to HHH? What if Shawn never lost his smile and Austin never had the submission match with Bret? What if there hadn't been a huge walk-up crowd the day of the first Wrestlemania and it had bombed as a result? What if Stephanie never discovered that John Cena could rap? Seriously, how far are we going to go with the what-if game? Are people going to push for David Von Erich and Magnum TA based on the careers they could have had?
  20. I asked because of what Dylan posted at WC. I wasn't trying to be dismissive, I was genuinely curious. Anyway, I don't know if Dylan has addressed this, but it occurred to me that being the biggest draw in Portland history might not be worth all that much. It seems to me that most guys who establish themselves as strong draws wouldn't stick around in a small territory like Portland for too long because they could make more money elsewhere.
  21. Since this thread was bumped, I'll mention a couple of matches I came across a while back that I dug. Jaguar Yokota vs. Devil Masami (7/19/82)-I don't know if this is better than the 8/22/85 match with Chigusa, but I think it's a better Devil performance. She's more clearly heelish, with an emphasis on brawling and roughhouse tactics. The finish sucks, but that's par for the course for the early 80s. Takako Inoue vs. Mariko Yoshida (8/18/91)-Takako starts the match by destroying Yoshida's leg. Yoshida manages to come back, but she re-injures her leg during a tope, and Takako gets the submission. You don't see body part work paid off like that too often in joshi. At least, I haven't.
  22. Who's the guy who thinks that Buddy Rose was an all-time top five worker?
  23. Where the hell do you guys live where being a janitor provides tons of money and prestige? It's pretty much the definitive low-skill low-wage job, the kind of thing you warn your kids they're going to end up becoming if they don't take school seriously.
  24. For what it's worth, I recant my hyperbolic praise for this match. I don't know what the hell I was thinking.
