[1993-01-02-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Doink the Clown
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Doink out for a promo with clips of his pranks on Bossman, Backlund, Tatanka. Great promo, basically like The Joker. Really original character and act by Borne. I was not at all a fan of this when I watched it at the time. Now? Seems awesome. Go figure.- 13 replies

[1993-01-09-WWF-Superstars] Update: Razor Ramon attacks Owen Hart
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
This. Maybe we're just sentimental, but this simplicity feels pretty fresh today. -
Loved the discussion about some of the AJ highlights from the year that didn't make the cut. I've seen all of the high end stuff multiple times and I believe much of what's below that at least once, but this gives me a reference for some other items to look out for, time permitting. Definitely agree with the sentiment that with Jumbo gone and Kawada still on Misawa's team these 6 mans don't feel quite as big as they usually do. But that doesn't mean they're not fun with something to offer in each. Here, you've got crisp offense from Kikuchi, great selling by Taue for Kobashi's offense, and judging by the crowd's reaction they've decided this is the year Kobashi makes the leap. He may not fit the standard American profile of one, but every time I watch him Taue reaffirms that he is just a phenomenal heel. Other guys have the advantage of promos, sneak attacks and blatant rulebreaking. He simply does little things so well that piss people off. Reminds me of Meltzer writing (I think, but forgive me if my memory is off base) how Jack Brisco got a crowd to completely turn on him by simply putting his foot on the rope to break a Dory pinfall. Loved the spot with Kobashi hitting a backdrop suplex on Akiyama, then slamming Kikuchi on him for near fall. Akiyama pins Kikuchi after a couple of Germans. I assume this made the cut as Akiyama's first win in a big match? ***1/4

Maybe I'm old fashioned and change averse, but I prefer the PWO interface to the one at DVDVR. It seems a lot louder an larger. Not quite sure I can put my finger on it but it feels like a whole lot more scrolling is required over there to view the same number of posts as is the case on PWO.

Stalling early but they quickly trade strikes to a hotter than usual Tokyo Dome crowd. Tenryu sells a lariat that completely missed, but its Tenryu vs. Choshu so we'll cut them some slack at this juncture. Choshu seemed to work on top most of the way. Tenryu ducks an attack in the corner and fires back with kicks and knees. While his strikes may not be the most impactful or have the greatest windup, his offense is just so much more stiff and deliberate than most. Love Tenryu struggling for the power bomb, which is a no go the first time, so he comes back with the superplex and his big elbow before eventually hitting it but it leaves him wiped as well. He's able to recover though and hit another power bomb for the win. A clean and decisive win on this night, yet there was enough back and forth that you know nothing has really been decided. It seems like Inoki challenges Tenryu afterwards but I don't know if that was actually the case at this time. Tenryu is really uniquely great. I enjoyed him on the 80s set but I usually didn't think he was the best wrestler in most matches, even if he was part of a few of my favorites from the decade. This Tenryu feels completely different, as he looks and carries himself as a lot older and more mature, much slower and more deliberate. Starting to finally get why his name is raised in GOAT circles. ****

This was solid but it didn't live up to what I remembered as an awesome dream match. Lots of big power moves as you'd expect with these four, particularly Scott wrecking Hawk with a tiger driver and piledriver early, but he took as much later on including the big Doomsday Device on the floor, which was awesome. I was as much a fan of the finish as the Tokyo Dome crowd. The Steiners are one act that is not holding up well at all upon rewatching 1992 and 1993. There are definitely bright spots but they just come across as bigger and stronger than many other teams and not really better. ***

[1993-01-04-NJPW-Fantastic Story in Tokyo Dome] Great Muta vs Masa Chono
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
This started out incredibly slowly, moreso than you'd think they'd need to given the length. The early highlight was definitely Chono's focused body work to set up the STF. Business eventually picked up with a bunch of spots that were really well paced as it never felt like they were just cramming things in to tick them off a list but digging down in a world title match. Odd that Muta's face paint seemed to crumble away like plaster rather than wash away like Sting's would. Solid finish with both going for the kill with their finishers, but Muta is able to prevail with two moonsaults. It wasn't great but it was pretty damn good. ***1/2- 12 replies

That really sums it up. Nothing amazing, but certainly not bad and the high spots keep it entertaining enough. But certainly sub par for both, and it bears no resemblance to anything else part of an otherwise incredibly hot and intense inter-promotional feud. **3/4

[1993-01-02-WCW-Saturday Night] Up Close w/ Arn Anderson
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Anderson talking about a leg inury from Erik Watts' STF. But he doesn't have a contract for 1993 because of Bill Watts. Seems to set up a Watts/Anderson feud, which is not a great use of Arn Anderson. On the other hand, there aren't many people I'd rather watch talk.- 13 replies

[1993-01-02-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler and Mike Miller
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Lawler out talking about competition between companies rather than wrestlers. Talks about his role on WWF TV, but says he's not leaving the USWA. He then shows highlights of a Moondog Battle Royal where Mike Samples knocked him out and cost him $10K. Mike Miller out to throw a chair at Lawler and they brawl in the studio. Not a whole lot in Memphis is really doing it for me lately and this is no different. Not bad, just not particularly compelling. -
Clips of Dundee against various opponents. Dave Brown says Bill has accepted an executive position with another wrestling company. Really great video package.

I can't say I was really stoked to watch a Steamboat & Douglas tag, but Barry Windham is awesome. Great punches, he moves so fluidly yet isn't some athletic freak and is the absolute stand out here. I wasn't digging Steamboat's antics on the apron which seemed hokey even for that type of babyface. Windham with a nice DDT to Douglas on floor and then a near fall after a rocket launcher. Dustin comes out to check on Douglas and take his place, which makes for a much better match. Dustin pins Barry after slugging him with the cast hand. Pillman & Windham have a promo after where Pillman is a bit out of control, but Windham is raging and awesome. Call me crazy but I wish they stuck with this pairing rather than moving to the Blondes. ***1/4

Heenan promo setting up someone truly perfect and in love with himself who will take out Mr. Perfect. Nice to finally start building Luger again. Refers to him as Narcissus. I know its not this simple, but how far are you going to get giving a guy a name that sounds like something you stutter? Narcissist is better, but its not good. One of those times where overthinking is a problem.

I also thought this was later in Bret's run but trusted our handy compilers. Either way, there is not a single wrong with seeing that little kid get the hitman's glasses in the hallway to start off the year with a bang.

Finally ready to start posting my thoughts on this bad boy. I'm quite a few discs in already but have letting my notes gather in a spreadsheet. Time to correct that.

Can't say they don't ever listen to fans.

Completely agree. But unless they air it live on the network, they only risk letting the live audience hear him without editing.

I was open minded to it, but I'm still waiting for one heel Bryan TV segment or match to be as good or better than any face Bryan segment or match last year. So far no action.

There are definitely good matches out there. The Cactus series (9/22/97 at MSG, Rumble, Retirement match), Austin 2/3 falls which holds up incredibly well, the HBK match at Summerslam. I know I'm in the minority at PWO but I enjoyed the Undertaker matches at Mania the first time around, though the 2nd one does not hold up that well. But hey, I enjoyed it the first time and I can't pretend that didn't happen. The Rock ladder match in '98, even the Batista hell in a cell wasn't bad. The dusty finish vs. Jericho on Raw in 2000. The HHH/Austin vs. Benoit/Jericho on Raw. You could put a comp together if you had to.

The text alert they sent also indicated a 9:30 start time.

The Jim Cornette Experience

Completely agree. Austin & especially Konnan are always a breeze to listen to, but unless he's on topic and not concerned with cracking himself up, Cornette can get pretty grating. -
