  1. Quite the contrast from Takayama-Kanehara, with this almost entirely mat-based. For the first time all year I get a sense of the little things that made Takada such a big deal -- his facials, quick strikes and ability to move around and carry himself like a star who earned his charisma and position rather than just letting the match come to him. He absolutely controlled how you appreciated this. Takada strong with the little things -- facials, movements that put him over as a big deal and star. Sano more than holds his own with a lot of nifty counters that seem to get him over as a credible underdog much like Koshinaka vs. Tenryu. ***3/4
  2. Just look at young Takayama. Its strange to see him work submissions on the ground. Kanehara with a great northern lights suplex into a rear naked choke. Shoe said it best -- this really felt like a sprint version of a UWFI match with lots of bombs, suplexes and submission attempts. Takayamda gets in a huge German and a series of knees before tapping to a rear naked choke. I thought this was pretty damn good and on the higher end of shoot style matches for the year. I also recall Takayama having a rep as a poor worker until post-Frye. Was that considered the case here as well or only when he first moved to traditional puro? ***3/4
  3. Simmons with a weird captain's hat on. Simmons just isn't strong on the mic here. Trying to build for a title match with Rude at Starrcade, but this isn't hiding your champ's weakness or emphasizing his strengths.
  4. Cornette tries to rip a phone book before the match, but only ends up ripping a few pages out of it. This leads us into a 3 vs. 2 matches at Christmas Chaos. Then we get a a RNR promo, Cornette draws them into the ring where the Bodies come out and attack them with a Coke can and the racket. Good promo from Cornette & Bodies afterwards, but RNR are back to counter them. Finally we get to the match. Seamless editing by the yearbook producers on this one as one week's show ends and presumably the next begins without any real jump. Morton quickly goes into FIP mode, which is always a good thing. RNR get the pin when Studd Stable come out and their distraction of the Bodies backfires. Okay now I know its just me as Cornette at this point is batting a lot closer to .500 than a 1.000, and while this was fine, I really prefer it when the RNR and Studds are involved rather than just a Corny promo. That aside, I like where the storylines are headed here and with Smothers coming into the territory.
  5. Studd Stable is frustrated they haven't gotten a title match. I like these guys.
  6. Clips of Smothers in and out of the ring, on a boat, etc. Good job painting him as a babyface. Today this same thing would make for a great heel. We get photos of him as a kid, talking about his youth athletics. Solid start.
  7. Lawler out saying he'll team with the Moondogs to face the Harris Brothers & Mike Miller, who are working for Mike Samples. I'd be up for Lawler teaming with the Moondogs as a twist here, but these heels are a bore.
  8. Bushwhackers out in Santa costumes and singing a dumb Christmas song. Happy holidays!
  9. Sousserov forces an early rope break with cross armbreaker, while Nagai's strategy is working leglocks on the ground . Nagai lands a big high kick for a pop but Sousserov follows with a quick takedown. Nagai sold damage to his leg while trapped very well. Nagai finally hits a couple close range knees and slaps to set up a big high kick for the win. Typically enjoyable shoot style but not stand out. ***
  10. Finlay looks straight out of an epic movie. It was weird that in this and the Liger match, the PA announcer seems to be providing play by play at times. Is that common here? Finlay looked great but the match felt long and disjointed. **3/4
  11. This wasn't bad, but different from just about anything else going on at the time. Liger predictable looked good, working in some nice arm drags and mat work before breaking out some spots in subsequent rounds, but it was kind of tough to get into this. **3/4
  12. I think I've mentioned before that they had another bloodbath on 9/23/93. Wasn't on TV, but don't know if it was filmed for commercial tape as it was part that big series they ran that week. Just remember seeing pictures in one of the mags about it, and it looked like another total bloodbath. John Was this really considered a face turn for Muta? Had never heard that before. I don't know where in my head I got the idea that Hase was boring, but this is yet another match on the yearbook where he's great, charismatic and often pretty heelish. Nothing remotely blase or boring a bout him. Didn't think this was so great, but Hase's performance going after the cut and all the blood definitely make it good and memorable. Muta on the other hand was stalling much of the way until bleeding. Would've loved to see Hase win here but given the Tokyo Dome title match that wasn't happening. *** 1/2
  13. Kosh attacks during the intros to gain an early advantage, consistent with the heat in this feud. Even Tenryu's missed chops feel big here. Kosh works over Tenryu's arm and then sends him over the top. They did a fantastic job establishing that Koshinaka could pull off the upset early on, and the heat never dissipated. I enjoyed the focus on Tenryu's arm as it was both punishing and portrayed as a real means to a win for Kosh. Judging from the stains on the mat I'm guessing this followed Muta/Hase. Tenryu takes over with an eyerake to break the submission and then goes to wok with kicks and foot scrapes, which Kosh sells really well and is taken up a notch when his forehead is busted open, which he sells the rest of the way when mounting his comebacks. After a Kosh German, Tenryu fires back with lariats, an enzuigiri and power bomb that sees Kosh get a foot on the rope to break the pin. Enzuigiri and power bomb but Kosh has foot on rope. Kosh has one last superman effort rolling through a splash for a huge near fall, but Tenryu kicks out and blocks a dragon suplex before hitting another enzuigiri, lariat and power bomb to win. Tenryu is just such a phenomenal heel in this feud. I liked him when watching AJ in the 80s, but he's at a completely different level in WAR vs. NJ. At this point it feels like the hottest feud in the world even though it just got rolling late in the year, and I don't know how anything can touch it in '93. ****
  14. Wow was this incredible. I think its my #2 joshi match of the year, falling just behind Dream Rush primarily b/c Dream Rush had Oz (and Kansai) who made that so special and unique, though obviously that's not slighting this at all. After Kyoko accidentally takes out Kong, Toyota moonsaults her to the floor within the first minute. When things settle its time for Yamada to get destroyed, and she is absolutely picked apart with a very focused offense on her back. Kong is even in with the stiff kicks while Kyoko has her in a camel clutch and then proceeds to tell Yamada & Toyota she means business. Then comes the predictable hot tag for Toyota to go on a big run. Except Kong & Kyoko avoid her dropkicks, cut her off and go to work on her back! That was an absolutely awesome twist and one of my favorite moments in a big match on this set. Yamada returns in a nice bit of symmetry with the same kicks on Kong that she ate earlier in the match. Kong isn't down for long, as she beats Yamada all around ringside. In the only real flaw you can find if you're looking for one, Yamada seemed to come back from this a on Kyoko a bit quickly and punishes her with 5 backdrop suplexes. There weren't many near falls to this point which made the ones down the stretch even bigger. Yamada attempts the Gori Especial on Kyoko but Kong clocks her with the garbage pail and the pace picks up from here on out. This was built so well. Kong misses a uraken and eats a backdrop suplex, but catches Toyota coming off the top into a powerslam. A choke slam to Toyota only gets 2. Toyota with a near fall on Kyoko but eats a power bomb for one before kicking out. Toyota's moonsault feels like the finish but only gets 2 before Kong breaks it up in a great save. Yamada saves Toyota on a jumping powerbomb. Then Kyoko gets one of the year's big wins, hitting her jumping elbow onto Toyota off of Kong's shoulders. The crowd is chating for Kyoko afterwards into the post-match with the trophy presentation. Other teams come to the ring as well, where Kyoko apparently is cracking everyone up on the mic. The other girls also seem to enjoy her schtick. Wish I knew what she was saying. Gets everyone in on a zenjo chant before we fade. I absolutely loved this. ****1/2
  15. Great point here about the RR match. I'm not sure any other out of this world match has fallen quite as much in my eyes. Part of it is Benoit, part of it is the over the top video game mashing style becoming so intolerable, but my thoughts on this now bear zero resemblance to what they were at that time.
  16. I've actually been in the same AL auction/keeper league with 8 guys for 18 years now. Started in high school and still going strong, even if baseball bores the hell out of me. Draft day is the best.
  17. I'm sorry, I don't get it. Maybe it's running on too little sleep lately. :/ Looks like he's following the PWO twitter account.
  18. Sounds like someone needs to reevaluate his priorities Split it into smaller episodes, we won't complain!
  19. Will/Charles, anything in the pipeline here?
  20. You'd think, although from what I understood MLB.TV operated on 2 fronts -- providing MLB.TV that people consume and then providing service / consultation on the delivery of online streaming services, which is essentially a flat, fee-based business.
  21. Yeah I'm guessing its wishful thinking to assume he'll honor those bets? I guess we'll find out.
  22. Brick has always amused me so I'd be disappointed to see him go, especially when I know how easy it is to misread things in email / online. That being said, much like when the court defined pornography, I think you know when things have crossed a line when you see it. When the discussion is no longer about wrestling and has devolved to personal attacks, its time to end things. And on that note, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here -- hope you and yours have a great holiday with some wrestling to follow tonight or tomorrow. Time for this guy to go see his loved ones and eat for the rest of the day. Enjoy!
  23. I have to think there's enough that's good, important or at a minimum reflective of the period and where the product both was at the time and was going that you'd want it recorded for posterity. I think the format is phenomenal and while it can be tweaked to reflect the quality of of what's available, from a historical perspective people will want to look back on what was big or dominating at the time. Just my 2 cents.
  24. Dustin not there for a match with Windham, who calls him out. Steamboat is out to confront Windham and they both take up chairs. Then Dustin is in from behind and starts brawling with Windham while Steamboat & Douglas out watching. Hot, brief action while Rhodes was there. Should've built to a series of PPV matches.
  25. A fly is crawling on Rude's jacket. Talks about being #1 contender as US Champion for a year and finally getting his shot at the title. Breaks out an x-ray of a damaged shoulder that Simmons has been hiding. Good in theory but Simmons has been booked so poorly as champion, and really hasn't been built that strongly through angles so its tough to get too excited by it at this point. Says he'll give Vader a shot at the title when he wins it. That would've been interesting.
