I'd never heard of these guys beforehand. When I saw the surroundings I was suddenly looking forward to it because I thought it was going to be a comically bad, bottom of the barrel indy trainwreck. After a few minutes of passable action I realised it wasn't bad, or good either. So I moved onto the next match.

If you wanted a comp to show how diverse pro wrestling can be then this would be a good pick. I came in not knowing what to expect, and was royally entertained by 2 unknown Russians. As an aside has any Russian wrestler ever not had a copious amount of chest hair? Anyway this was a learning experience for the crowd too who were enjoying it as much as me. Some exciting submissions early on and plenty of unusual moves and sumplexes. It wasn't at all polished yet that added to its effectiveness.

[1992-08-12-NJPW-G1 Climax] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Keiji Muto & Kensuke Sasaki
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
The Steiners were in an unusually good mood. There were some fun moments and nice suplay. A bit on the sloppy side though.- 12 replies

[1992-08-12-NJPW-G1 Climax] Jushin Liger vs Wild Pegasus
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
The matwork passed the time but failed to inspire. All about the bonzo gonzo which was good and featured an amazing top rope gutwrench jumping powerbomb. Shallow Junior fun.- 12 replies

Well here's one for all the ADD fans who get restless if a hold is applied for more than 20 seconds, and have helped shape contemporary wrestling into a dreadful monopaced style. A hold that lasted 4:37 is what launched this match to greatness. In the early matwork Charles began attacking the left arm. It didn't affect the result of the first 2 falls which saw some nice flying. Emilio looks so unfasionably old school that it seems he shouldn't be as good an athlete as he is. Things get awesome in the 3rd with the epic Waki-Gatame. Atlantis kept struggling to the ropes was pulled away time and again. The fans got more and more behind him and were rabid in their support towards the end of this match within a match. From ther the combatents took it on to an amazing stretch. Mark out near falls as I had no idea when it would end. The selling of the arm was superb as was the exhaustion showed by both men. A wonderful epic and my favourite match from Mexico this year.

[1992-08-08-WCW-Saturday Night] Big Van Vader vs Ron Simmons
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
The career highlight for the All American out of Florida State (thanks x100 JR). He had a good look and was explosive, but wasn't a notable worker and was terrible on the mic. Only 9m long was a good idea. A super fun TV match because the crowd were scorchio. They worked a simple underdog format with Vader roughing up the challenger before Simmons came back for the fluke pin. With the surprise factor I think they pulled off the switch as well as possible. It was a geniune shock to the fans and that kid marking out was a wonderful moment.- 18 replies

They established a heated rivalry and a strong face-heel dynamic. Kosh looked good with the shaven head and beard, he should've kept the look. He ended up wearing the crimson mask. An exciting contest that kept moving and had strong rivalry psychology. Chono won convincingly because his opponant was weakened by blood loss. Very good.

I wasn't that familiar with him, but before watching I was under the impression that Lizmark sucked. He did.

19 of 32m shown and we jump straight into the Kikuchi beatdown. Fuchi is a sadistic bastard. There was also an excellent Kobashi knee segment. Ratboy had a weak offense but was fine in the #4 role. The other 3 shone. It was such a twisting, winding epic with a multilayered story. I was never sure what was going to happen next. It wasn't as crisp or streamlined as other top matches, being more sprawling and organic in structure. It had great psychology, told a story and was always exciting. I loved it.

The way it started I thought it might be going high end. Kopylov's selling was most convincing and he was strong on the mat. Some nice technique exchanges and the crowd was very appreciative. The main problem turned out to be the balding Russians cardio as he was gassed early. It went downhill and was ultimately a slight letdown after initially promising so much.

I remember when people used to think that Rude was a poor worker. He was superb in 1992. Here he looked like such a champion whilst also putting over the babyfaces big moves. This was a match that was looking promising with all 4 performing well. Unfortunately the beatdown was overlong and then the microstretch. Don't get me started about the hot tag format.

Had a fresh feel as they'd probably never worked together and were doing it on the fly. A real mixed bag with numerous fun moments but some equally poor ones as well. All over the place. Koloff was just about adequate technically, with good ring presence. A poor mans Goldberg?

Certainly not aesthetically pleasing. Ken bled and it was a deliberately ugly battle. There was plenty of dislike going on and it was intense. Reasonable, but I didn't find it particularly enjoyable.

Foley was a complete nut doing all those dives onto the concrete. It made me cringe just watching it. What I liked about this was that there was athletisism in addition to the hardcore element. Action packed with no wasted motion.

Refreshingly different with a real air of legitimacy. Both sides utilised their amateur credentials to produce an interesting stylistic mix. The 2 teams certainly didn't look like the best of friends either. Both units felt they had something to prove. A strong first meeting that wouldn't be bettered, and yeah that chop block was perfectly timed.

Beef? Biff? Whatever his name is he really struggled against Liger with some downright ugly moments. The other 3 provided Junior highspots with plenty of aerial warfare. For some reason they kept going out to the floor constantly. It's kind of like they were instructed in the back to do this so the commentators could go on about no mats. Strange.

Effectively the end of the Jumbo era. I couldn't watch his later matches on the yearbook. He looked really sick and I didn't feel comfortable viewing. Taue and Kobashi had a keen rivalry going. The man in red proved here that he was no weak link anymore and was coming into his own as a worker. I would say all 4 men delivered strong performances here. Jumbo just did the subtle little things so well, and he still would've had several good years in him had he been able to wind down his career normally. The build was consistantly good and then a long and winding stretch. You were never sure if they would kick out at 2.9 or be saved by their partners. Excellent.

Not close to their Carny match from April. Kawada had his knee damaged early yet managed to stay on even terms with the champion. There was a bit too much time spent outside the ring. Generally good but the latter stages were a bit of a letdown. In the end the Texan went over with conviction.

It had it's moments and Grizzled Vet was super over. That's Perro Aguayo in case you're wondering. I love that guy with his fluffy boots. Alas the match was also very messy at times and descended into mask related lameness.

A fun little match with the fans hot for it. Entertaining action, shame about the screwy finish. Typical US heel win. Jesse Venture reminded me on this set why he's my all time favourite commentator that I can understand.

An all time classic and one of those magical nights in wrestling history. This was the greatest crowd of all time and you had 3 of the wrestlers delivering career best performances. The execution was top notch, the structure was spot on, the pacing flawless. The FIP segment was timed to perfection and I'd forgotten how amazing the stretch is. Thrilling near falls, fantastic double team moves and such emotion with of course the right result. Of course the Kikuchi beatdown was awesome but that was just the start. Even with a regular AJ crowd from the era this would probably end up in my top 10 for the year they worked the match so well. As it is this is my #2 for 92.

This used to be one of my favourite matches back in the day. Whilst it still has entertainment value it's not half as good as I used to think it was. I like stiff work but some of this was the wrong kind of stiffness and downright dangerous. The match had no downtime at all, it was non-stop high impact moves. Spectacular for sure and absorbing in its brutality. The downside is that there was no structure or pacing, just move after move. Matches need to have a beginning, middle and end. Memorable and entertaining at times but not a classic.

They shared out the offense. I'd rather see Kikuchi dominated. Quick paced match with little downtime. Jumbo was particularly fun with the boo-ing. Was starting to wear out its welcome towards the end but they accomplished what they set out to do.

Such a refreshing contrast to the clean and shiny HD wrestling of today. This was a low grade handheld cam, the ring was absolutely filthy, and it was held in front of a rowdy bunch of Mexicans who had probably downed a few tequilas that day. This was probably the highlight of Espanto's career as he defeats a huge star. He seems like a career midcarder, someone who could work but lacked starpower. I would guess that this was held in front of his hometown fans with the support he was getting. I liked the technical opening fall. The action after that was good without being exceptional. I know Santo was putting him over but they really overdid the near falls and it was unrealistic. Nevertheless a memorable match and a feelgood moment.

[1992-04-17-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Stan Hansen vs Mitsuharu Misawa
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
1st half was a bit scrappy and took a while to click. It did have the brutal hard hitting in its favour. Man I can never get over how stiff puroresu used to be. Misawa worked quite a defensive match by trying to neutralise the left arm. That was a foolish strategy as Hansen was willing to injure it to win such an important contest. Improved the longer it went and came together nicely at the end. A worthy final.- 13 replies
