[1993-02-06-USWA-TV] Doink the Clown and Miss Texas
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Prentice really looks like Chris Christie. He's out to interrupt a Miss Texas's promo which sets up a Doink pie to her face. She attacks Prentice and he smacks her and attacks her on the ground before Lawler & Jarrett save. I'm all for an angle but the domestic violence here felt a little aggressive even for a tv show. -
Lawler wins a quick squash. Then Christopher cuts a promo on him and Doink comes out, laying banana peels for Lawler to slip on allowing Doink & Christopher to attack him before Jarrett saves. Doink was great in the role here but otherwise this didn't do much for me.

[1993-02-06-WWF-Superstars] Yokozuna vs Jim Duggan
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Duggan did such a great job getting the crowd involved for this angle. They do the charging tackles spot and Duggan knocks Yoko down as the crowd goes bananas. Yoko follows up by throwing salt in his eyes & destroying him. Really effective angle with the flag, blood and as noted above, Vince on commentary put things over the top. Really couldn't ask for more to build up Yoko given the time constraints, roster and his place on the card at Mania.- 19 replies

[1993-02-06-WWF-Superstars] Update: recap of Giant Gonzalez's debut
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Clips of Giant Gonzales debuting at Rumble to attack Undertaker. Gonzales & Whippeman with a quick, boring promo. He was huge. -
Before the match even starts this feud has more heat than anything else in the world. Hashimoto lays out Tenryu with some stiff kicks early allowing the supporting players to do their thing. Tenryu & Hara hit a sweet front/back lariat combo on Muto. After Muto lays out Tenryu with a facebuster the New Japan team drops a million elbows on him while crowd goes wild in a fantastic spot as the ref holds back the WAR team. I don't rate this quite as highly as the November 6 man which to this point is probably my favorite match in this feud. But this match is very good and does so many little things to further the feud -- the pre-match tension with Tenryu & Hash establishing that as a marquee singles battle to look forward to, then Tenryu playing his outsider heel role perfectly by staring down Hash & Muto while chopping Nogami raw. Even the finishing stretch furthers the story with Muto breaking up a Tenryu pinfall, prompting a response where he spitefully power bombs Nogami and covers him with a boot. I doubt there are a ton of scenarios that find an entire building chanting for Akira Nogami, but this feud pulls that off. The finish felt a bit too sudden for my taste, but it was a clean and convincing win that along with the post-match brawl keeps things going. These matches don't measure up to the high-end All Japan stuff from this year. But the heat is off the charts and its far and away the best feud going. Just amazing to think what the big 2 over there were delivering side by side at this time. ****

[1993-02-01-WWF-Raw] Andre the Giant 10-bell salute
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Fink announces Andre's passing and they ring the bell 10 times while we're treated to a bunch of still photos from Andre's career. I could watch video packages like these for hours.- 10 replies

Your favorite surprises/swerves/heel turns.
WingedEagle replied to Carnival's topic in Pro Wrestling
Between the evoluation of booking and widespread news & rumors online, I'm not sure we get such huge surprises anymore. There's only so much that is kept under wraps long enough that by the time it happens it feels like a genuine surprise. Rock returning on Raw in '11 fits that bill. Personally, I now look forward to and similarly mark out when a storyline is teased and drawn out over time and then actually pays off the way you want to see it happen. Offhand I'm thinking of things like Batista turning face heading into Mania 21, Bryan winning at Summerslam last year, or Punk taking the title at MITB. If you giveme a reason to care and create some doubt as to whether I'll get that payoff, and then deliver it? I will be one happy paying customer. Perhaps this is because of how rushed most angles and feuds are now, as well as no longer expecting an awesome, blowaway payoff that when it does happen it means that much more. -
Is TNA the worst wrestling promotion in history?
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
Wouldn't make sense that it was on the prior week's show as it was published in the one I received in the mail today which went up on the site presumably a few days ago. -
That's weird. I downloaded VLC on a mac ages ago and had no problems right away. This happening to you on all files or one in particular?

Is TNA the worst wrestling promotion in history?

Dave was "forced" to write that as Court Bauer said it. Apparently Dave told Court that in private. Can you explain further? Perhaps I missed the Bauer pod where he went into detail on it. -
So I'm up to this point in the yearbook and just watched the 6/3 tag match. Unreal. I watched the AJPW 80s set and much of the 90s, and never saw Hansen get thrashed so soundly. You had the crowd chanting for JOEL DEATON of all people to make the save just a few minutes into the match. Pretty clear from this they had big plans for Gordy heading into the fall. I can only imagine how well his airplane escapades went over. Most importantly for now -- I can't seem to find the Gordy vs. Hansen singles anywhere. Checked Ditch & the tubes and came up empty. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

From this week's WON: Jeff Jarrett & Toby Keith were close to finalizing their purchae of the company, but it fell apart when Bob Carter insisted that as part of the deal they had to retain Dixie with some input into the new company and as a TV character. I respect putting family first, but wow. Why not just find another way to use family money to take care of her? -
I loved Nak/Saku and thought the April Tana/Okada match was great, but personally preferred their G1 draw and October matches. I think Okada is supposed to be the heel when matched with Tanahashi, but he doesn't cheat or do much of anything to go out of his way and heel things up. He also clearly plays the face against Karl Anderson who's a pretty rigid heel at this point. Maybe he's more along the lines of an old school NWA who's not a straight face or heel? Perhaps someone who speaks the language could help give us a sense of how he's presented in the commentary and promos.
-
Will, what do you think of Shibata? I loved most of the top NJ matches from last year but thought his were really overrated.
-
But is there anything you wouldn't enjoy given that kind of support?
-
Sadly, no. It's going to be a bit labor intensive, but I'm editing thread titles. Check the January 1990 folder to see what I've done so far. I've applied hashtags and edited titles there, so you can see where we are going. The good news is that you'll be able to sort those threads in all folders when I'm done by: - Wrestler - Day of the Year - Feud - Promotion - Title on the line - Title Change - City in which it occurred - My star rating (Plan to layer in others eventually, including WON ratings) This sounds awesome and will absolutely make this place that much more of a resource than it already is. Definitely going to be a painstaking process. Thanks for putting in the time!
-
One other note -- it looks like the new yearbook threads don't display the subtopic which listed the date/promotion/show of the topic. Any way to get that back?
-
Hopefully a dumb question that I find the answer to shortly, but does the new site have the same button next to each thread you can click to begin viewing from any unread posts in that thread?

Vince McMahon's deal to buy the WWWF from his dad and others
WingedEagle replied to Smack2k's topic in Pro Wrestling
Absent a good reason to doubt Meltzer's sources, why question his reporting. Can argue on taste but I don't recall any reasons to challenge his integrity. -
My larger point was that a key argument in the Bryan push discussion has been pointing to how over he is with the crowds. If crowds become unfocused and out of control to the point that they're chanting for just about anything, you can pretty easily construct an argument that Bryan isn't as over as some would have you believe but rather one of many excuses for people to make noise.
-
I hope it doesn't continue. One could easily point to that and say the crowds just want to make noise and be disruptive as opposed to Bryan actually being over as a top guy.
-
Perhaps not hardcore by PWO standards. But there is nothing casual about a fan who regularly goes to wrestling news sites.
-
Plenty of people watch the NFL every Sunday, or their local NBA/MLB team and maybe a national game every now and then. But they're not checking espn.com, rotoworld or any other sites that otherwise track micro happenings in those sports. They take their cues from what they watch. Can't imagine wrestling fans skew all that differently.
