  1. It's amazing they used to have such long TV matches, not that I'm complaining. It started off really hot with fast paced action and an excited audience. They worked hard and went full out. Probably a bit too much as they slowed down once they tired and the quality went on a slight negative trajectory as in progressed. The ending wasn't done right. Pretty good overall.
  2. You had the size and strength of the Americans against the speed and explosiveness of the Japanese team. Hase showed great toukon as his existing head wound was unsurprisingly targetted. Him vs Vader was the primary focus. Action packed and a good quality level throughout. There was a long tornado stretch that was unwieldy at times.
  3. Not deficient in the stiffness department as they layed into each other with forearms. Gordy always looked stoned but knew what he was doing in there. The pacing was good and it was a satisfying overall match. Gordy used the powerbomb a bit too early as once Misawa survived that it was always going to be his day.
  4. I watched this several years ago and have no desire to sit through it again. Some of the best NJ matches of the 80's were singles elimination. But the format just didn't work for tag wrestling. From what I recall the first fall was the strongest and it was all downhill from there with Rusher stinking it up the last 2 falls.
  5. More red hot All Japan action from the first half of 1992. A knock down, drag out slobberknocker. Right from the start they were laying into each other and continued to do so throughout this bruising battle. Some really exciting exchanges and high end work. At one stage it looked like it could go on to be a real classic. I would've liked Dangerous K to go a bit closer to victory. In my top 20 for the year.
  6. Separated at birth? Aside from his similarity to a Star Trek monster I thought Espectrito was a really good rudo. So was the Pirate. Misteriocito looked like a good athlete and Sagrada is adorable. That little guy always makes me mark out. It was a fun match that had it's high points, but got messy and bogged down at stages. There's much better to come from the midgets in future years.
  7. Another fancam which is fine if they're good quality. They often aren't. A solid enough 24m over the 3 falls. The pacing was pedestrian. Tenryu didn't show much offense at all as Flair just attacked the leg. Using the same finisher twice doesn't cut it.
  8. Would've been much better if they'd just let them wrestle. It was going very nicely as they'd established a hot rivalry with all the buildup. They battled back and forth with switches in momentum. Sadly the latter stages was marred by sportz entertainment sillyness, which meant the Savage title win wasn't the blowoff it should've been.
  9. Lively and plenty of fun. Went just the right length and they had established rivalries to play off. I liked how they were building to future matches rather than just having a standard throwaway 6 man.
  10. Nice to have such strong crowd heat for shoot style, it felt important. Han wasn't just a mat wizard as he showed some lightening quick strikes as well. Maeda was also more than proficient in both departments. Good match here and there's the potential for better in future rematches.
  11. Another tremendous match in this classic rivalry. They went full out in a 30m war that never looked like a draw. High workrate throughout and well paced. They stepped things up in the 2nd half and both fighters took no end of punishment. Bomb throwing and teriffic selling all around. They fought to a standstill and I was marking out at the awesome commentary at the climax. It's really sick that they had 2 or 3 better singles matches against each other.
  12. Love Machine had no end of charisma and looked competant on offence. Was his selling always this bad though? Panther was a top class worker. They had the crowd going and it was a fun match before the extremely anticlimactic finish. One of those ideas that might have looked okay on paper.
  13. Quick start as the man in red jumps his future partner. They had a strong rivalry going in the early 90's that I'm looking forward to seeing it on the 90 and 91 sets. They kept a fast paced going, yet it didn't quite engage me until the high level closing stretch. Kawada was the stronger figher but Taue just seemed to want it that bit more. With a flurry of chokeslams he scored the upset.
  14. A solid 'B' match. They didn't go all the way through the gears. There were some nice strikes and the finish was quite good. At this time they hadn't established a rivalry.

    1990 hype!

It's a race against time. Baby vs Yearbook.
  16. Not one for the weak of heart. Send the women and children to bed. It's slobberknocker time. JR commentating on 90's All Japan is an interesting thought. Wasn't pretty or flowing for the build, yet the stiffness made it absorbing. Hard blows to the head from both combatents. It all came together nicely as it progressed. Misawa survived a lot of damage and they teased the title change. He'd have to wait half a year for that to happen. The man in green and white was more than ready.
  17. Rude was such a great heel. A nice technical battle with both men utilising body part attacks as well as general strikes and wear down holds. They remembered to sell the damage too. The build was superior to the stretch as they didn't transition it into a dramatic finish. They weren't helped by the booking in that regard. Nevertheless a quality encounter.
  18. A nicely understated match that I very much appreciated. They never left the ring, never cheated and didn't even run the ropes much. All the action took place in the heart of the squared circle. They created a certain intimacy and drew the viewer in. The moves were hard hitting and not too flashy. They stripped things down and produced a keen sporting contest between 2 evenly matched peers. On this day Hash got a degree of payback for the G1. There would be many battles down the line.
  19. Beforehand I may have dismissed the hype over this match as semi educated 90's fans seeing a very good match and thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread. Liger was unknown coming in but spent little time getting over with the popcorn munchers. They worked a more even pacing than they would do in Japan, whilst still retaining a good structure. It was aerial warfare with both Ju... Light Heavyweights flying all over the place. Aside from the odd spot you'd have thought they'd have worked together more. Liger was amazingly versatile and one of the all time great carriers. Not that Pillman was bad but this was way above his normal level. Impressive action and seeing the fans being educated was most fulfilling. Watching it back now it does have the feel of a classic match, if not necessarily the quality of a great one. Top 20 for the year.
  20. Often tag team wrestling in WCW was lazy and formulatic. That was far from the case here as all 4 men were working their ass off. A decent length and they kept up a high workrate for the majority. Hell, even when they did have a rear chinlock in the ring Zbyszko was working on the apron by yapping at the fans and keeping them entertained. That's the kind of thing good managers used to do. It never got bogged down and there was a rivalry going as well. Good contest.
  21. It was your turn, my turn at offense with a ton of 2.9ers down the stretch. Decent action but not a lot of thought had gone into the construction. Finished a bit outside my top 100.
  22. It was unusual in that the rudo Salvaje was generally fighting straight up whereas the tecnico Sevilla was angry and busted his opponant. He tried numerous punches but the ref kept grabbing his arm and giving the opponant a helping hand. Not only that but the two submissions looked highly debatable. Make no doubt Sevilla was royally screwed over by the referee here. The high flying moves were excellent and so was the selling of exhaustion down the stretch. Yet what made this match so special to me wasn't as much the action in the ring but the story about corruption and injustice that it told. Mexican wrestling is often akin to a morality play with the eternal battle between good and evil. More often than not the faces are proud and honourable, whereas the heels are sneaky, dirty cheats. In this case there was a 3rd party with the heel ref, perfectly representing the corrupt authority figure. Huracan Sevilla portrayed the beaten down working man, punished time and again for the pettiest of transgressions. On the other side of the fence he knew his opponant could get away with whatever he wished as he had the official in his pocket. Sevilla fought with a great deal of anger which amplified the sense of injustice felt during and particularly after the match. The hair vs hair stipulation was vital as losing due to heel chicanery was a common thing. Here the referee took Sevilla's pride by twice calling him a quitter, and he took his dignity as his head was shaved. In the postmatch the loser presented a handful of his fallen locks to both men responsible for his dishonourable defeat.
  23. Surprisingly fun. The rowdy partisan crowd made it a wild atmosphere. It was for the "Shootfighting Championship of the World" after all. Dull on the mat but the strikes were much better. Fujiwara did a great job heeling it up and riling the fans with a couple of headbutts. The hometown fighter went over, props to Wara for carrying him.
  24. 25m isn't the way to go with super heavyweights. Bigelow was a reasonable worker but I never felt he used his weight effectively or had the presence of a big man. Vader on the other hand was strong and stiff. Decent enough match that was threatening to get good before some poor move selection from Chono led to a flat finish.
  25. The frenzied Korakuen crowd was loving it and were the best thing about it. Having finishers at the start of the match is one of my pet hates. The gaijins had 90% of the offense as they showed off all their fancy moves. Kawada then came in at the end and won Starrcade '95 style which sucked. 3 months later they'd get this match spot on but not here.
