[1992-07-11-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Tom Prichard
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
Promo setting up another match with Christopher, though I could've sworn he lost a loser leaves town match? Definitely a good fit on the mic in the territories. -
Highlights from match at MSC vs. Moondogs. Everybody bleeds again and there are tons of weapons. Looks awesome. After a spike piledriver on Cujo, Richard Lee throws power at Jarrett so Lee keeps his hair. Lawler delivers a promo bringing Fargo back as their partner in a 6 man tag.

[1992-07-11-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert vs Ricky Morton
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
We start with clips of the MSC match, with near falls before Gilbert uses a chain and interference for the pin. Would've been nice to have this in full, but can say that about most every big match at the Coliseum. We then go to a studio match, where the psychology seemed a bit off with Morton working on top much of the way. Gilbert asks for 5 more minutes after the time limit and Morton proceeds to quickly wrap him in a small package, though Gilbert keeps title b/c of a contract technicality. They handled that pretty well. Eddie Marlin gives Morton a return match and lets him pick the stip -- Morton picks his dad Paul Morton as ref, and Gilbert flips out. Fun stuff. **1/4 -
[1992-07-09-JWP-Thank You] Mayumi Ozaki vs Dynamite Kansai
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
I liked this a lot, especially as a contrast to some of the gogo AJW matches. Lots of stiffness here -- elbows, kicks, with Kansai playing the role of monster pretty damn well. She's a pretty mobile monster though, wiping herself out on a tope. Oz back to working the arm with Kansai doing a *fantastic* job selling. She counters it with a neat toss to finally break the hold, which didn't feel at all like a slow rest spot. DK catches Oz in a dive and hits a piledriver on floor to surprisingly little reaction. Lots of good countering which is presumably part of a backstory I'm not familiar with. Kansai goes for splash mountain, and Oz counters into roll up for what feels like a pretty big upset. ***3/4- 12 replies

[1992-07-04-WCW-Saturday Night] Steve Austin and Barry Windham
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
Austin interview, Windham challenges him and faces are out to counter Heyman. No ref which is odd, and they of course hype a rematch at the Omni the next night. Because that's what a national audience cares about. Strong smack by Windham for crowd pop. They go for falls even with no ref. Eventually Rhodes counts a fall for Windham.- 9 replies

Landell with an energetic promo against Horner, who chases him out of the ring with a belt. Landell regroups under a basketball rim. Underwhelming because of Horner.

[1992-07-04-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert and Ricky Morton
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
Gilbert out talking about his matches since returning and all the fans he's sick of. He then hypes Ricky Morton as his new opponent and how he's similar to Gilbert, which is why he respects him. Morton out supporting the fans, and Gilbert tells him he forgot his roots and they have a hot, quick exchange in the ring before Gilbert runs. Both were pretty good on the mic here. -
[1992-07-04-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
Lawler & Jarrett follow with a promo hyping the hair stipulation as a huge deal and Lee's most embarrassing moment. -
[1992-07-04-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett vs The Moondogs
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
Dogs out with chair and golf club to start. One of the dogs bite Lawler and he's bleeding. We've got Billy Joe Travis passing Lawler & Jarrett weapons. This was fun while it lasted but way too quick. Afterwards Lee demands Eddie Marlin get him a rematch and his money back. Lawler says they'll put titles on the line at MSC next week against Lee's hair. **3/4- 11 replies

Clips of Lawler/Jarrett winning tag titles with Fargo as ref. Dogs attack Fargo afterwards (being pretty careful with him) which leads to more brawling. Lawler says Lee will put up $5K for tv rematch. This was good, but its a shame how quickly this lost steam over the year without much of a big payoff.

[1992-07-04-WWF-Superstars] Update: Nailz/Big Bossman recap
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
Clips of Nailz attacking Bossman, who talks to Okerlund by phone. BBM mentions he said on the WWF Network he'd be back sooner than Nailz thinks. This angle was great but Kevin Kelly wasn't the guy to give you much of a payoff in the ring. -
[1992-07-04-UWA] Doug Furnas & Dan Kroffat vs Silver King & El Texano
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in July 1992
This was pretty disappointing, and the Can-Ams felt out of place in this style. I liked the masks though. **1/2 -
Nothing special, though the crowd was hot. The faces seem to be working through a safe routine where each has a very specific, and limited, role to play. The first fall felt like a super team squash. Caras is an awesome heel and each time I see him here has me looking forward to his headline feuds in '93. Loved Caras continually picking up the faces after 2 counts later in the match to continue beating on them. This would've been better with 10+ minutes chopped off. ***

Great matwork in the first fall that looks old school yet feels entirely refreshing, and almost all takes place in the middle of the ring without any use of the ropes. After Dandy works for a camel clutch they roll to the floor to exchange a few slaps and then its right back to the ring and the mat. Just seamless, natural transitions that are a real pleasure to watch while so basic at the same time. Some specific things I loved: - Dandy's submission that's essentially a forced split. - The heat for Casas' low blow in the 2nd fall, no doubt amplified by the fact that it stood out in stark contrast to how clean the rest of the match is. - Dandy's pinning combo in the 2nd fall. - The series of big moves and near falls in the final fall which were built to so well by the matwork and pacing early on. One other note -- Will's listings state that the VQ on this match is poor. While its not exactly HD, it was never a distracting or difficult watch and is yet another reminder that the standards on these sets are higher than just about anything else out there. ****1/2

If the Dump/Chigusa hair match isn't Austin/Hart from the 80s I don't know what is. Just brutal, emotional and an outright fantastic spectacle. I'd heard about all of the crying in the audience during the post-match but it was something else to actually see it.

Who took the best backdrop?
WingedEagle replied to Cross Face Chicken Wing's topic in The Microscope
Nope. In which case the winner was All Japan. -
Is it possible to have a heel company ace?
WingedEagle replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
This is really the crux of it. Most top babyfaces before Cena would've been heels in prior decades. Just part of a cultural change. -
This, and most of WCW's in-ring product at this time, was a cut above what was being offered in WWF outside of Flair/Savage. Watching the year unfold (I'm through August), what's standing out to me is the night and day difference in production and professionalism between the two companies. WWF is so far ahead of WCW in lighting, TV sets, interview / promo segments. Its such a disparity that for the casual fan I can easily see why one simply looks like a minor league outfit.
