  1. This was a really good angle that made Money Inc look like heartless bastards whilst turning Jimmy Hart face. Unfortunately the injuries inflicted failed to end Beefcake's career.
  2. Cheatum is a legend. He should've been a regular on TV. OK maybe not. The part that made me laugh most was the "Vader" chants, but the whole thing was pretty awesome. That "Cold" line was an absolute killer put-down.

    1990 hype!

This set is so exciting for me because I've watched the 3 Japanese 80's DVDR sets and want to continue the journey on from them. All Japan, New Japan and UWF were all red hot in 1989 and I didn't want the 80's to end!
  6. Comments have been moved...
  7. Super hot match with such a quick pace it just flew by. Poor Fukuoka took a real asskicking. Hotta was inspired, and the interpromotional war relit a fire in her that was often missing in the early 90's. Takako was entering her prime and this was her best performance to date. And Oz was out of this world awesome. Thrilling from start to finish. it's easy to forget how great these matches were when you haven't watched them in a while. Bring on 1993.
  8. It's my MOTY. It's lots of peoples MOTY. I don't need to tell everyone how great this is. What I noticed on this viewing was how they integrated parts of the old JWP style into the match. It was structured with moves segments alternating with hold segments. This provided the perfect counterbalance to the AJW teams Go Go Go style, which would never have worked over a 42m match.
  9. How ironic that Bison would retire on the very night that the career of her partner and classmate should reach it's pinnacle. Of course the Beasty Lady would return once time had healed some wounds. I said about the April match that these 2 were not well matched opponants in singles. I stand by that. It's what makes it all the more amazing that they produced such an excellent match on this day. Kong was good, but this is one of the best performances of Bulls career. She made the match what it was and was so classy in putting over Aja big time. Great play off the previous finish before Aja levelled up and put the champion away with her own move. Wonderful postmatch scenes, very emotional. It was such an historic occasion with the only WWWA title change in a 5 year period. A definitive changing of the guard moment on a night where AJW and the whole of Joshi Puroresu entered a new era. I don't see how they could have done this any better. Years ago when I first watched this it didn't have half as much impact. I appreciated it so much more after following the journey of the Nakano era.
  10. Their January meeting hadn't quite delivered, and they improved a fair bit this time around. A full length encounter with a decent stretch, particularly the finisher. I couldn't pick out any major problems, it just wasn't quite as high level as I remembered. Perhaps a more focused build? Something didn't quite click for me as lots of people have called this a semi classic match over the years. I'd still have it top 50 for the year.
  11. Kong and Kyoko were quite dominant with Yamada taking a long beatdown early. Going 27m was overlong. There was a fun segment with everyone dodging Toyota's dropkicks. Her psionic abilities never did seem to work on Aja. I always call them the psionic dropkicks. Manami is even more extraordinary than you could have imagined. Overall it was in the G-VG range with decent work from all and a nice stretch. A worthy BLT (Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato) final, and a fitting way to round off the 1st year of Zenjo's 92-95 golden era.
  12. The greatest match of Debbie Malenko's curtailed career. She stepped it up and didn't look out of place, her sharp submissions adding some spice. Hasegawa as well was on her 'A' game with strong intensity and execution. I loved how she held back the exploider until the final minute. In a tag environment these girls had such deep movesets that they didn't even had to pull everything out in a 30m draw. The WWWA TT champs were on red hot form as we would see later in the month. The quality level was consistant throughout and it was a breeze to watch. Not high end but really good.
  13. My 25th favourite Joshi match of the year so I'd say it's worth its spot on the set at the low end. 25m+ of decent action with a hierarcial structure. One thing that jumped out at me was how Yoshida lacked credibility against the 2 monsters. Yamada flash pinning Bull and Aja busting Hotta's mouth were the best moments. I'm generally not a big fan of 6 man tags. They suffer from the lack of downtime and are usually having to keep the action coming to fight off the underlying dullness of the format. It's also very rare that they feel important like big time singles and tag matches.
  14. Kong vs Yamada which isn't on the set is comfortably the best match from the show. Yoshida did a fair bit of body part work, targetting the leg. It wasn't very good. She kept releasing holds after a few seconds like she was worried the fans would get bored. They'll be interested if the mat work is purposeful. The later stages didn't quite click either with multiple repeated moves. Not a bad match by any means but it wasn't well planned.
  15. Amazing physical effort by Yamada after competing in the previous match. The AJW athletes were superbly trained and conditioned, with these 2 amongst the best. It probably even enchanced the match as going under 20m instead of another lengthy battle was ideal. I liked how countering moves because of familiarity was a recurrant theme. Nice build. The transition to the stretch was a little quick, needed a bit more middle. And then it was a full on 2.9 count thriller as they threw everything at one another. The finish played off their previous bout superbly. I love when they do that. Excellent match quality. The dramatic and emotional scenes postmatch are amongst the most memorable moments of the year.
  16. Pointless tag tournament. A very strange contest as the Hokuto/Yamada team were having philosophical issues. Yamada wanted to wrestle straight up, Hokuto wanted to cheat. It's no surprise they were beaten with conviction. More about building the two singles feud than having a strong match, which was unusual for AJW.
  17. A huge improvement from their previous bouts, showing how both wrestlers were coming of age. I liked how they started scientifically and gradually turned from partners into fierce rivals as it progressed. Wonderful technique and harsh physicality. Yamada layed in the kicks, but Toyota fought back in spectacular style. Plenty of well thought out sequences and the execution was strong this time out. I would've preferred if they'd finished it around the 17-18m mark. Great way to round off one of the best shows of the year, and perfect setup for their classic 2 months down the line.
  18. Red hot start as they tore into each other with stiffness and brutality. Bison soon wore the crimson mask, yet it wasn't as one sided as you might expect. Aja controlled the flow and protected Bisons weaknesses in singles. A hate filled fight always got the best out of Kimura as she didn't have a great moveset. This match put over Aja so strong. What kind of monster would do this to her own tag partner?!
  19. Kyoko and Hokuto were okay. Takako was treated like a useless punching bag. Bull was awful, about as bad as I've seen her. Lariat after lariat after lariat. Go learn some new moves.
  20. Super fun AJW workrate style. Everyone brought it and combined seamlessly. Practise makes perfect. Like others have said this was more about Hasegawa and Yoshida than the 2 higher ranked girls. Yoshida was on fire at this point. I love when Sakie nails those meaty spin kicks. I'd call this a top of the range 'B' match. It wasn't as strong as the main event from this show which everyone needs to see.
  21. This is such an insult to Muta, having to go so long against a Jabroni like Armstrong.
  22. The fans clearly thought there was a realistic chance of a title change going in. Aja took the fight to the champion as she bloodied the champion and worked a control segment. Phase 2 was the same except they switched roles. During the stretch when Kong kicked out of Bull's finisher it looked like it was her time. Yet Bull added a rare move to her repertoire and won with a moonsault. Fans were rightly chanting her name afterwards. Though it was well constructed these 2 are not well matched opponants in singles. Super heavyweights need someone to dominate.
  23. Quite the mixed bad here. Had its plus points but not one of the best from their long rivalry. There was a fair bit of matwork in the early going. It didn't take that long though before the pacing reached lightening speed. Both girls had huge movesets and the execution was good here also. They certainly weren't lacking in big match ambition either, going full out for a classic. That wouldn't happen as severe structural problems arose in the 15-20m period. The fake stretch was poorly done. They should never have gone back to holds instead of doing the finish. That hurt it badly. Still fun despite its flaws.
  24. When the time limit expired. Watching the 80's Other Japan set recently has certainly improved my tolerance and appreciation for lengthy shoot style. Anjoh was the more experienced and more balanced fighter. Tamura had few strikes or sumplexes, but was a wizard on the ground. It was mainly submissions and high quality matwork. The fans were really into it. Given that 30m isn't ideal I thought they did the best they could with the pacing. It was such a tough match physically. The youngster tired a lot more and I loved how he just managed to cling on at the death with 1pt remaining. Very good overall.
  25. The tournament may not have been prestigious, but who cares as it's Sting vs Vader. They matched up so well. Sting's height made him look credible. Early on his offensive flurries proved very effective, not to mention exciting. Before long though the big man had gained control and was laying into his opponant with brutality. Sting took a pounding, yet even egged Vader on whilst he blocked forearms. Rope-a-dope baby as the monster punched himself out. Fantastic match, very enjoyable. The finish wasn't bad but was inconclusive. Had they taken it on 5m and used the Scorpion Deathlock it could've been even better. I guess they wanted to hold a little something back for next time.
